SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Professional lacrosse player Jules Heningburg joined the San Diego Seals and played with the team until the season was cut short due to coronavirus. The athlete said his aunt works for the CDC, so he’s taken the virus seriously since the beginning.“I was following the rules there, I was wearing a mask, socially distancing, washing my hands, I really didn’t see anyone other than my roommate,” said Heningburg.He said even when some businesses moved further into reopening in San Diego, he continued his carefulness.“I had to just make sure I was going to keep myself safe, so I continued to follow quarantine on my own protocol, not going out. I didn’t go to bars, I didn’t do anything like that, I didn’t go to any restaurants,” he said.Then, as rules continued to relax, he went to one single birthday party, then found out later that someone at the party had tested positive. A few days later and he knew something was wrong with him.“I was having a conversation and all of a sudden I got really tired, like mid talk at 6:30 at night,” he said.He tested positive and said at first his symptoms were not terrible. Once he was not contagious, he traveled to Utah to play in a lacrosse league, and since he had previously tested positive, he had to do extra doctors visits. That’s when he realized the impacts on his health were worse that he thought. His oxygen levels quickly fell during tests.“As a professional athlete and someone who is in really good shape, when you start moving around that level should not drop. When I started to walk around those levels started to drop,” he said.He said with levels dropping this rapidly, he had an increased risk of cardiac arrest. He then realized how close he came to losing his life, thankful he had done the extra tests that showed he had a problem.“I followed all the rules and I was still put in a situation and exposed to it and could have died,” he said.This meant exercising and playing were not an option, so ultimately Heningburg has to sit out from the Utah league. He came back to San Diego to rest and heal, then will figure out when it’s safe for him to play again.He said he wants to send a message to San Diego that the virus is dangerous and he, a young and athletic man who almost lost his life, is proof. 2306

San Diego's affordable housing crisis has been getting more dire over the last five years because there's a lack of resources, a new report from the California Housing Partnership says. The report, released Wednesday, says the county needs 143,800 more affordable rental homes to meet current demand. However, there's less money and resources going to them. The average rent in the county is now up to ,992, and about the city's lowest income renters are spending 70 percent of their money on housing. Stephen Russell, who heads the San Diego Housing Federation, said the region took a hit in 2012, when the state eliminated redevelopment funds - 20 percent of which were reserved for affordable housing. Now, as cost of living rises, there are nearly 10,000 homeless San Diegans, thousands of them sleeping on the streets.Bruce Carron, 72, was one of them, until he got into Talmadge Gateway, a new 60-unit complex for low-income seniors with ongoing medical needs."It's just more than what I thought I deserved, but somewhere along the line God wanted me to win somewhere in this crazy life that we have," Carron said. The city will soon decide whether to place a property tax bond on the November ballot to pay for more affordable housing. It would charge for every 0,000 of assessed value, and pay for 7,500 new homes. "Until we solve the problem of people sleeping on our streets, I don't think I can sleep in my bed with a good conscience," Russell said.The San Diego Taxpayers Association doesn't have a position on the potential measure, but in a statement chief execrative Haney Hong said more research was needed."Before we decide to throw more money at the problem, let's understand what we're getting right now and how our public agencies are performing," he said. The city rules committee will consider the bond for the ballot next month.  1924

(KGTV) -- Neighbors in Del Cerro say an intersection near their homes is a hot spot for accidents and speeding, with the latest incident occurring Monday night.The streets and intersection in question are Madra Avenue and Del Cerro Boulevard. Denisse Newell took cell phone video during the aftermath of Monday’s accident. Newell says she’s reached out to City of San Diego officials to ask that something be done to make drivers slow down.Another neighbor, Emily Broadwater, says she was involved in an accident at the intersection in 2018 after a man didn’t stop at the stop sign. Her minivan was totaled.Newell says her dog was also hit by a speeding car and survived the accident. Her husband has stopped walking their children to school after multiple close calls. Neighbors worry that the next time it’ll be a person. The women say they’d like the city to implement like speed bumps, a stoplight or roundabouts to get drivers to slow down.ABC 10News reached out to San Diego City Councilman Scott Sherman’s office, who represents the district. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) Thousands of homes braced for rotating outages Monday, but the outages were ultimately averted.The California Independent System Operator, which manages high voltage power transmission, had warned San Diego Gas and Electric and other utilities that it was very likely they would be ordered to implement rotating outages Monday.However, the outages were never ordered partly because local residents and businesses heeded the call to cut back on energy usage.SDG&E, which takes its cues from CAISO for rotating outages, says the rolling blackouts are still possible throughout the state if CAISO isn’t able to maintain a balance between energy demand and supply during the heatwave.A Flex Alert is currently in place through Wednesday. SAN DiEGO (KGTV) - Police deployed tasers to arrest a man following a road rage outburst that got out of control Wednesday evening.Police identified the man as 33-year-old Jason Berard. He was driving a silver SUV that backed into a white pickup truck near Park Boulevard and Howard Avenue in the University Heights neighborhood.  According to the driver of the pickup, they pulled over into a Chevron. The driver of the pickup truck thought they were going to exchange insurance information, but instead, Berard was confrontational.  According to witnesses, Berard punched the other driver before ripping away the man’s cell phone and throwing it on the ground, smashing it.A gas station employee called the police.  After police responded and made contact, police say Berard assaulted an officer. That’s when another officer came to help and fell to the ground during the struggle.Police say Berard took off on foot and got about a block down Howard Avenue but was taken down after an officer using their taser.Berard could be facing battery charges on an officer as well as resisting arrest. 1122
