SAN DIEGO — Democratic Congressman Mike Levin has opened a commanding 20-point lead over Republican challenger Brian Maryott in coastal North County's 49th district, according to a new scientific poll.The ABC-10News Union-Tribune poll shows Levin leading Maryott 56 percent to 36 percent, with the remainder undecided. It's an increase over the 49 percent to 37 percent lead Levin had over Maryott in a prior poll taken in mid-September. "We've seen a lot of the communities that have shifted to more in the democratic party since 2016 are these more suburban, well-educated communities like many of the communities in California's 49th," said Stephen Goggin, a lecturer in the political science department at San Diego State University. The poll of 514 likely voters shows Levin getting the support of 68 percent of independents, with Maryott, a San Juan Capistrano councilman, getting just 15 percent of them. Both are getting the bulk of their backing from their own parties. In an interview Tuesday, Levin said he was not taking anything for granted, and that the only poll that matters is the one on election day. "This is the home stretch of an election, all hands on deck, leave no stone unturned. That's the only way I know and that's what we're going to do over the next three weeks," Levin said. SALEM, Ore. – Authorities responding to a hostage situation in Oregon found three people dead from gunshot wounds in an Oregon home Monday.The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release that its deputies responded to the hostage situation at a home in Salem at about 12:30 p.m. local time.At the home, Oregon State Police says deputies were able to establish communications with the suspect, 34-year-old Jose Jesus Lopez-Tinoco, in an attempt to resolve the situation peacefully.But upon hearing gunshots inside the home, officers forced their way inside in a rescue attempt. During the rescue, police say one deputy fired an undetermined number of shots.Inside the home, police say deputies located the body of Lopez-Tinoco with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The officers also found a deceased 24-year-old, Diari Rocio -Bustos, and the body of an 11-year-old boy. Both suffered fatal gunshot wounds.A 13-year-old boy and a 43-year-old woman were also found alive in the home. The boy was unharmed, but the woman was seriously injured and was transported to a hospital.No law enforcement officers were injured and there’s no reason to believe there is any outstanding danger to the Salem community, officials say.The 2-year deputy who fired shots during the incident, Ricky Kittelson, has been placed on administrative leave, as is protocol.The investigation into the incident is being turned over to the Oregon State Police, concurrent with state policy regarding officer-involved shootings. 1534

Issa scheduled a news conference for Thursday and will announce he's seeking the seat held by fellow Republican and longtime-U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, who is running for re-election while under indictment on corruption charges, said Larry Wilske, a retired Navy SEAL and Republican also running in Hunter's San Diego-area district.In an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, Wilske said Issa told him he will run. Troy Amundson, 50, is the latest naval official to be sentenced for corrupt acts committed at the behest of Malaysian national Leonard Glenn "Fat Leonard" Francis and his Singapore-based company, Glenn Defense Marine Asia.Earlier this year, Amundson pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit bribery, admitting that he schemed with Francis and others to receive gifts, including entertainment expenses and the services of prostitutes, in exchange for taking official actions for the benefit of GDMA.Francis, for his part, pleaded guilty in 2015 to bribery and fraud charges and conceded that he had presided over a massive decade-long conspiracy involving scores of U.S. Navy officials, tens of millions of dollars in fraud and a glut of bribes and gifts -- from cash, prostitutes and luxury travel to Cuban cigars, Kobe beef and Spanish suckling pigs.From 2005 to 2013, Amundson coordinated the Navy's joint military exercises with its foreign maritime counterparts. As part of those duties, he was responsible for building and maintaining cooperative relationships with the Navy's foreign naval-exercise partners.The defendant, a resident of Ramsey, Minnesota, admitted that Francis paid for dinner, drinks, transportation, various entertainment expenses and prostitutes for him and other U.S. Navy officers from September 2012 through October 2013.On one occasion, according to prosecutors, Amundson wrote to Francis from a private email account, proffering internal proprietary Navy information: "I am a small dog just trying to get a bone ... however I am very happy with my small program.
