SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Chicano Federation of San Diego County distributed hundreds of COVID-19 prevention kits in Barrio Logan to help prevent the spread of the disease in one of the county's hardest hit communities.The Chicano Federation partnered up with several local business to help provide over 500 kits to residents. Kits include children and adult face masks, disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, and thermometers.According to our ABC 10News heat map, Barrio Logan's zip codes have reported some of the highest number of coronavirus cases in San Diego County. Data from local health officials shows Latinos and Hispanics make up over 60 percent of the number of positive cases in San Diego County."We think it's important to send the message that it's really important to stay alert, stay aware, to still follow the county and state messaging around COVID-19 including wearing masks and physical distancing," said Nancy Maldonado, President and CEO of The Chicano Federation of San Diego County. 1012

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Sunday is expected to be the busiest travel day of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, but it will still be light in comparison to holiday travel before the pandemic. Four million Southern Californians were expected to travel over Thanksgiving, despite warnings against travel because of the pandemic. The CDC advised people not to travel, asking them to stay home, to avoid further spread of COVID-19. Doctors worry about the effects of this weekend's travel will be seen in a few weeks from now, with a surge of cases. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Termed-out San Diego City Councilman Scott Sherman is taking aim at what he says is too much outside influence behind the scenes at City Hall.In an interview with ABC 10News, Sherman said too many of his colleagues vote based on their own political preservation."Unfortunately, too many politicians are looking down the road and at what office they are going to run for next," Sherman said. In a recent op-ed, Sherman said in politics he has learned that handshakes and signed memos are worth a "bucket of spit." He said political gadflies, union reps, party reps and political donors are wielding too much power of council members. Sherman believes this is the reason the city still has not come to an agreement on regulating short-term rentals, and is approving labor-friendly development projects."One of the things that bothered me the most in politics is how different special interest groups can literally come down, sit in the front row, and dictate to council members what they will and won't do if they want their support in the future, and unfortunately most of them do," Sherman said. Sherman said he is the exception because he did not base his council career on a run for higher office. He did run for mayor in 2020, losing in the primary. But he said chose to run because of encouragement, and because no other Republican entered the race. Michael Zucchet, who heads the city's Municipal Employees Association, said Sherman and other politicians generally define "special interests" as those that disagree with them. "I wasn't very moved by his comments and they struck me as sour grapes," Zucchet said in an email. "It seems like pure hypocrisy to me. Not to mention baseless, transparent whining."Sherman, who represented the Mission Valley area, is now going back into insurance sales. His departure will leave Chris Cate as the only Republican on the City Council because Sherman's seat flipped to Democrat in the November election. 1978

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man police say hit and killed a pedestrian on a South Bay road in late July has been arrested.According to police, Carlos Franco, 20, turned himself in to investigators Tuesday and was booked into jail for vehicular manslaughter.San Diego Police on July 30 received a report of a crash on Del Sol Boulevard and Dennery Road at 7:03 a.m.RELATED: Pedestrian hit, killed on south San Diego street  Police say Franco struck a 66-year-old man, who was crossing the street at the time of the crash. The man, who hasn’t been identified by police, was pronounced dead at the scene.Following the crash, Franco stayed on scene. Police say drugs or alcohol weren’t factors in the crash. 712

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego declared Thursday, August 6, as "Officer Jonathan Wiese Day."Wiese was the San Diego police officer who saved two-year-old twin girls after their father drove off Sunset Cliffs in June. The officer also saved the girls' father from the water.On Thursday, a proclamation was read and presented during a virtual Rancho Bernardo Community Council meeting.Wiese said he didn't rescue the girls for recognition, but said it was nice to see community support.The rescue happened early in the morning on June 13. Wiese, a K-9 officer, rappelled off a cliff using his 100-foot long dog leash to help.Wiese told 10News he is actually scared of heights and was thankful that it was dark the morning of the rescue.He joked that his wife told him he wouldn't have to wash the dishes on his day and that he hoped he'd get a free cup of coffee.Wiese was also the officer that helped take the suspected Poway Synagogue shooter into custody in April 2019. 989
