EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Three lanes of Interstate 8 closed Friday night after at least one person was killed in a fiery crash near State Route 67. Around 5:30 p.m. a man driving in the fast lane of I-8 lost control and swerved into the center divider before reaching the slow lane and hitting 1997 Wabash 53-foot trailer being towed by a 2013 Kenworth T660, according to California Highway Patrol. Witnesses reported that the Ford was cut off by an unidentified vehicle which merged from the eastbound #2 lane into the #1 (fast lane) lane directly into the Ford’s path of travel. The driver of the Ford made a turning movement to the left and impacted the concrete center divide wall. As a result, the Ford veered back across the eastbound traffic lanes and broadsided the trailer.As the crash happened, the Ford became lodged under the trailer and was dragged for several hundred feet. Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus response coordinator, said on Wednesday that several states should consider moving back to Phase 1 in reopening due to increased coronavirus activity.Dr. Birx pointed to Arizona, Texas, California and Florida as states that are seeing a high prevalence of the coronavirus. EL CAJON (KGTV) -- A motorcyclist who crashed into a parked truck on a residential street in Fletcher Hills has died, El Cajon police said Tuesday.Shortly after the crash, some off-duty nurses rushed to help the critically injured motorcyclist, identified Wednesday as 36-year-old Julian Garcia, allowing emergency crews to rush him to the hospital.Jennifer Lepari said she heard a “loud boom” on Valley Lake Drive near Valley Mill Road around 8:30 p.m. Monday. “It almost shook the house. It was really, really loud,” she said.Lepari and her husband Jerome are both nurses. Jerome quickly used his belt as a tourniquet on the rider’s leg to staunch the bleeding while Jennifer applied pressure and spoke with dispatchers, according to neighbors.“With the amount of blood he lost and the time it took [for emergency crews to arrive], even the cops said [the rider] wouldn’t have lasted if [Jerome] hadn’t done that,” Lepari said.El Cajon police say the motorcyclist struck a parked work truck on Valley Mill Road for unknown reasons. Investigators believe speed may have been a factor but the crash is still under investigation, Lt. Randy Soulard said.A third off-duty nurse who lives around the block also tended to the badly injured rider, neighbors said.“It was awesome to see the people with that sort of medical experience jump in and not hesitate,” said a neighbor named Lisa.Once police arrived, an officer applied a second tourniquet to the rider’s leg, Lt. (KGTV) -- A driver escaped serious injury after jumping from his truck after the brakes went out and just before the vehicle crashed into a Petco store in El Cajon.At around 10 p.m. Thursday, a man was driving his pickup truck near the 500 block of N 2nd Street when he noticed his brakes would not work.He managed to pull into a strip mall parking lot, opened his door, and then bailed from the truck.The truck continued to move and eventually slammed into the front doors of a Petco store.The driver was not injured, but his truck sustained heavy damage. The collision damaged the front door and broke several windows.No other injuries were reported.A building inspector was summoned to the scene to examine the pet store. 749

(KGTV) — The Dehesa School District Board voted 4-0 Friday afternoon to place their superintendent on paid administrative leave amid a fraud investigation.Earlier this week, the San Diego District Attorney’s Office charged Superintendent Nancy Hauer with one count of misappropriating public funds.She was one of 11 people charged in a statewide scheme, in which the DA says two men siphoned more than million in state money through a network of 19 charter schools.“The defendants sought out small school districts with limited experience in oversight and proposed they authorize online charter schools to earn additional public funds in the form of oversight fees,” the DA’s Office wrote in a summary of the charges.At Friday’s special Dehesa School District Board meeting, the board spent an hour and a half in closed session with legal counsel discussing Hauer’s employment.Board President, Cindy White refused an interview with 10News.On the dais, Board Vice President Karl Backer told the audience, “we have initiated new legal council to peel apart the charter operations to make sure sound practices and legal compliance is met.” 1165
