SHANGHAI, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- All entertainment activities at the Shanghai World Expo will be suspended Sunday in a show of respect for the victims of a massive mudslide in northwest China's Gansu Province.The Chinese national flags at the Expo Garden would fly at half-mast, and both the music broadcast at the opening and during the day would be stopped, the Shanghai Expo Bureau announced Saturday.Sun Weimin, the Expo Bureau's concierge director, said flags of the Bureau of International Expositions and the Shanghai World Expo would also fly at half-mast.Other Expo participants could decide for themselves whether to fly their flags at half-mast.The announcement was in line with that of the State Council, China's cabinet, which ordered suspension of all public entertainment and that Chinese flags fly at half-mast Sunday.The mudslide, which hit Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, on Aug. 8 has killed at least 1,239 people and an estimated 505 are still missing.According to the Expo Bureau, the Gansu Pavilion will hold a "solemn and simple" ceremony starting 10 a.m. Sunday. The big screen in the pavilion will broadcast pictures and videos of disaster relief in Zhouqu County.On Saturday night, a performance from Chongqing Municipality will include a tribute to victims of the Aug. 8 mudslide.Almost 100 performances and cultural activities scheduled for Sunday would be suspended. A performance by the Panama national troupe, scheduled Sunday morning at the Panama Pavilion, would be held on Saturday evening, a pavilion spokesman told Xinhua.Sunday also marked the National Pavilion Day for Equatorial Guinea. BEIJING, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorms and floods sweeping through south China have left at least 118 people dead and 47 missing since July 1, said a statement on the Civil Affairs Ministry website Wednesday.By 4 p.m. Wednesday, more than 32.3 million people in 10 southern provinces and Chongqing Municipality had been affected by continuous rainstorms and floods, the ministry said.About 101,000 houses were destroyed and close to 1.1 million people had been relocated, it said.Direct economic losses were estimated at 22.2 billion yuan (about 3.3 billion U.S. dollars).In Anhui Province alone, at least four people had been confirmed dead since July 8, whereas direct economic losses amounted to 2.3 billion yuan.The ministry had allocated 3,000 tents, 3,000 folding beds, and 20,000 quilts to Anhui.In Hubei Province, rain-triggered floods and disasters have left 28 people dead and two others missing since July 3, the provincial civil affairs administration said Wednesday.Rains and floods have disrupted lives of 9.24 million people, forcing more than 256,700 people to be relocated. BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhuanet) --Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co is expected to complete it takeover of Swedish luxury car brand Volvo from US automaker Ford Motor Co on Monday after getting government approval for the deal.Ministry of Commerce officials told China Daily on Thursday that the government cleared the Volvo deal on Monday 26, after the National Development and Reform Commission cleared the proposal last week.Geely has also got the necessary anti-trust approvals from the European Union and the US government for the deal.Li Shufu (center), chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding Co, arrives for a news conference in Beijing earlier this year. BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- China's trade surplus would likely fall noticeably this year as exports outlook would not be optimistic while imports would remain robust, Ministry of Commerce spokesman Yao Jian said at a briefing Saturday.Exports growth would slow after July, Yao forecast, adding the surge in exports in May was due to a low comparison basis last year. China's exports in May surged 48.5 percent year on year, customs data released Thursday.China's trade surplus in the first five months fell 59.9 percent to 35.39 billion U.S. dollars. The figure in 2009 topped 196.07 billion U.S. dollars, down 34.2 percent year on year.Yao attributed the weak export outlook to the European sovereign debt crisis, rising commodity prices and labor costs."In the following months, the fallout from the debt crisis in Europe would gradually become apparent, and China would closely watch changes in its important exports markets including Germany, Spain and Italy," Yao said.China would maintain stable trade policies amid the crisis, and might adjust some policies in some specific industries for environmental protection purposes."Stable trade policies are a top priority when the external outlook is not clear," he said.Yao also told reporters that attempts by some U.S. lawmakers to include China's exchange rate policy into trade investigations on China's exports of aluminum extrusions and coated paper lacked factual support and did not conform to rules of the World Trade Organization.The WTO regulated trade policies instead of a country's overall financial or foreign exchange policies, he said.

GUANLING, Guizhou, June 30 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers have recovered eight bodies from the ruins of a southwest China village, two days after a devastating rain-triggered landslide destroyed 37 houses and buried 99 villagers under mud, authorities said Wednesday.As of 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, 91 residents of Dazhai Village, Guanling County, Guizhou Province, remained missing, said officials at the rescue headquarters.From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday the bodies of three buried villagers were recovered, bringing the confirmed death toll to eight, said the officials.A total of 26 heavy backhoes had removed 100,000 cubic meters of clay. Some 2,000 people took part in the rescue work, said Pu Jianjiang, head of the provincial work safety bureau.The landslide brought down about 1.5 to 2 million cubic meters of mud, which was unstable and likely to trigger additional landslides, said Yin Yueping, a researcher with the Ministry of Land and Resources.The landslide struck 37 homes in Dazhai Village at 2:30 p.m. Monday.At least 1,000 villagers who lived in the area have since been evacuated.
