NEW YORK (AP) — J.C. Penney says it is closing 154 stores nationwide in what it is calling the first phase of its efforts to shrink its footprint. According to USA Today, the retailer received bankruptcy court approval on Thursday to begin liquidation sales at stores that are permanently closing. The Plano, Texas-based retailer said it could take about 10 to 16 weeks to complete the closures. “While closing stores is always an extremely difficult decision, our store optimization strategy is vital to ensuring we emerge from both Chapter 11 and the COVID-19 pandemic as a stronger retailer with greater financial flexibility to allow us to continue serving our loyal customers for decades to come,” said Jill Soltau, chief executive officer of JCPenney in a press release. “I am incredibly grateful to our talented associates for their ongoing dedication and their passion for meeting and exceeding our customers’ expectations during this difficult and uncertain time. All impacted associates will be treated with the utmost consideration and respect.”Penney filed for bankruptcy protection last month, making it the biggest retailer to do since the coronavirus pandemic forced non-essential stores to be shut down temporarily. NEW YORK (AP) — Phil Griffin is stepping down after 12 years as MSNBC president, the first major post-election change in the news industry.NBC Universal News Group Chairman Cesar Conde says Rashida Jones will replace Griffin.Jones, who is currently the head of breaking news at NBC and recently directed the network's coverage of the 2020 election, has been with NBC News for the past seven years.She is the first Black executive to lead a cable news network, and Conde has said increasing diversity is one of his top goals."Rashida is the right person to lead MSNBC forward into a new era," said Conde in a press release. "She's an exceptional leader with an outstanding track record, laser-like focus, and grace under pressure."According to the press release, Jones will take over on Feb. 1.Conde says Griffin has left MSNBC in the best shape it has ever been."Six straight record years. NEW YORK (KGTV/AP) -- Macy's is hiring more temporary workers to handle online orders for the holiday shopping season.Macy's says it will hire 18,000 workers to fulfill online orders and other tasks at warehouses devoted to e-commerce operations. That's an increase of 3,000 from a year ago. Overall, Macy's temporary hiring is expected at 80,000, down from 83,000 a year ago.The overall decline contrasts with rival Target Corp., which announced earlier this week that it was hiring 100,000 people to work at its stores, an increase of 40 percent from a year ago. The retailer also plans to hire 4,500 workers to help pack and ship online orders at its warehouses. 678

New numbers uncovered by a CNN investigation show an alarming number of gun mishaps happening at the hands of federal air marshals, and it’s prompting some to call for a new review of how the program operates and whether air marshals are needed at all. Last year, an incident captured national attention, when a passenger found an air marshal's loaded service weapon in the plane's bathroom. According to CNN’s investigation, it wasn’t an isolated incident. According to the report, the Transportation Security Administration’s Office of Inspection documented more than 200 cases of air marshals allegedly misusing or misbehaving with their weapons between 2005 and 2017. Nineteen of those cases involve marshals accidentally firing their weapons. More than 70 involve lost or misplaced weapons, including some left in airplane bathrooms or in airports. And at least 13 of the incidents involved alcohol.  "I’d always get that there’s going to be a few incidents just because that's life; that's how it works,” says Jeff Price, an aviation security expert at Metropolitan State University of Denver. “But this many incidents, particularly how many are related to alcohol, that’s a serious concern, and there’s underlying problems there that need to be addressed.” Price wrote a book on aviation security and believes the program works as a deterrent. However, he says an overhaul of the air marshal program may be needed. "So, I think it’s definitely time for a stem-to-stern review of the entire air marshal program,” Price says. “I’m not advocating we get rid of it, but I am saying we should improve it, so it’s what we really envisioned." A former special agent in charge of an air marshal field office believes, when put in context with the thousands of marshals the agency has, the numbers are still relatively small. "You'd hope to have a 0 percent error rate, particularly when employees are carrying weapons,” the former official says. "But you employ human beings, and humans are going to have failures." The TSA responded to the CNN report with their own statement, saying reports of misconduct are taken seriously and investigated, adding that they take disciplinary action in the wake of any misconduct.  2280

NEW YORK — Travelers from states with a high rate of coronavirus transmission are now required to provide contact information upon entering New York, or they could face a hefty fine.New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the emergency order during a coronavirus briefing on Monday in an effort to enforce the state’s travel advisory, which mandates travelers from designated states to self-quarantine for 14 days when they arrive in New York.Travelers who do not comply could face a ,000 fine and a hearing for a court-ordered quarantine.Cuomo, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont announced the travel advisory in late June as the number of coronavirus cases began to surge in other parts of the country.“We worked really hard to get the viral transmission rate down, and we don’t want to see it go up,” Cuomo had said of the decision to implement the advisory.The travel advisory applies to states that have an infection rate above 10 cases per 100,000 people or if 10% of the total population tests positive.
