(CNS) - Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia announced Monday that his stepfather died due to complications from COVID-19, one day after the family held a memorial service for the mayor's mother."We are incredibly saddened to share that my stepfather, Greg O'Donnell, has passed away due to complications from COVID-19," Garcia said in a statement. "It's a heartbreaking loss for our entire family, especially for my brother Jake."O'Donnell, who died Sunday at 58, "was a kind and good-hearted man, an amazing father and grandfather, and the best husband our mom could have ever hoped for. He worked hard for his family and started his own successful small business as a contractor with his brothers," Garcia said.Garcia's mother, Gaby O'Donnell, a longtime health care worker, died late last month due to complications from the coronavirus at the age of 61. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Utah man was held without bail Thursday on charges of murder in the deaths of an off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy and another man.Rhett McKenzie Nelson, 30, of St. George, wore a navy blue jail uniform during his initial arraignment in Los Angeles Superior Court as the family of Deputy Joseph G. Solano and uniformed deputies with black mourning bands over the badges looked on.Authorities allege Nelson shot Dmitry Koltsov from his vehicle in downtown Los Angeles on Monday, attempted to kill Aleksandr Chudetckii, then fatally shot Solano inside a Jack in the Box in suburban Alhambra. They also say he committed two robberies in Long Beach.Nelson's family says he suffers from mental illness and an opiate addiction. Defense attorney Jenn Bartick was not immediately available for comment.Nelson is due back in court on July 22 for further arraignment. The judge on Friday approved a re-sentencing request from prosecutors for Emon Barnes. The 34-year-old Compton man is expected to be freed next week. Barnes was 15 when he was arrested for a Compton shooting. He was sentenced to 40 years to life for attempted murder. Barnes says he was home with his mother at the time of the shooting.
