KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The numbers are in: more Americans will travel this Thanksgiving than the past 12. The travel organization AAA released its annual holiday travel forecast Thursday. It predicts nearly 51 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles to celebrate the holiday. That's a 3 percent increase from last year, and the highest number since 2005. Travelers can expect to pay more for gasoline than years past, but less for airfare. AAA expects 89 percent of travelers to get to their destination by driving. To avoid getting caught in traffic, experts say you should stay off the roads the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving, especially in the afternoons. That's when normal workweek commuters and travelers are on the road at the same time. "Plan ahead. Try to make sure you're getting out the door early in the morning, if possible. (KGTV) - A researcher at UC San Diego just got a million grant to further his work into nanosponge therapy.Liangfang Zhang, a professor of nanoengineering and bioengineering, has been working on creating macrophage cellular nanosponges, tiny particles covered in white blood cell membranes, to treat sepsis and other diseases."They can be used to bind to the virus and neutralize the virus," Zhang says. "So now the virus would lose the ability to infect the host cells."The nanosponges act as decoys, tricking a disease or virus into binding with them instead of with human cells. While the initial aim is to treat sepsis, Zhang says it has applications to other deadly diseases, including COVID-19."The formulation that we're developing for treatment of Sepsis is the same formulation that you will use with COVID-19," he says.The grant comes from CARB-X, a Boston-based medical philanthropy that specializes in funding research into antibacterial treatments. Zhang says the money will be used for his company, Cellics Therapeutics, to further advance the research into clinical trials, FDA approval, and production of the nanosponge therapy.Steve Chen, president and chief medical officer of Cellics Therapeutics, says he's hopeful they can advance the nanosponges into human trials within two years."We're essentially looking at how this platform can treat not just infectious disease or future pandemics, but you could actually have a lot of applications in any type of autoimmune diseases or any type of inflammatory diseases," says Chen.In an early study published this year, Zhang's research showed the nanosponges were around 90% effective at blocking infections from taking hold.RELATED: UC San Diego researchers testing nanosponges to fight COVID-19Chen says the research and trial period may take too long for the nanosponges to be used during the current coronavirus pandemic. KILLEEN, Texas — Officials at Fort Hood say they have formally opened an investigation into allegations that Pfc. Vanessa Guillen was sexually harassed prior to her disappearance.Guillen was last seen at Fort Hood on April 22 between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the parking lot of her Regimental Engineer Squadron Headquarters. She hasn't been seen or heard from since.The announcement comes days after officials at Fort Hood said there was no credible evidence of sexual assault against Guillen.Third Cavalry Regiment commander, Col. Ralph Overland, has appointed an investigating team to look into the allegations. The investigators will gather the evidence and present findings to Overland for review upon completion."I opened an investigation concerning the information provided by the Guillen Family that Pfc. Vanessa Guillen was harassed prior to her disappearance," Overland said in a statement. "I take allegations of sexual harassment very seriously and we are conducting a thorough investigation."Army Criminal Investigation Command is offering a reward of up to ,000 for information regarding Guillen's whereabouts. KENOSHA, Wis. — The father of Jacob Blake says his son was left paralyzed from the waist down after he was shot by a Kenosha police officer Sunday.Blake’s father told the Chicago Sun-Times that he was told his son was shot eight times during the Sunday evening confrontation with police, which was captured on cellphone video and led to two nights of unrest in the city that's along Lake Michigan between Milwaukee and Chicago.The father, who is also named Jacob Blake, said he was driving from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Kenosha to be with his son.He said his son has “eight holes” in his body and that doctors don’t know if the paralysis will be permanent.Protests in Blake's honor happened across the country Monday night, including in Portland, San Diego, New York, Minneapolis, and Denver.Police declared a riot in Portland after fires were set outside of the offices of the police association. In San Diego, at least three protesters were arrested.Locally, anger over Blake's shooting spilled into the streets of Kenosha for a second night Monday. Police again fired tear gas at hundreds of protesters who defied a curfew, threw bottles and shot fireworks at law enforcement guarding the courthouse.Wisconsin Democratic Gov. Tony Evers activated 125 members of the National Guard to assist local law enforcement Monday. Police fired the tear gas about 30 minutes after an 8 p.m. curfew took effect, but many protesters remained out hours later.Blake was shot by Kenosha police just after 5 p.m. Sunday.
