SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A North Park family is appealing for tips after a former high school football star - and recent college graduate - was injured in a drive-by shooting."They thought it was fireworks at first," said Dawn Kinder.Sisters Denisha Montgomery and Dawn Kinder say two Fridays ago, their brother Devante Kinder, 24, and three friends had spent a day at the beach and were driving up to his driveway near Meade Ave. around 9:40 p.m. Devante was at the wheel of the used Mercedes SUV he had saved up to purchase, when neighbors heard about nine shots ring out, and a car drive away. Devante was shot twice in the face."The only thing he could think of was to save his life, and he drove himself to the hospital," said Montgomery.Soon after, his sisters got the news."Unreal and didn't believe it at first actually. There is no way he could be injured in this way," said Montgomery.One of the bullet entered Devante's neck, shattered his cheekbone and lodged in his sinus cavity. The other one grazed his cheekbone."He's devastated ... asking himself why it was him," said Montgomery.His sisters say Devante does not have any enemies. Devante, a football standout at Mission Bay High School, went on to graduate from San Jose State six months ago. He returned home and recently got hired for engineering position in March."Starting his career, saving money. All he could talk about was buying his own condo," said Montgomery.Those plans have been put on pause by the drive-by shooting. Amid a national dialogue on racial injustice, Devante's sisters say they know many families impacted by violence."It's something that shouldn't be happening. We don't like to think it was the color of his skin. We don't want to," said Montgomery."But the thought is there as well," said Kinder.Devante remains on a feeding tube and faces a long road to recovery. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A preliminary 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck in Inyo County, just north of Ridgecrest, on Wednesday.The quake occurred at about 10:40 a.m. in the Lone Pine area, about 60 miles north of Ridgecrest, according to the USGS. There have not been any immediate reports of injury or damage.The initial 5.8 earthquake was followed by several smaller shake-ups, ranging from magnitude 2.5 to 4.6.USGS's "Did You Feel It?" map reported the quake was felt as far away as Fresno to the north, Los Angeles to the south, and Las Vegas, Nev., to the east. There was no threat of a tsunami due to the quake, according to the National Tsunami Warning Center.The earthquake comes a day after a 7.5-magnitude quake struck Mexico's southern coastline, just east of the popular tourist destination Huatulco, Oaxaca. 822

San Diego (KGTV) -- A person was killed when their motorcycle crashed into a guardrail while riding with friends.Police received the report of the crash at the intersection of Sweetwater and Shannonbrook Court just after 10:30 p.m. in Lemon Grove.Police closed the intersection to investigate how the motorcyclist lost control.The victim died at the scene, their name was not immediately released. 405

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report found that nearly half of U.S. renters are spending 30 percent or more of their income on rent.The report also found that nearly one quarter of renters spend half of their income or more on rent.The share of cost-burdened renters has doubled since 1960, when just 24 percent of renters were burdened in the U.S., according to Apartment List.RELATED: Rent increases in San Diego due to higher demand, lack of supplyIn San Diego, those numbers rose significantly. In 2016, more than 57 percent of San Diego renters were cost-burdened, meaning they spent 30 percent of their income or more on rent. San Diego ranked 94 for affordability out of the nation’s top 100 largest metros. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local businessman is now accused in a child porn case, several years after he managed to get off the sex offender registry.Along Tokalon Street in Bay Park, there is a sense of disbelief. A neighbor of some 7 years - Joseph Welsh - arrested in Fontana over the weekend.Police say parents confronted him and took his phone after he took photos of girls in bathing suits at a birthday party.Search warrants executed at his home and his business - a Segway rental outlet on Mission Boulevard - netted several electronic devices containing child porn, according to investigators.The neighbors' sense of shock was magnified because of what they didn't know about his past: a conviction in the 1990s in San Bernardino county for possessing child porn, and annoyance of a child.Police say in 2014, the courts deemed him not a danger to the public and removed him from the registry.It's a maneuver many can't understand.An acquaintance of Welsh, 47, told 10News those who worked near him became "creeped out" because he was always photographing surf schools and flying drones on the beach.In one instance, concerns led to an acquaintance to warn a teenager who knew Welsh to stay away from him.To search the California Megan's Law website for registry results, click here. 1308
