SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After getting approved by voters, San Diego State is moving forward with its SDSU Mission Valley Plan. As they are still working out the finishing touches, community members are offering their suggestions to organizers. SDSU Mission Valley still calls for a stadium, housing for students and the public, retail space, offices and a river park. Local land use and design professionals met in Balboa Park this morning to offer their ideas on how to enhance and improve the existing plans."They want to make sure that this very large development... isn't like an island in the middle of Mission Valley," says Cary Lowe, with C3 San Diego. Community members want to ensure the project "connects fluidly with the surrounding community."There are other concerns, as well. Once construction begins, crews may have to remediate a gas plume that once sat under the site."A number of people have raised the issue of the subsurface contamination of the site," says Lowe. This has "been a long time issue because of a leak from fuel tanks in Murphy Canyon."Lowe says there is an elaborate plan for the possible contamination removal. But as negotiations continue, it is unclear if the city or university will be paying for it. Land use and design professionals estimate the project to begin towards the beginning of next year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Among the propositions that will be on the November ballot in California, Proposition 17 will ask voters to decide whether or not to allow individuals on parole to vote.Voters will vote "yes" or "no" on the proposition, which is an amendment to the state's constitution introduced by Sacramento Assemblymember Kevin McCarty, according to BallotPedia.In California, those who are "mentally incompetent or imprisoned or on parole for the conviction of a felony" for a state or federal sentence are not allowed to vote.The passage of Proposition 17 would instead direct the state to only disqualify those who are currently serving a sentence for the conviction of a felony and allow those on parole for a felony conviction to vote."Parole is not an extension of punishment. It's a reintegration time for someone to come back in their community," says Shay Franco-Clausen, the Yes on Prop 17 Campaign Manager. "What better way to make them feel that they have a stake in the community is there than giving the right to them."Those who support Prop 17 argue, "when a person completes their prison sentence, they should be encouraged to reenter society and have a stake in their community. Restoring their voting rights does that. Civic engagement is connected to lower rates of recidivism. Let's get her rescued, let's get her rescued!'" SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A University of San Diego professor has been suspended from campus over alleged misconduct, the university confirmed to 10News.The professor's behavior reportedly violated the university's policy and "is antithetical to our mission and values," the university said in part. The professor was not named.USD officials are currently investigating the incident. The school said in a statement:"We are in the process of investigating the complaint. Our commitment to protecting employee privacy restricts our ability to share names or details of the incident. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- After shutting down six months ago amid the deadly coronavirus pandemic, the city of Anaheim is calling on California Gov. Gavin Newsom to reopen Disneyland Resort theme parks.According to the Voice of Orange County website, Anaheim Mayor Harry Sidhu said the city is looking at a 0 million budget deficit. Sidhu added that half of the city's general fund budget comes from Disneyland's revenue and the Anaheim Convention Center.The city is now asking Newsom to issue COVID-related health guidelines for theme parks.USA Today reported park officials believe theme parks have been left waiting on the sidelines while other parts of the state economy have reopened. Anaheim is currently in Stage 2 of its reopening plan, which excludes theme parks.Both Disneyland and Universal Studios in Southern California shut their doors to the public in mid-March after Newsom's order to suspend large gatherings.California theme park officials say they've had time to work on reopening plans that would allow them to safely welcome guests.
