FRESNO, Calif. (KGTV) - More than 200 Marines and Sailors from Camp Pendleton have been helping in the Creek Fire fight for nearly two weeks."This is why Marines sign up, this is why they join the Marine Corps, is to serve," Commanding Officer of the 7th Engineer Support Battalion, Lt. Col. Melina Mesta said during a trip to The Sierra National Forest last weekend.The 233 Marines and Sailors with the 7th ESB deployed September 19th after a day of firefighting training on Camp Pendleton. Lt. Col. Mesta said this task force is equipped with the right tools to pivot on a moment's notice to an unconventional mission like this."Like we say in the Marine Corps, 'Any Climb, Any Place.' We like to adapt to our environment and anything that is asked of us," Operation Chief Master Sgt. Juan Guillen said.Mesta described the mission at the Creek Fire as a lot of manual labor, "really hard dirty work with some long hours."Master Sgt. Guillen said Marines and Sailors wake up at 5:30 a.m., wash up, and go to a briefing. Then they head out around 7:30 a.m. and work the fire line until around 6:30 p.m. That's an 11 hour work day every day, with breaks to keep them safe."They're assessing any hot spots any areas that could potentially flare up." Master Sgt. Guillen said there is also a night shift that patrols with the same mission.Master Sgt. Guillen acknowledged how difficult the work is and said Marines and Sailors appreciate what firefighters do. He said one of the differences in this work is where the heavy backpack filled with supplies sits on your back as a firefighter.He said Marines are used to having a heavy pack that sits high up on the back. This versus what they use on the fire line, which is much lower, closer to the waist to allow for bending and work closer to the ground.During their deployment, containment of the fire jumped 22% to 44%, making a tangible difference that hits close to home."It's an honor to be back here and help out the community. I spent a lot of time up here camping near where the Creek Fire's at." Master Sgt. Guillen said he grew up in Fresno, his parents were migrant workers in the fields.He said he's thankful to see businesses nearby opening back up now that the fire's threat is dwindling."We're here to support as long as needed and the mindset of the Marines and Sailors that are out here is that mission accomplishment is our priority," he said.All of the Marines and Sailors at the Creek Fire volunteered for this mission. For the first time, the FDA has authorized coronavirus tests that can be sold directly to Americans who do not have to go through a health care provider.An emergency use authorization is not a full approval from the FDA, but allows the tests to be used in a non-clinical or non-hospital setting.The LabCorp’s Pixel COVID-19 Test Home Collection Kit can be used by any adult age 18 or over. The test kit allows individuals to take a nasal swab at home and send the sample to LabCorp for testing.Those who test positive will receive a call from a health care provider. Negative tests are delivered via an online portal or through email.The FDA says that the tests can be purchased online or in stores, and can help people determine whether they need to quarantine.“This is the first kit for consumers to self-collect a nasal sample for COVID-19 in their home that does not require a prescription,” said Jeff Shuren, M.D., J.D., director of FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “While many home collection kits can be prescribed with a simple online questionnaire, this newly authorized direct-to-consumer collection kit removes that step from the process, allowing anyone to collect their sample and send it to the lab for processing.”The company says the out of pocket cost is 9 for those who do not have the test covered by insurance. For frontline healthcare workers battling COVID-19, the hospital can feel like a war room. Patients are in need of quick help. Some face life-threatening symptoms that need immediate care. Some cannot be saved.They are split-second decisions that have to be made as more patients funnel into hospital beds, and the effects can weight heavily on those tasking with making them.“The mental health symptoms tend to peak about 12 months after the actual event,” said Dr. Chris Thurstone, director of behavioral health at Denver’s largest hospital, Denver Health.In January, a few months before the pandemic hit, Denver Health implemented a program developed at Johns Hopkins called Resilience in Stressful Events (RISE) to help its employees deal with burnout symptoms, unknown to the influx that was to come.In the first few weeks of the program, the hospital’s drop-in center saw around 30 hospital employees a day. Now, months into the pandemic the same drop-in center is seeing more than 300 hospital employees a day.“[Frontline healthcare workers] describe it as this different of burnout than they’ve felt before,” said Dr. Thurstone.“We’re certainly seeing increased rates of people who are struggling and having a difficult time,” added clinical psychologist Dr. Thom Dunn.It is an unprecedented challenge among doctors, nurses, and other hospital staff that is not only being felt in the United States but globally.Researches in Wuhan found 30 to 50 percent of healthcare providers were in a burnout stage before COVID-19. Now, that number is up to 75 percent of healthcare providers.“Depression, anxiety, insomnia, substance use: those are the four things we watch out for,” said Dr. Thurstone. “As things start to settle down and people actually get a chance to breathe and think and be themselves again, they might notice that they’re not completely themselves.”The RISE program offers counseling and an area for frontline workers to take a load off, through board games and other activities that could help ameliorate the stressors they are experiencing elsewhere in the hospital.At Denver Health, calls into RISE have increased tenfold as well, proving that once COVID-19 becomes manageable, another epidemic may soon start to emerge.“We can’t just get through COVID and then pretend nothing happened,” said Dr. Thurstone. “This is placing a stress and strain on every human being, and healthcare workers are human beings and no exception.” 2458
Feeding America, a network of 200 food banks across the United States, expressed concern on Wednesday on pending legislation that could strip food stamps from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program away from nearly 3 million Americans. House Resolution No. 2 is up for consideration by the House of Representatives, which would add employment stipulations to some food stamp recipients, and their families. Feeding America's primary concern is that the nation's food banks will not be able to handle increased demand if the legislation becomes law. "Feeding America's nationwide network of member food banks will not be able to make up for the lost meals," Feeding America said in a statement. "We urge lawmakers in the House to reconsider their approach and amend their legislation before sending it to the Senate to ensure that the final legislation does not take food off the table for families who need it."According to a Congressional Budget Office projection, the federal government would reduce spending on direct benefits by .2 billion from 2019 to 2028. But the CBO claims it would cost the federal government in additional .7 billion in administrative costs to enforce the employment requirement. Overall, the federal government would be projected to save .5 billion over the 10-year period if the employment requirement is enacted. The CBO said that beginning in 2021, food stamp recipients between the ages of 18 and 59 who are neither disabled nor caring for a child under the age of 6 would need to either work or participate in a training program for 20 hours each week; that requirement would increase to 25 hours each week in 2026.The push to add work requirements to those receiving government assistance got a boost last month when President Donald Trump signed an executive order, which was intended to reduce poverty. A record 66 percent of respondents in this year's Gallup poll say they support legalizing cannabis, up from 64 percent last year."I think a lot of consumers are coming out of the shadows, and they just feel more comfortable talking about cannabis, learning about cannabis,” says Trey Fisher.Fisher, with Medicine Man dispensary in Denver, Colorado, says particularly of note in 2018, is the emerging client base of women and the elderly. "The elderly, they're just looking for relief,” explains Fisher. “They're just looking for a product that works, and they don't care about the social stigma anymore."Individual dispensaries are certainly seeing growth, but industry insiders say the pot business as a whole is still being held back."It’s still completely illegal under federal law, and that's sort of putting a damper on the whole industry,” says Raza Lawrence, a cannabis law attorney.Lawrence specializes in helping entrepreneurs obtain cannabis licenses.
