In recent years, scientists have noticed an increased frequency of tornadoes in the Southeast, carving a deadly path in what's called Dixie Alley. While Tornado Alley in the Great Plains still leads in the number of tornadoes, more are appearing in the South. And tornadoes shifting to this region can take a devastating toll. On Sunday, an EF-4 tornado ripped through Alabama's Lee County killing 23 people and cutting a path of destruction at least 24 miles long. It's not an anomaly that tornadoes appear in the Southeast every year, but they present different vulnerabilities, said Victor Gensini, professor of meteorology at Northern Illinois University."As you move east from Kansas to Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, the population density increases rapidly and we also have an issue in the Southeast of more mobile homes," he said. "If you get hit in a mobile home from a tornado, you're much more likely to be killed. You just have a really unique exposure and vulnerability problem."Gensini was co-author on a study that started tracking tornadoes in 1979 and they observed a shift towards the Southeast around 2008.Dixie Alley includes portions of East Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. Tornado Alley includes the area from central Texas stretching north to Iowa, and from central Kansas and Nebraska east to western Ohio, according to the 1401
In a speech from the Senate floor Thursday, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) slammed the House's adoption of articles of impeachment as a "predetermined end" to a "partisan crusade," but did not give any specifics about the impending trial to be held in the Senate.McConnell's statement comes hours after the House of Representatives voted to impeach President Donald Trump in a vote that was largely along party lines. All but two Democrats voted in favor of the articles; no Republicans voted in favor.McConnell warned the impeachment risked "deeply damaging" institutions in the United States and claimed it could open the door for more partisan impeachments in the future."If the Senate blesses this historically low bar (of impeachment), we will invite the impeachment of every future president," McConnell said.Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York), responded shortly thereafter, claiming McConnell failed to offer a defense for President Trump's actions in McConnell's 30-minute speech.Schumer also slammed Trump's decision to not participate in impeachment proceedings, and said Democrats would welcome the Trump administration to offer their own defense."Why is (McConnell) so afraid of relevant witnesses and documents?" Scumer said. "...can none of the president's men come defend him under oath?"McConnell also claimed that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was "afraid" to send the articles of impeachment over to the Senate for a trial. Pelosi said Wednesday night that the House would delay sending the articles to the Senate until she could get assurances that the Senate would hold a fair trial.Last week, McConnell told news outlets that he is openly conferring with White House counsel on defenses for Trump. The comments sparked a call among Democrat lawmakers for McConnell to recuse himself during the Senate trial. 1866

Just when stores started filling their toilet paper shelves again, other items are suddenly in short supply. Most of them have nothing to do with cleaning. You'll recall that first it was hand sanitizer and Lysol wipes that became impossible to find back in February — which feels like it was three years ago in the time-dilated Twilight Zone of 2020.March arrived with face mask and toilet paper shortages, and cleaning sprays and products disappeared from store shelves.April brought the first shortages of beef, chicken and pork as processing plants shut down.As those items get restocked, other wells are running dry.Newer items that are getting hard to findBike shops across the country have been so busy during the pandemic that it's almost 758
