SAN DIEGO — A San Diego-based stem cell research institute believes its discovery may have saved the life of a COVID patient on death's doorstep.GIOSTAR infused a 53-year-old man in a coma with Mesenchymal stem-cells taken from an umbilical cord. Prior to that, all other treatments were failing. "He was having a stroke, he was under dialysis, liver function was declining," said Dr. Anand Srivastava, co-founder of GIOSTAR. "Nothing was working."The patient, whose identity is not being released due to privacy laws, had been in a coma in a New Jersey hospital. GIOSTAR got special clearance from the Food and Drug Administration to try the stem-cell treatment. Srivastava said the patient began to recover, gradually over three weeks. "Slowly, his renal and liver function came closer to normal," he said. "He came out from the intubation, and now he is talking."The family, in an interview with GIOSTAR, said they had lost all hope. Srivastava said this treatment could be key as society awaits a vaccine. GIOSTAR is planning to do a double-blind study to confirm its conclusions about its treatment. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 19-year-old man was behind bars Friday on suspicion of fatally shooting an acquaintance at a San Ysidro motel.Customs officers who recognized Jonathan Orduno of Chula Vista from a be-on-the-lookout bulletin took him into custody at the San Ysidro Point of Entry on Thursday night in connection with the death last week of 22-year-old Adrian Torres-Garcia, according to San Diego police.A housekeeper found Torres-Garcia dead in a rented room at a motel in the 100 block of Calle Primera shortly before noon March 18, homicide Lt. Matt Dobbs said. The victim, a South Bay native with no known permanent address, died of at least one gunshot to his upper body.RELATED: San Diego police investigate death of man at San Ysidro motelDobbs declined to disclose a suspected motive for the shooting or release details on what led investigators to identify Orduno as the alleged killer. The lieutenant also would not say if the suspect was trying to leave the country or was re-entering the United States at the time of his arrest.Police have not recovered the gun that killed Torres-Garcia, Dobbs said.Orduno was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of first- degree murder. SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Planning Commission advanced a plan Thursday that would make the Midway District more vibrant by adding housing, commercial projects and parks.The plan would grow the area’s housing from 2,000 to 11,000 over the next 20 years. Business development in the area would also generate a similar number of jobs.The district would also boast nearly 30 acres of parks. "We think it's an important opportunity to provide for the park needs of the community," project manager Vickie White said.The parks would all fit into an improved pedestrian and bile network that would make use of existing transit infrastructure. The city hopes the network would reduce the area’s reliance on cars."We're focused on creating comfortable connections along transit corridors to make this a more appealing area to walk or bike -- we see a lot off opportunities for modal increase in this area," White said.Reducing reliance on cars also complies with a citywide climate action plan. "If there's one real, glaring problem with this community it's a lack of connectivity from district to district," Commissioner William Hofman said.The area around sports arena and Valley View Casino Center would also get additional streets and paths.The plan includes a variety of possibilities for the sports arena including operating it as is or demolishing it and pushing for other land-use opportunities.The plan will now go to the City Council’s Smart Growth and Land Use Committee in May. 1493

"The future is we're going to be here and we're going to get through this. I have to really question or ask myself if I want to stay in this business."For the second time since March, Cloak & Petal has been relegated to takeout only due to the new shutdown order. Bars, wineries and personal care salons are totally shut down, while hotels may have to turn away away non-essential out-of-state travelers. All of this - without the help of forgivable federal small business loans and a 0 dollar a week boost in unemployment, key stimulus during the first shutdown in march.The state says as of October, more than 118,000 San Diegans worked in food and drinking establishments.At the Intercontinental San Diego hotel on the waterfront, General Manager Chuck Abbott said he had to let go 10 to 20 percent of his staff - now that outdoor dining is outlawed.
