(KGTV) - A ruptured gas line forced one building to evacuate in Chula Vista Friday.Chula Vista fire crews discovered a one-inch gas line sheared with gas blowing in the 100 block of 3rd Avenue around 3 p.m. A nearby building was evacuated, according to CVFD.Nearby Fredericka Manor Retirement Community also advised its residents and visitors to shelter in place.Firefighters were not able to immediately determine the cause of the break. While it may look different to us, for preschool kids, this is all they know.At St. Rose of Lima Catholic School in Chula Vista, when a student and his or her parent arrive, they go through a health screening. If either shows symptoms, the child is sent home.Adults are also not allowed to come into the classrooms and have to stay outside.Glenda Martinez, preschool director of Daniel’s Den, on the campus of St. Rose of Lima Catholic School, said following the new California guidelines is manageable, what can be challenging is helping her young students understand the rules.“It’s really hard for them to understand what’s six feet. They say, ‘Ms. Glenda, I can’t do six feet, I only have two!’ I tell them I know that … but that’s what the square is ... that’s six feet. And nobody can go into their square,” said Martinez.And that’s reflected in how she set up her room. Even though they can’t do carpet time right now, she tried to bring imagination and fun back into the classroom.Each student has their own desk or car, that’s parked in their own square, with their own things inside.Right now, sharing isn’t allowed, but she’s found a way to allow them to socialize safely.“Because they have the same toys, I tell them you can play with one toy. I can play with the same kind of toy up to our edge with our masks on. And there’s not a problem, they’re still separating but they can play the same thing,” Martinez said.Another challenge for Martinez and her staff is explaining what the coronavirus is to four-year-old children. That’s why she’s made books to help them understand and they also sing songs.Coronavirus guidelines have also changed the way kids play outside. They can’t use certain equipment because of social distancing concerns.But as Martinez said, this has forced them to get creative.In the end, Martinez said they’re using these changes as an opportunity to teach their students valuable lessons. (KGTV) -- A Chula Vista Police officer was honored with a Medal of Valor and Purple Heart from the Chula Vista Police Department Thursday morning after being stabbed while on duty in 2017.Officer David Sachs was honored with a Medal of Valor for his “extraordinary bravery and willingness to protect the lives of others, without regard for his own safety” the department said. He was also awarded a Purple Heart for his injuries while on duty.On September 19 of 2017, Officer Sachs along with Officer Leo Banales and Chaplain Wes Anderson responded to a home on Monterey Avenue after receiving a report that a man’s neighbor threw a large piece of concrete over his fence, injuring the victim.RELATED: Chula Vista Police officer who shot man recovering from stabbing?When officers arrived, the victim pointed out the suspect’s house. After knocking on the door, the suspect’s mother answered and invited the officers in.Police say, though they didn’t know at the time, the suspect, described as a 6-foot-tall man in his late 20s, was suffering from emotional or psychological distress.After stepping into the home’s kitchen, the suspect started attacking Sachs with a knife, stabbing him multiple times in the face, head and arm.Police say Sachs was able to knock the suspect to the ground while yelling “Knife! Knife! Knife!” to his partners.The suspect then lunged at Banales with a knife before he and Anderson went outside. According to police, Sachs drew his weapon and told the suspect to drop the knife before the suspect blocked the exit and attacked him again with the knife.RELATED: Officer stabbed, suspect shot three times in Chula Vista?Police say Sachs then moved the suspect’s mother behind him for safety and shot the suspect. The suspect collapsed in the dining room after being struck.After hearing the shots, Anderson went back to the home’s front door to help. After more officers arrived, medical aid was given to the hospital who was taken to the hospital where he later died.Sachs was stabbed six times. But some drivers working for popular ride sharing services like Uber and Lyft are willing to break the law.A hidden camera, undercover investigation by Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit exposed those willing to risk children’s lives for the price of a ride.In Michigan, the law is clear: Children younger than eight or shorter than 57 inches have to be in a child safety seat.First responders say it’s a matter of life and death.“I’ve watched a child go forward, go into the windshield and have a crushed skull,” EMS paramedic Gary McMenamin said.WXYZ decided to put Uber and Lyft drivers to the test, to find out just how many were willing to ignore state law and drive a mother and her 2-year-old son without a child safety seat.Emily Gottschling and her son “Weston” hailed six rides — three to Uber and three to Lyft. Gottschling agreed to be part of the hidden camera investigation.After calling six different drivers, five of them were willing to illegally take Gottschling for a ride without a child car seat.“People have gotten in the car and never asked, so we just go,” one driver said.“If you’re alright with it, I’m okay with it,” another driver said.A different driver acknowledged the law, then said, “Well, I’ll be careful.”The last driver would not allow Gottschling into his car for fear if being ticketed. During the investigation, the drivers never actually rode anywhere and no laws were broken.Uber and Lyft both offered statements in response to the investigatiion.  1666
