DAMASCUS, April 26 (Xinhua) -- During his Middle East tour, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Sunday put out a five-point proposal to push forward the Middle East peace process and common development.     Yang, who has visited Egypt, the Palestinian territories, Israel and Syria, said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua that China has been closely following the situation in the Middle East and he has made in-depth exchanges of views with concerned parties on various issues of the region during his Middle East visit. The Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip at the end of 2008 has brought heavy casualties and instability to the region, which shows once again that if the Middle East issue is not been fundamentally solved, there will be no peace and security in this region, he said.     Currently, Israel has formed a new government and the two main Palestinian factions have been holding talks under the mediation of Egypt. Under such circumstances, Yang put the five-point proposal, which includes:     First, the concerned parties should adhere to the peace talks, and firmly promote the peace process on the basis of relevant UN resolutions, the "land for peace" principle, the "Road Map" plan, and the Arab peace initiative, Yang said.     Second, the parties should take positive measures to restore stability and accumulate mutual trust, so as to create conditions for the development of peace process.     Third, China believes the two-state solution should be maintained and calls for an early establishment of an independent Palestinian state and the two countries of Palestine and Israeli live in harmony.     "This is the ultimate way out for the Palestinian issue, which can give guarantee to the Middle East peace and security," Yang said.     Fourth, the international community should continue to pay due attention to the Middle East issue, and deliver its supports to the peace talks, the inner-Palestinian unity and economic growth.     Fifth, the peace negotiations between Palestine and Israel, Syria and Israel, Lebanon and Israel should advance in a coordinated way in order to achieve comprehensive peace across the Middle East region, Yang said.     "As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will continue to maintain close communication and coordination with parties concerned to play a constructive role in pushing for a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Middle East issue," Yang added.     He said he has enunciated China's position on current Middle East issues during the trip. He hoped relevant parties could stick to the peaceful negotiation and accumulate mutual trust in a bid to advance the Middle East peace process.     He said he believes his visits to the four Middle East nations will contribute to the peace process.     Yang left the Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday after meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Mualem.

BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhua) -- China and Peru on Tuesday signed a free trade agreement (FTA) in Beijing, capping over-a-year-long negotiations and legal processes. Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping and his Peruvian counterpart Luis Giampietri Rojas witnessed the signing ceremony in Beijing, with both hailing the deal "a new landmark" in bilateral ties.     "China-Peru agreement is the first FTA package China has signed with a Latin American country," said the Chinese Commerce Ministry. A complementary deal on service trade was signed with Chile in 2008.     "The pact features a high degree of openness," Zhu said, citing phased, free tariffs on more than 90 percent of goods ranging from China's electronic products and machinery to Peru's fish powder and minerals.     Under the deal, both pledged to further open their service sectors and offer national treatment to investors from the other country.     China and Peru also reached agreement on intellectual property, trade rescue, customs procedures and other fields.     The official said the pact would play an important role in helping both nations deal with global financial foes and boosting their own economies.     Trade between the two countries reached 7.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2008, according to Chinese customs authority.     The FTA deal is likely to come into force in early 2010, Zhu said.     Since the beginning of the decade, Beijing has vigorously pursued free trade agreements. So far, China has signed FTA deals with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Chile, Pakistan, New Zealand, Singapore and Peru.     China is also in free trade talks with Australia, the Gulf Cooperation Council, Iceland, Norway and Costa Rica, among others.

He said the situation of the epidemic has been under control in the country. TAIPEI, May 31 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese mainland business delegation arrived in Taiwan Sunday to kick off a buying spree to expand trade ties and offset the effects of the global economic downturn.     The group, organized by the Mainland Association for Cross-Strait Economic and Trade Exchanges, comprised about 80 representatives of 35 companies, including IT and home appliance giants Lenovo, Haier, Changhong and ZTE.     The shopping list could include home appliances, machinery, textiles and foodstuffs manufactured on the island, said Li Shuilin, director of the association and delegation head.     The mainland businesses would hold talks with Taiwan firms in Taipei and Kaohsiung to learn more about their products and market potential in the mainland, Li said.     They would probably make some purchasing orders, although no exact plans had been announced, he added.     The delegation, the first of its kind, was warmly received on the island amid the mainland's repeated calls for collaboration across the Taiwan Strait to cope with the international economic downturn.     This marked a substantial step by the mainland to help boost investment in Taiwan and the purchase of Taiwan products, proposed by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in April, Li said.     The mainland announced last week that seven to nine procurement delegations to Taiwan would be organized from May to September to help develop the island economy during the global downturn.     The China Video Industry Association would organize a visit of leading mainland television producers on Monday to hammer out a planned 2.2-billion-U.S.-dollar contract for TV parts produced in Taiwan.     Also in June, tea merchants and fruit organizations would visit central and south Taiwan. In September, representatives of trading cooperatives from 11 provinces and cities, six industry associations and 13 agricultural products producers will visit the island.     Mainland telecommunications companies, including China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom, also plan purchasing visits the island.
