SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Two San Diego-area teachers are among six state finalists announced Tuesday for the 2020 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.According to the State Department of Education, the award honors teachers who "display subject mastery, appropriate use of instructional methods and strategies, lifelong learning and leadership in education outside the classroom."The PAEMST is presented by the National Science Foundation. Up to 108 teachers are recognized each year."These teachers are incredible educators, role models and mentors to all those around them, and through mastery of their craft, they inspire students to study math, technology, engineering, and science -- including computer science," State Education Secretary Tony Thurmond said. An educator for 14 years, Pease teaches courses in Introduction to Coding; Gateway to Technology: Design and Modeling, Automation and Robotics; and Computer Science for Innovators and Makers. From 2014-16 she also mentored 16 high school girls from schools across the county to build a microlab experiment that was sent to the International Space Station to test zero gravity.Marlys Williamson, a fifth-grade teacher at Wolf Canyon Elementary in Chula Vista, was named a finalist in the science category. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A candidate for the County Board of Supervisors says he may open his own doors to the homeless.Attorney and North Park resident Omar Passons is now leaning towards renovating his detached garage and housing homeless.Passons first began mulling it over after reading a recent local opinion piece touting the idea of a so-called "foster care system" for the homeless, matching transients with willing homeowners.Passons says the foster homes would likely house those needing transitional housing - perhaps several weeks - with applicants screened by a city or county agency.He plans more research on the topic, but says the idea could fit as one part of a comprehensive plan to combat homelessness."Because of the housing shortage, this becomes - at least in a portion of the circumstances - a lower-cost alternative to standing up an 80-unit building.  I do think there is space for creative solutions, and I hope this starts to open people's minds to what is possible," said Passons.Passons posted his idea on the Nextdoor app, which drew a sharply divided reaction.  Among those voicing concerns is his neighbor Anastasia Colfer, who has frequently found transients sleeping in her yard."If the transients aren't screened properly, then we have got major problems," said Colfer.  1322

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - With regional intensive-care unit capacity still officially considered to be zero, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday the regional stay-at-home order imposed by the state for the entirety of Southern California will almost assuredly be extended beyond next week's expiration date."We are likely, I think it's pretty self-evident, going to need to extend those regional dates," Newsom said. "... Based upon all the data and based upon all these trend lines, it is very likely based on those current trends that we'll need to extend that stay at home order, (which) you recall was a three-week order when we announced it."The regional stay-at-home order for the 11-county Southern California region took effect at 11:59 p.m. Dec. 6, and was originally set to end on Dec. 28. Newsom did not give an indication of exactly when a decision on extending the order will be made, or much long the order will remain in place.The Southern California region covers Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, Imperial, Inyo, Mono, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. Only far northern California is not under a stay-at-home order.The order was triggered in each area when the region's ICU bed availability dropped below 15%. As of Monday, the Southern California and San Joaquin Valley regions both had an official ICU bed availability of 0%. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A car was found fully engulfed in flames on state Route 52 early Thursday morning, but authorities were unable to locate the driver.At around 4:20 a.m., California Highway Patrol officers were called to a vehicle fire on westbound SR-52, just east of Santo Road, in the Tierrasanta area.As flames raged, CHP officers broke a side window to check if anyone was inside, but no one was found.Firefighters were able to knock down the blaze in about 5 minutes.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 528

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two men were shot Saturday evening while standing on a sidewalk in the Mountain View area of San Diego.It happened about 6 p.m. in the 1000 block of South 45th Street, said San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.The two victims were standing on the sidewalk with others, Heims said. "A vehicle was eastbound on Newton Avenue when it stopped in the intersection and someone inside fired multiple rounds at the group."A 44-year-old man was shot in the head and paramedics took him to a hospital, the officer said. "At this time, his injuries are non-life-threatening."A 29-year-old man was shot in the right arm and driven to a hospital by an unknown person, Heims said. His wound was not believed life-threatening.The car involved in the shooting was described as an early model small, light-colored sedan. 830
