The shape of the Earth is a spheroid, right? A YouGov study conducted this year says a third of people ages 18-24 aren’t sure our planet is round."If you believe we live on a globe, I know you're deceived." Welcome to the Flat Earth International Conference. “NASA has obviously lied to us on numerous occasions,” says Wendell, a conference attendee. Most of the people gathered at the conference held in Denver, Colorado believe Americans live on a lie. The flat Earth believers think pictures of the earth are fake and astronauts are actors. Social media sites like YouTube have made the flat earth theory more available in recent years. Some of those accounts have tens of thousands of followers."If you do trust your senses, you're seeing things different than what you're being fed," says Debra Auden, who traveled from Texas to the conference.Dr. Ka Chun Yu, the curator of space science at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, says he was really surprised when he heard about the number of flat-earthers."We've known for over 2,000 years that the earth is more or less a sphere, a ball or a round shape."This is how the Greeks knew the earth was round. They realized that if you had sticks in the ground and you were able to measure their shadows on the same day, the lengths of the shadows would actually be different," Dr. Yu says. But to flat-earthers, science's facts are fiction. Flat Earth believers say an ice wall keeps us from falling off the surface. So, why do flat-earthers believe there would be such a lie about a round Earth? Some say conspiracy, while others turn to God. "You might not be convinced, but I encourage you to visit your local science museum or planetarium," Dr. Yu says. 1752

The Wisconsin State Patrol pulled a driver of a sedan on Sunday because officers deemed the car was not safely transporting a snowmobile that the driver had tied to the top.The driver was on US 63 in Polk County when police flagged them down. The state trooper managed to get a photo of the vehicle. That photo was shared with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT), who then shared it on their Facebook page."Don't try this at home," the DOT said in the post. 477
The restaurant industry has been reshaped in the past six months. We’ve seen more pivots to take-out and outdoor dining, but could we see a more drastic shift.New data from Bank of America shows sales at independent chains are still down about 15%."Right now, it is just sad. People are exhausting their personal savings. They are shutting their businesses and they just don’t know what to do,” said Andrew Rigie.Rigie is with the New York City Hospitality Alliance. In NYC alone, at least 1,289 restaurants have closed since March, according to the Office of New York Comptroller. Across the country, Yelp has gathered data from its platform that show that number is around 16,000.“It’s a really dire situation,” added Rigie. The situation is the direst for independent restaurants, because the same Bank of America study that showed sales still down 15% at mom and pop restaurants, shows chain restaurant sales are now up 2% higher than they were pre-pandemic.Industry experts believe a continuing trend of these numbers could reshape the industry.Chains restaurants are now in a better position to replace space occupied by folded restaurants or struggling ones, potentially shifting the flavor of the restaurant industry toward chain food.“I’m not knocking or saying there is anything bad about a chain, but we really want our beloved mom and pop businesses,” said Rigie. "We really need support from the federal, state and local governments to ensure these places are able to recover.”Legislation was presented to Congress in June, the Restaurants Act, to help struggling independent restaurants with grant money. However, there has been no vote on the bill or any signs it could pass.Without additional help, the latest estimate by the Independent Restaurant Coalition is that upwards of 85% of independent restaurants could fold by the end of the pandemic. 1870
