SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dozens of officers in San Diego County have been convicted of crimes and some are still on the job. That's according to a new investigation by several newsrooms across the state, including the Voice of San Diego.A few examples of convicted cops include the case of former SDPD Sergeant Oscar Armenta who pleaded guilty to attacking his girlfriend but didn’t get any jail time. Former SDPD Officer Anthony Arevalos was convicted of groping women and trying to elicit sexual favors during traffic stops. Married ex-SDPD Officers Bryce and Jennifer Charpentier admitted to stealing and taking prescription drugs while on the clock. Other officers like Karen Almos and Jeffrey Blackford got DUIs and are reportedly still working for SDPD, according to a massive new database of convicted law enforcement officers.Complete Coverage: The Transparency ProjectThe database is a collaborative project from several news organizations including the Voice of San Diego, which was coordinated by the Investigative Reporting Program at UC Berkeley and the Bay Area News Group. The project was born after an open-records request last year shed light on a list that came from the California Commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training which revealed close to 12,000 state officers and applicants who’ve been found guilty of various offenses. According to the database, of the more than two dozen convicted San Diego County officers, the majority, 17, were from San Diego Police Department. There were six officers from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, two from Chula Vista Police Department, one from Oceanside Police Department, one from Carlsbad Police Department and one from San Diego City Schools Police.Monday, an SDPD spokesperson confirmed with 10News that he told the Voice of San Diego, in part, "Cops make mistakes like everyone else and local jurisdictions should be able to determine for themselves whether that person is worthy of continuing to carry a badge." 2003

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — From California to Maine, breweries across the country are stepping up to help California fire victims.The effort started with the Sierra Nevada brewery. While their facility was spared by the Camp Fire, communities around it were devastated.Sierra Nevada founder Ken Grossman reached out to fellow brewers to join him in the disaster relief effort, making their ‘Resilience Butte County Proud IPA’ recipe available to those who want to help. The brewery is asking that 100 percent of profits go to fire relief efforts. So far over 1,200 breweries have pledged to make and sell the beer.“I’ve never seen anything on this scale,” said Jim Millea, brewmaster at OB Brewery. “That’s a lot of beer being made for a good cause, it’s pretty sweet!”Millea says he didn’t hesitate to join the effort.“Who wouldn’t want to be a part of a good cause?” said Millea. He’s one of many in the San Diego region who will be brewing Resilience IPA. Millea hopes to have his on tap at the OB Brewery in a few weeks. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Deputies credited hikers for calling 911, saving a man who had fallen through the ice at Big Laguna Lake Sunday morning. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department received a call around 11:45 about a man who trapped in the lake after falling through ice. According to the department, the man, who is in his 60s, tried to ski on the ice, but fell in because the ice was too thin. A helicopter was able to quickly descend on the lake, lowering a flotation device down to the man. “He knew he didn’t have much more in him. He knew he had to get out of that water. He didn’t have much time,” Deputy Bill Liniewicz said. RELATED: Man dies on Lincoln Park sidewalk, police sayCal Fire and San Diego Sheriff’s Department all worked together on the rescue. Video from the scene shows a helicopter lowering a rescue device down to the man trapped in the water. Cal Fire took to social media following the incident to warn of the dangers near bodies of water as people swarm to see the recent snow that fell on the San Diego County mountains. “If visiting the snow please remember to stay away from all bodies of water and stay on designated trails,” the agency said. 1186

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Funerals will be held next Thursday for two teenagers killed when they mistakenly jumped off a freeway bridge on SR-56 after a crash. 18-year-old Ruben Ortiz Jr. and 17-year-old Jesse Garcia of Escondido were in a 2012 Nissan Altima that went out of control and crashed in Carmel Valley Tuesday night. The teens and four other people got out of the car and ran across eastbound lanes of the freeway. Ortiz and Garcia jumped over the railing, not realizing it was an 80-foot drop into Gonzales Creek. Two girls who had been in the vehicle, 14 and 15 years old, suffered severe injuries and remain in the hospital. “It sat at me and hit me and our community.
