(KGTV) - For the second time this year, Carlsbad-based airline, Cal Jet, has abruptly canceled all scheduled flights and stopped booking new flights indefinitely. Kelly Skemps was scheduled to fly from McClellan-Palomar airport to Las Vegas on Friday for her brother’s 50th birthday. But Thursday morning she got a call and a text alerting her that her flight had been canceled.“I was shocked,” said Skemps, who admits she was initially excited for the airline to be open.“I thought it was going to be perfect,” she said.Cal Jet bills itself as an easy and competitively-priced flight option from North County to Las Vegas.But this is the second time the small airline has inconvenienced customers by cancelling flights and blocking out their schedule.In February, Cal Jet went dark for nearly two weeks. President George Wozniak said the company they lease the plane from, Elite Air, needed it to fly NCAA basketball players.When they finally resumed operations in March, Wozniak told 10News, “we feel very confident going forward that we have the extra crew and airplanes necessary to fulfill that travel mission for these people.”Cal Jet did not respond to a request for comment after the latest round of cancellations, though a customer service representative attributed the problems to a lack of “aircraft and crew availability.”In an email to customers sent late Thursday, Cal Jet attributed the temporary closure to their efforts to expand to other cities. 1498

CEO Win Cramer said they have lived the American Dream, saying they're a scrappy business always fighting to get on top."We worked out of literally, a house, or a rundown office or an apartment building forever," he said. JLab competes against major brands like Bose and Beats.They found a niche and made a name for themselves, "We came out with some fun colorful designs that happened to be on trend."Cramer said innovation is their secret weapon."It gives you the option to really tune out on a plane, you push a button and the engine noise goes away," explaining one of their earbuds.Their newest challenge is Trump's trade war. Billions of dollars in tariffs imposed on China are going into effect, and while all of the design work is done in Carlsbad, 100% of JLab's product is shipped from China.Cramer was sitting on a plane when he saw the alert, "this news pops up on my phone that 0 billion in tariffs announced, I quickly perused the list and saw our tariff code that we import  80% of our products was on the list and I just had this feeling of oh gosh we're going to have to fight this battle that we don't know how to fight."He is bending every ear within reach to spread awareness of how this affects JLab and other American businesses and even went to Washington DC to plead his case.Cramer said no legislators were there, just staffers and no electronic devices were allowed into the room. He said there is a written record of what was said."It was the largest hearing in US history which in it of itself should tell you something and how folks are, at least businesses like us are taking this pretty serious," he said.Production costs could increase by 25% and with the holiday season upon us, he's running out of options, "layoffs or pay cuts being the last option, certainly not something that I want to do or think about or consider, but it's something we're being forced to consider."He hopes change is swift and those in power hear his plea.He said the company will find out in mid-September how big the changes will be, and will see impacts as early as October. CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The U.S. government will pay Moderna Inc. up to .525 billion to secure 100 million doses of the company’s COVID-19 vaccine candidate.The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Department of Defense (DoD) made the announcement Tuesday.HHS says Moderna will manufacture the vaccine doses while clinical trials are still underway to expedite the traditional development timeline and get vaccines to the public as soon as possible.The Trump administration hopes to deliver the vaccines by the end of the year, so long as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorizes their use.“In creating a vaccine portfolio for Operation Warp Speed, the Trump Administration is increasing the likelihood that the United States will have at least one safe, effective vaccine by 2021,” said HHS Secretary Alex Azar. “Today’s investment represents the next step in supporting this vaccine candidate all the way from early development by Moderna and the National Institutes of Health, through clinical trials, and now large-scale manufacturing, with the potential to bring hundreds of millions of safe and effective doses to the American people.”HHS says the vaccine doses will be delivered to government-designated locations across the country and the U.S. could acquire up to an additional 400 million doses of the vaccine.If viable, the vaccines would be available to the American people at no cost, according to HHS. Healthcare professionals could charge for the cost of administering the vaccine, though.The vaccine, called mRNA-1273, has been co-developed by Moderna and scientists from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health. CALEXICO (CNS) - The federal government today broke ground on the first border wall replacement project awarded under President Donald Trump.Customs and Border Protection is replacing a 2.25-mile section of border fencing constructed in the 1990s using scrap metal with a 30-foot-high bollard-style wall just south of downtown Calexico. The project covers an area west of the Calexico West Port of Entry, according to the agency.This project ``is one of Border Patrol's highest priority projects,'' according to a CBP statement ``Although the existing wall has proven effective at deterring unlawful cross-border activity, smuggling organizations damaged and breached this outdated version of a border wall several hundred times during the last two years, resulting in costly repairs.'' 794

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - California Pacific Airlines has canceled all of its January flights in and out of Carlsbad’s Palomar-McClellan Airport. The announcement came after the small airline had already canceled flights from December 21 through the end of the year. CPA launched in November with direct flights to Reno, Las Vegas, San Jose and Pheonix. It had been almost a decade in the making for founder Ted Vallas, who finally opened CPA after taking over a small airline with a fleet of four aging jets. But by December, the problems began. Two of the planes were taken out for repairs, creating several days of canceled flights. Operations resumed for about a week, but a few days before Christmas the cancellations began again causing passengers to scramble to find alternate routes. On Yelp, one reviewer wrote “They canceled my flight last night, and rebooked me to this morning. Then they canceled my flight this morning... on Christmas Eve!! Had to ditch this airline completely and booked a last minute Southwest flight.” Founder Ted Vallas told 10News that all canceled flights will be refunded. He said maintenance issues were still a lingering problem, but they ran into another issue as the holidays approached - a lack of pilots. Vallas said they recently let two of their pilots go. That coincided with two other crews leaving for higher paying seasonal jobs at major airlines. Without enough planes or pilots for all of their scheduled flights, they decided to cancel them across the board at Palomar-McClellan. Vallas told 10News, “Being a scheduled airline and dedicated to this community the North County, it would be better to notify people in advance that we have this pilot problem.” He said they are currently training more pilots and in the process of leasing new planes, but those won’t be available until at least February. Vallas says another one of their planes will be heading in for maintenance during their 30-day shutdown. Palomar-McClellan airport has had a history of failed airline ventures. The most recent was Cal Jet, which folded after less than a year of operations. But big changes are coming. Back in October, the county Board of Supervisors approved a plan to extend the runway, which could help make a business model for an airline more viable. For now, CPA continues to operate out of several other airports. Vallas vows to resume operations out of Carlsbad as soon as possible, but has not yet set a hard date. 2469
