SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Living in San Diego is already expensive, and paying for satellite or cable TV can make it even more costly. Now, a growing number of residents are saying goodbye to cable and satellite, and subscribing to more affordable streaming services. "Really for us, I just felt guilty flipping through those channels all the time because I knew we're paying for them, but at the same time if it's not Game of Thrones we're not really watching anyway," said Jason Stump, who got rid of cable about four weeks ago. Stump, who lives in La Mesa, kept his cable for years because he feared not being able to watch live sports. But everything changed when he discovered that YouTube TV offered Fox Sports San Diego, which carries the Padres, four versions of ESPN, and the local channels. The price tag? a month, down from the 0 he was paying monthly for cable. Stump isn't alone when it comes to so-called cutting the cord. There are plenty of streaming devices around, including Roku, Apple, Amazon Fire, and Android TV. They connect you to many popular streaming services.Plus, people can get local channels free over the air by buying an antenna, which can go for less than . Jim Willcox, senior electronics editor at Consumer Reports, says often times the signal over-the-air is better because it's not compressed by cable company transmission. Instead, people can buy antennas to get over-the-air HD, which is free and can have a better signal. San Diego's COX Cable offers a Contour streaming service for subscribers. "We work hard to make sure customers are paired with the services that they want and need," the company said in a statement. "With other services, you may need multiple subscriptions, additional hardware, inputs and passwords which are often inconvenient and provide less programming choices at potentially the same or increased cost, depending on how many subscription services you need to get all the content you want."Still, there are drawbacks to cutting the cord. Willcox said cable is convenient and reliable. For instance, streaming services can lag or crash during highly watched events like the Super Bowl or a Game of Thrones premier. "You might get one of the cable cutting services a month, but you want to add HBO, and that's a month," he said. This fall, however, he'll have to make a choice. He wants NFL Network, but unlike his former cable service, YouTube TV doesn't provide it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Lime is rolling its dockless scooters and bikes out of San Diego, a month after a hearing officer ruled the company could keep its operating permit.Lime announced Thursday they would not be renewing their permit to operate in San Diego but would monitor the opportunity to return in the future.“As part of our path to profitability, Lime has made the difficult decision to exit San Diego and focus our resources on markets that allow us to meet our ambitious goals for 2020," a statement from Lime said. "We’re grateful to our team members, riders, Juicers and communities who supported us throughout this journey. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Law enforcement agencies across San Diego Country will have extra officers stationed near busy railroad intersections this week as part of "Operation Clear Track. "The week-long enforcement ties into National Rail Safety Week, from Sept. 22-28.In Carlsbad, officers will be near Carlsbad Village Drive and Grand Avenue during the lunch hour, reminding people to only cross when there are no trains nearby."The goal is to raise railroad safety awareness through education and the enforcement of state railroad grade crossing and trespassing laws," the Carlsbad Police Department said in a statement.Amtrak officers will also keep an eye on well-known trouble spots along the coast, like a stretch in Del Mar where surfers and hikers frequently cross over tracks to get to the beach."It's not safe to cross here," said surfer Cooper Baker, who admitted he does it regularly. "But, if people have their wits about them and make good choices about where they're stepping, it's totally safe. So I just try to make sure I know a train is not going to be here and that my footing is sure. I think it's fine."A recent study found San Diego is the 9th deadliest county for accidental train casualties in the U.S. from 2013-2017. In that time, 44 people were killed while trying to cross tracks. Los Angeles County topped the list, with 110 deaths in that time."It's definitely good to give people a reminder that trains are coming through," said surfer Shayne Jensen. "You gotta be safe."In the last year, the North County Transit District has taken steps to make trains safer. In 2018, they equipped all of their trains with Positive Train Control, a new technology that automatically slows trains down if any danger is detected.Meanwhile, there have been calls in Del Mar for more railroad crossings to be built. Residents are asking for more options, so they're not tempted to cross illegally.
