GRAND COUNTY, Colo. — In the span of just over 12 hours, a wildfire burning west of Denver grew in size sixfold, reaching nearly 200,000 acres and forcing evacuations in Grand County and the total closure of Rocky Mountain National Park.Between Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon, the East Troublesome fire exploded from a size of 19,086 to about 170,000 acres — making it the second-largest wildifre in state history. The top four largest wildfires in state history have all occurred this year."We planned for the worst," Grand County Sheriff Brett Schroetlin said Thursday. "This is the worst of the worst of the worst."Much of the fire growth is due to the weather, terrain and beetle-kill lodgepole pine, according to the incident management team. An incident commander for the fire said Thursday morning that the fire expanded 20 miles north of Granby and Grant Lake into Rocky Mountain National Park.A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 6 p.m., and winds are expected make the fire extremely active Thursday, according to the incident management team.Just before 9 a.m. Thursday, a spokesperson from Rocky Mountain National Park announced the entire park had closed to visitors due to the fires west of the Continental Divide. Air quality is hazardous within the park.The entire town of Grand Lake was evacuated Wednesday, along with all residents north, west and along Highway 34. Evacuees were told to go south on Highway 34, if possible.Around 1 a.m. on Thursday in a Facebook video, Schroetlin explained just how difficult the day had been."I have a message," he said. "I'm not even sure what those words are. Today (Wednesday) has been an extremely, extremely challenging day for our community. We knew this fire was here. We knew the impacts of it. We looked at every possible potential for this fire. We never, ever expected 6,000 acres per hour to come upon our community."He said the winds were strong and as a result, the fire's behavior was strong. They've never experienced challenges like Wednesday, he said. However, the community stepped up."As we drive around this northern part of Grand County, I don't know what we'll see in the morning, to be honest," he said. "But you know what? Together, as a community, we're going to get through this."Schroetlin said authorities made "some incredible rescues" on Wednesday, including an incident where deputies were able to rescue four loggers whose vehicle had caught fire on a county road.High winds followed by a cold front are expected Thursday. Health officials nationwide – and in the Kansas City metro – are warning about heart condition in recovering COVID-19 patients that could have more of an effect on athletes.Myocarditis, which inflames the heart muscle, is being called the "breaking news" of coronavirus."[Myocarditis] can lead to a thinning and distension of the heart and a lack of function in the heart," said Dr. Steve Stites, chief medical officer at the University of Kansas Health System, "And even to heart failure and the need for a heart transplant and bad heart rhythms that can lead to death."The condition could be exacerbated by the type of exercise athletes are used to."In college athletics, we don't know the outcome of myocarditis," Stites said. "We don't know that a high impact sport could worsen the damage to the heart. We don't know what high-intensity exercise might be doing to a heart that's already slightly inflamed. All of those are leading to questions about the safety of returning to high-performance sports."The hospital and health professionals around the U.S. are screening athletes to better understand how myocarditis affects the organs."Our fear is that we could be missing a lot of diseases that we can't see and we can't test for," Stites said, "and that can include very small blood vessel clots inside the heart that lead to more heart damage."Doctors at KU plan to make an assessment of how this will affect college and high school sports in the coming weeks.A study in Germany that looked at 100 patients recovering from COVID-19 found that 60% of them had myocarditis independent of preexisting conditions.Doctors at KU said the condition hasn't been studied as much in the U.SThis story was originally reported by Sarah Plake at KSHB. 1754

Heather Locklear has pleaded not guilty to charges related to an alleged domestic dispute, according to the Ventura County, California, district attorney's office.The actress was not in court Thursday for the plea, which her attorney entered on her behalf.Locklear is charged with five misdemeanor counts: four counts of battery on a peace officer and one count of resisting, obstructing or delaying a peace officer.Police were called to Locklear's home in Thousand Oaks, California, in February regarding a domestic incident between the actress and her boyfriend.Authorities declined to identify Locklear's boyfriend.The former "Melrose Place" star, 56, was taken into custody. Ventura County sheriff's deputies said at the time that Locklear was "extremely uncooperative and physically combative."Locklear was released on ,000 bail.The actress has not commented on the incident.A pretrial conference is set for June 7.  937

It's science.The unlucky human sacrifice here is Isaac Couling, a member of the Concord High School golf team. According to Blissfield Golf Coach Steve Babbitt, Couling, 16, was competing in the Madison Tournament at the World Creek Golf Course in Adrian, Michigan, when terror rained down."The group just finished teeing off on hole #7 and were walking down the fairway," Babbitt told CNN in an email. "They were aware of a goose nest on their left which they were looking at but not bothering when from behind them and to the right came the guard goose (protecting the nest)."Then came a rather alarming escalation, a whole Shakespearean tragedy in three acts.
