FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) — Bar patrons foiled a robbery Saturday by rushing the accused gunman and holding him until deputies arrived.Patrons at the Red Eye Saloon at 1448 South Mission Rd. in Fallbrook were in the bar's parking lot around 2 a.m. when a man pulled a gun on them and demanded their wallets and cell phones, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Fidel Moreno, fired one shot in the air, witnesses told deputies.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodFearing for their safety, the group rushed Moreno and tackled him, according to deputies, and held him down until deputies got there.A 9mm pistol loaded with a 16 round magazine, with one casing missing, were found at the scene, deputies said. A spent shell casing was located near where Moreno was being held down.Deputies said Moreno was also in possession of two loaded 10 round magazines.Moreno was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, negligent discharge of a firearm, and other firearm charges.He's scheduled to appear in court Aug. 21 and is being held on 0,000 bail. 1142
ENCINITAS, Calif., (KGTV) -- Friends and family celebrated the survival of 14-year-old Keane Webre-Hayes at a community paddle-out event. The teenager was attacked by a great white shark at Beacon's Beach one year ago this month. The line between life and death is so thin for Keane."People come up to me and say, 'hey what's that from'?" Keane said as he pointed at the large scars on this left cheek, ear, and neck. Last September, the then 13-year-old was bitten by a great white shark while lobster diving at Beacon's Beach. "I swam 70 yards to a kayak with basically no arm," Keane said. He screamed for help toward a few kayakers in the distance. That is when he met Matthew Ephron, who helped him get to shore. "He did most of the work, and we just got him in so that he wouldn't be out there forever," Ephron said. Doctors said Keane lost half of the blood in his body. But 1,000 stitches later, the boy survived. And for the last year, doctors, trainers, therapists, and teachers helped Keane find his new normal."We honestly couldn't have gone through it without the support of the community," Keane's mother, Ellie Hayes, said. "The hugs, the love, the gifts, the support."So to say thank you, Keane's family hosted a paddle-out at Moon Light State Beach to honor his survival. "Without them, I would not be able to move my arm," Keane said. "I probably would not be who I am today without them."Keane has made incredible strides. From being bedridden for weeks, he now plays in a club beach volleyball team. Family and friends said Saturday's paddle-out is a celebration of life and proof of Keane's incredible resilience. "I definitely want people to know that I can do things, and also if I can do that, you can do that if you put your mind to it," Keane said. FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) -- A tortoise is recovering after falling 10 feet from a wall Sunday, cracking its shell.The tortoise was found by a good Samaritan after falling from a 10-foot wall while being chased by a dog, according to the County News Center.The 70-pound tortoise was taken to a veterinary hospital where animal services were called.Officials say that’s when they learned it would cost several thousand dollars to fix the 35 to 40-year-old tortoise.“We have a donor-driven Spirit fund that we can use for severe medical cases such as this one,” said County Animal Services Director Dan DeSousa. “This tortoise will get the extensive, aggressive care and long-term observation that he needs to regain his health and hopefully live to a great, old age.”The tortoise underwent surgery Tuesday, where veterinarians put screws into the shell then used ties on the screws to hold the broken pieces together.Veterinarians then used the same paste material that dentures are made from to seal the cracks.For more information or to donate to the Spirit fund, click here. 1098

(KGTV) - California's nearly 3-year-old ban on single-use plastic bags may be having an unintended impact: a spike in shoplifting.In late June at Major Market in Escondido - just before closing time - two women are recorded sauntering down the liquor aisle, before they begin stuffing their bags. "They're putting in our high-end champagne. About a bottle," said night manager John Kuper.By the time they're done, they collect seven bottles of champagne and one bottle of vodka."They didn't establish eye contact when I said goodbye to them. Their purses looked awfully full," said Kuper.Kuper says when he later looked at the video, he saw them walk out without paying. "Makes me sick to my stomach. That's your profit coming out of the registers there ... We believe the same women may have come in a month before and stolen champagne," says Kuper.Kuper's market is not the only one feeling the pain, as these scenes become more and more common. The Neighborhood Market Association estimates shoplifting losses at local groceries has climbed from 25% to 30% since the ban became law in 2016. Kuper says with so many customers now bringing in their own bags, spotting shoplifters is a big challenge."If they walk out with their own bags, we can't check every bag," said Kuper.Hiring extra security at the door is pricey and risks alienating customers. Facebook users in the United States who want to run certain ads on the platform will need to hand over the last four digits of their social security number and a picture of a government-issued ID.The social network now requires anyone who wants to run ads related to political campaigns, civil rights, immigration, guns, economy, and other issues, to prove they're in the United States. Part of the proof required is the last four digits of your Social Security number.The move is part of a series of initiatives by Facebook to increase transparency on the platform after a Russian government-linked troll group spent thousands of rubles?on Facebook ads targeting Americsans ahead of the 2016 presidential election.In addition to a Social Security number, users wishing to buy ads will need to provide a picture of a government-issued ID and a US mailing address. Once Facebook verifies the information submitted, the company will mail a code to the provided address to authorize the user's Facebook account to buy ads.Facebook declined to share what services it uses to verify Social Security numbers and other personal details. As recently as last month,Facebook said ads would also include the tag "Political Ad." Any ad mentioning a candidate will be subject to the new rules.In April, Facebook released a list of 20 "issues" -- including as abortion, education, guns, health, immigration, military and terrorism -- that apply to the new approval process.The last issue on Facebook's list is "values," which the company considers "issues that discuss the values used in determining societal standards, such as patriotism."The new rules mean many marketing campaigns will be subject to the new guidelines.
