WELLINGTON, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand's geothermal scientists will be collaborating with the world's leading geothermal researchers after the country joins an elite international group next month.New Zealand would be admitted to the International Partnership for Geothermal Technology (IPGT) in Melbourne, Australia, on Nov. 16, Science and Innovation Minister Wayne Mapp announced Wednesday."Geothermal energy is one of our most important renewable energy resources with huge potential for growth," said Mapp."This recognition of our geothermal research programs will allow our scientists to collaborate with an elite group of researchers in the United States, Australia, Switzerland and Iceland."Scientists from New Zealand research organizations were committed to finding new ways to harness the country's extensive geothermal fields, said Mapp."Innovation and clean energy is a big part of enabling New Zealand to grow the economy," said Mapp."This new international partnership will help keep us at the forefront of technology developments such as enhanced geothermal systems."Established in 2008, the IPGT seeks to develop advanced, cost- effective geothermal energy technologies through international research co-operation.New Zealand's geothermal electricity generation rose by 21 percent last year and accounted for 13 percent of total electricity generation, its highest recorded level.The government is aiming to expand geothermal energy with three large geothermal projects in the pipeline by 2020.The country's biggest geothermal project is to be Contact Energy's 250-megawatt Tauhara II geothermal project.The project, being developed northeast of the central North Island town of Taupo, is expected to produce enough electricity to meet the needs of around 270,000 homes when it becomes fully operational in 2015.

BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- In response to public suspicion stoked by recent dumpling contamination scandals, China's Ministry of Health on Thursday said the new food safety standard for flash-frozen dumplings did not show signs of leniency.The Ministry introduced the new food safety standard on flash-frozen dough or rice products on Thursday.The Ministry has been accused of loosening scrutiny over a disease-generating bacteria in such foods, staphylococcus aureus, or golden staph, which can cause various diseases, including pneumonia and sepsis, and is sometimes life-threatening.The controversy became particularly relevant after several major brands of frozen dumplings have been successively recalled in recent months.In October, a Henan-based company, Zhengzhou Sinian Food Co., Ltd, confirmed the contamination of golden staph in its flash-frozen seafood- and pork-stuffed dumplings.Frozen dumplings made by Hong Kong-based manufacturer Wanchai Ferry were found to contain golden staph in November, and some of its products have been pulled from shelves.The previous standard provided that no golden staph should be tested in such food, while the new one gives a quantitative restriction that the volume of the bacteria should be no more than ten to the fourth degree.Liu Xiumei, a food safety expert with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said at the press conference held by the health ministry that such bacteria becomes inactivate after the food is boiled for a few seconds, and it takes a volume of ten to the fifth degree to generate toxicity.The previous standard could only serve as a general provision due to the lack of quantitative microbiological testing back when it was introduced, Liu said, stressing that the new standard is not a sign that the Ministry has gone soft on bacterial contamination of relevant foods.The new standard will come into effect starting Dec. 21, 2011.

BEIJING, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao will meet with his U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama, at the 19th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Informal Leadership Meeting, said China's Assistant Foreign Minister, Wu Hailong, on Monday.He said the APEC summit will be held from Nov. 12 to 13 in Hawaii, with the theme of "seamless regional economy."According to Wu, speaking at a Foreign Ministry media briefing, Hu will attend the "APEC Leaders' Informal Meeting, Leaders' Dialogue with Representatives from APEC Business Advisory Council, and APEC CEO Summit."China hopes the APEC members will implement the economic growth strategy agreed last year, striving to achieve a balanced, inclusive, sustainable, innovative and safe economic growth, said Wu.China expects the APEC members to comprehensively promote regional trade and investment liberalization, he said, adding that all member states should fulfill their commitments and oppose all forms of trade protectionism.Wu said APEC should strengthen economic and technical cooperation to enhance the development ability of the developing members, and therefore to achieve common prosperity."APEC members generally hold positive attitudes toward U.S. proposals in various fields such as green growth, innovation policy.
