SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sheriff's Department released several videos of a deadly shooting that occurred after a pursuit ended in Chula Vista.The shooting took place after a pursuit that started in Orange County around midnight on Oct. 4. The suspect of the chase, identified as Christopher Ulmer, 33, of Whitter, Calif., led officers to Chula Vista, where authorities stopped his vehicle using a pit maneuver on I-805 south near Orange Avenue at about 1 a.m.Police say Ulmer exited his vehicle and pointed his arm at officers who believed he was holding a firearm, prompting officers to fire their service weapons. Officers say Ulmer got back up and pointed at officers again, prompting a second round of gunfire.RELATED: Pursuit suspect shot by law enforcement on I-805 in Chula Vista identifiedUlmer was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, where he was pronounced dead.Video released by the Sheriff's Department showed a photo of a black, cylindrical object found underneath Ulmer's body that authorities believed to have been a gun before they fired their weapons.The CHP officers involved in the shooting were identified as Sergeant John Holm who has been employed for 22 years, Officer Pakko Mendez who has been employed for 11 years, officer Javier Mendoza who has been employed for seven years, and officer Lauren Chi who has been employed for three years.RELATED: Authorities identify officers involved in deadly South Bay shootingThe San Diego Police officers involved in the shooting were identified as Sergeant Michael Pidgeon who has been employed for 26 years, and officer Patrick Harvey who has been employed for seven years. Both officers are on administrative leave per the department's policy.Once the Sheriff's Department completes their investigation, it will be turned over to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office to determine if any officers bear criminal liability.The FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office of Southern District of California will monitor the investigation. 2022

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The owners of a Webster-area restaurant that has been broken into in recent days decided to set up their own overnight sting operation, and their plan led to two arrests.At around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, the owners of Trevi Ristorante on 4703 Federal Blvd., put together their own stakeout and waited for anyone who would try to break into the business.The restaurant had been burglarized three times in the past week, including one incident in which a safe was taken. Jonathan Romero, the owners’s son, told ABC 10News, “We’re tired of it.”While the owner remained on the roof, his son waited across the street and a family friend watched from behind the eatery.After several hours, they noticed an SUV park in an alley behind the restaurant and two men get out of the vehicle.As the family observed the two people go through gates to the restaurant’s back doors, the owner’s son called 911.San Diego police officers arrived at the scene and took one of the would-be burglars into custody.However, the other man climbed up the side of the building and ran across the roof. After jumping from the roof down to the front parking lot, the man ran away as officers pursued him.The man was able to cross Federal Boulevard, but officers deployed a stun gun and subdued him.The stunned man was treated at the scene for his injuries and is expected to be OK. 1373

Aviara Oaks Elementary School in Carlsbad, Del Mar Hills Academy in Del Mar and Torrey Pines Elementary School in San Diego were all honored with the award. “Congratulations to these schools that have tremendous programs dedicated to, and invested in, creating state-of-the-art learning and teaching environments,” State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond said. “This recognition is well-deserved, and special thanks go to the educators and the school communities that meet students’ unique needs in order for all of their students to reach their full potential.”Schools are recognized based on school-wide student scores, subgroup student scores and graduation rates. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Salk Institute's cutting-edge research to reverse climate change is getting noticed and supported in a big way.Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos donated million through the Bezos Earth Fund last week, a huge boost after Sempra Energy jump-started the project with million Nov. 9.Salk's Harnessing Plants Initiative adapts crops we eat, grown around the world, to extract more carbon dioxide out of the air and hold it in their roots."It’s really great waking up every day and knowing that you can work on a problem that is so urgent and is the most existential problem in this world and I’ve been worried about this since I was in middle school," co-director of HPI Wolfgang Busch said.Busch said they came up with the project while brainstorming what positive impact on the world could they make with plants.He said they're focused on six crops including, corn, soybean, canola, wheat and rice.Busch said they are in the research phase and see two paths to achieving their goal, genetically modify seeds in the lab or specialized breeding between plants to get the traits they are looking for.These crops are already being grown around the world."If you take together the area that they are planted, it’s larger than the subcontinent of India," Busch said, a huge untapped potential.Busch said of the world's emissions each year, "it could be possible that 30% of this could be drawn down by these plants if it is widely adopted."Busch said we could get the modified plants in the ground and start seeing the effects in the next 10-15 years."I think I am very fortunate to work on this problem, I am really thrilled to do the work, to make an impact," Busch said. 1690
