SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than 200 people in San Diego County are currently being monitored over novel coronavirus concerns, county health officials said Friday. The 204 people under county supervision include those deemed at risk of having been exposed to the virus due to close contact with confirmed cases or because of travel to China in the past 14 days, the county said. Those individuals are monitoring their health under the supervision of county health officials.RELATED: San Diego Board of Supervisors extends coronavirus emergenciesSo far, 338 people in all have been monitored by the county, with 134 people completing their time under supervision.Health officials say the CDC is conducting screening for those landing at one of 11 U.S. airports from China. From there, if a patient shows no symptoms they are self-quarantined at home for self-monitoring with public health supervision. San Diego has had two confirmed cases of coronavirus, or COVID-19. One patient has since recovered from the virus and been released. The second patient was still receiving care. A third patient under investigation is still awaiting test results.RELATED: Mislabeled sample led to release of San Diego coronavirus patientThursday, the county Board of Supervisors voted to extend local and public health emergencies in response to their response to the illness. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — New data released by the San Diego County Office of Education show three-fourths of all K-12 students in the County are now studying online and experts believe that number will increase by the start of the new year.Poway parent, Caroline Epps, told her three children recently that they would be going back to virtual learning."I could tell they were disappointed," Epps said. "It's been nice having them there even though it's been such a short time. It's going to be a little difficult having them at home the whole day again."Poway Unified is one of the few school districts that are still offering modified in-person instruction, only to elementary students. But earlier this week, the district announced they would be recommending all students to revert to distance learning after winter break."My oldest will have the most difficult time with that because her assignments are more complex," Epps said. The decision comes after another surge in COVID-19 cases. Bob Mueller with the County Office of Education says 75% of K-12 students are now learning remotely, up from 68% last month."We are seeing the impact of gatherings for Thanksgiving," Mueller said. "It's likely that we will see the surge deepen for a time as we feel the impact of gatherings for the December holidays."School staff getting sick or having to quarantine are resulting in a serious staffing shortage."We are seeing unprecedented demand for substitutes," Mueller said. We need more people to work in those roles than we've ever needed before."Epps says while it is not ideal, she understands the situation. So she and her children will have to adapt and overcome."I don't think anyone wants the school year to be the way it has been," Epps said. "I feel like we have to take it with a grain of salt and just not get too worked up and not too stressed out about it."Poway Unified School District plans to return to on-campus learning by January 19, 2021. 1957

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One of San Diego's most famous malls is poised for a multi-million dollar renovation. On Wednesday, Fashion Valley will announce a project to add what it describes as inviting public spaces, enriched landscaping, broader dining and gathering places, tranquil outdoor lounges and water features, and increased personal shopping and valet services. It's the mall's biggest project since it added a second story in the mid-1990s. Vicki Hanor, a senior vice president with Simon Malls, said in a statement Fashion Valley is home to more than 50 retailers exclusive to San Diego, and prides itself on providing the ultimate shopping and dining experience. RELATED: Woman carjacked in parking lot of Fashion Valley Mall, threatened with knife"The proposed updates only seek to further enhance the overall guest experience and better reflect the San Diego lifestyle we all enjoy," Hanor said. Fashion Valley's project is the latest major facelift of a mall in San Diego.Westfield UTC recently added a new wing, plus an apartment tower. In Del Mar Heights, the new One Paseo just leased its entire retail wing. And in downtown, Horton Plaza will be transformed into a tech hub. Reg Kobzi, a senior vice president at commercial real-estate firm CBRE, said Fashion Valley remains one of San Diego's most successful malls, even drawing shoppers from Mexico. Still, he said it has to invest to retain that status. RELATED: Tommy Bahama bar and eatery, store coming to Fashion Valley Mall"It's a tough world out in the retail world, and so if you're competing for tenants, they want to be on par or be above them," Kobzi said.Kozbi said malls are trying to keep customers at the mall longer with more things to do. The longer they stay, the more money they are likely to spend, he said. Construction could start as early as Wednesday and will be complete by 2021. The mall says all shops will remain open during regular hours, and that parking will remain free. 1977
