SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Hoover High School Friday celebrated the topping off of one of its newest additions to campus.The campus set the final beam of its new 500-seat theater into place, with students and staff signing the steel beam before a crane lifted it into place. The event marked the latest completion in the school's massive renovation project, which has already seen the return of the school's once iconic tower. The tower, which was topped off in January 2019, could once be seen from El Cajon Blvd., before it was taken down in 1976 due to seismic safety standards.Once the renovations are completed, Hoover High will have not only its Spanish-style tower back but also a new theater with theater support and instructional space, and a three-story building accommodating counselors, support staff, and students.The new classroom building will feature 20 classrooms to replace outdated modular classrooms elsewhere on campus.The project will also see a reconfiguration of the main parking lot, courtyard improvements, and a student drop-off area. 1062

Zillow says the median home in San Diego is now worth 1,000. In the US, the median home is worth 6,800, down 0.1 percent from April. Overall, Zillow says home values in the US grew by more than 5 percent year-over-year. Gavin Newsom has vetoed a bill that would have required the State Justice Department to verify hunting licenses with Fish and Wildlife before approving a firearm sale to a person under 21.The proposed legislation came after ABC 10News uncovered that suspected Poway Synagogue shooter John Earnest purchased the weapon used in the April 2019 attack with an invalid hunting license that went unchecked. Earnest was only 19 at the time he bought the assault-style weapon from San Diego Guns, when the state's age-limit was 21. The age limit, however, remained 18 for those who possessed a valid, state-issued hunting license. The Justice Department does not verify hunting licenses with Fish and Wildlife, instead leaving it to the gun shop to make the only determination. The governor said creating the verification system would require a 30-month information technology project and could disrupt other firearm technology systems in development under seven other bills. "I am concerned that adding an information technology project will impede DOJ's ability to perform the work it has already been tasked," Newsom said in a veto statement. In an interview Wednesday, State Sen. Anthony Portantino expressed shock and disappointment that Newsom vetoed the legislation. "It's a loophole that needs to be closed," he said. "You can't have a system that relies on the validity of a license not being checked to make sure that that license is actually valid. The whole goal is to keep guns out of the wrong hands. This shooter in Poway got a gun based on a faulty license."Portantino vowed to continue pushing for the change, either through the governor's budget in January or a new bill next year. When making the purchase, Earnest presented a state hunting license that was not valid until July 1, 2019, two months after the alleged attack. That technicality meant the sale should have been rejected, Portantino said. It was Portantino's law that raised California's purchase age limit to 21 but created the hunting-license exemption for those 18 and older. Portantino's bill, Senate Bill 914, would have required the Justice Department to verify hunting licenses with Fish and Wildlife before approving a firearm sale to someone under 21. The bill passed both houses of the state Legislature before failing on the governor's desk.Still, legislators and Newsom did act in the aftermath of the shooting, by eliminating the hunting-license exemption for semi-automatic, center fire weapons. It still exists, however, for other guns, including bolt-action rifles and semi-automatic rimfire weapons. Israel Dahan, whose daughter Noya was injured by shrapnel during the attack, declined to comment, citing ongoing litigation related to the shooting. He said, however, that Noya, now 10, will likely need another minor surgery. Couple that with Democrats flipping the County Board of Supervisors after years of Republican control, and it appears a whole new philosophy is on the way."I've been waiting 20 years,” said Nicole Capretz, who heads the Climate Action Campaign. “This is, I mean, decades in the making.”Climate Action Campaign has fought the Republican-controlled Board of Supervisors for years over how it handles the environment, prevailing in court over the county's climate plan.“They've twice had to rescind their climate plan publicly, which is unprecedented,” Capretz said.Capretz said she expects things to change in January, when the board will flip to a 3-2 Democrat advantage. That is expected to shift how the county addresses key issues like the environment, public health, and housing - in other words, no more sprawling back country developments that many times wind up challenged in a public vote.“We have wasted so much energy and so much time debating things that were not legally valid and should not have been done,” said County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher.Meanwhile, over at City hall, the Democrats will expand their veto proof advantage on the city council from 6-3 to 8-1. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dozens of San Diego short-term vacation rental hosts sounded off Wednesday against a bill that could limit how much they're able to rent out some of their properties on sites like Airbnb and VRBO.The hosts implored the California Coastal Commission to oppose the bill at its meeting on Shelter Island.The bill, by North County Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner Horvath, is specific to San Diego County's coastal zone and would sunset in five years. It would limit how much hosts can rent out their non-primary residences on sites like Airbnb and VRBO to 30 days a year. "I can't believe this has even come up as an actual bill," Airbnb host John Wilson told the commission.Hosts also said they are using the income to put their kids through college, and that their rentals provide families affordable, large accommodations near the coast, allowing visitors to avoid renting multiple hotel rooms and resort fees. But Boerner Horvath said the bill is needed because short-term rentals are adding to the region's housing supply crunch."When the upper level of housing stock is removed for short-term vacation rentals, the folks that would have actually lived there move down the market; they usually want to live in a certain area," she said. The bill passed the Assembly and is now scheduled for state Senate committee hearings. The legislation comes after an Airbnb-led signature drive essentially blocked restrictions the San Diego City Council approved in 2018.
