Beyond the beaches of the world, lies the potential for oceans of energy."I'm very excited about this because it's a very renewable energy-based technology,” said Professor Bruce Logan of Penn State University.Logan and university researchers recently created a device that removes salt from seawater in a cheaper way, allowing that water to then be used to create a renewable form of hydrogen fuel.“There's a lot of interest in renewable hydrogen,” Logan said. “Most of the hydrogen made today is made from fossil fuels, and so, we're interested in making that hydrogen from water.”That involves splitting water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen. The problem? Seawater also has salt, which needs to be removed first and that’s expensive to do.However, the “seawater electrolyzer” that Logan and his team worked on takes care of that issue cheaply by using a special membrane and without requiring expensive desalination plants. The findings were recently published in the Journal of Energy and Environmental Science.“Hydrogen is a great fuel,” he said. “It's been examined as a fuel for many decades now.”About 97 percent of all the water on earth is in the ocean, which means if it could be used efficiently to make hydrogen fuel, it could be a game-changer.“As we look to de-carbonize our fossil fuel infrastructure, we also can use it primarily for heavy-duty vehicles,” Logan said. “Airbus is looking to actually make airplanes that fly on hydrogen.”For now, though, their device would need to be scaled-up to a much larger version.“There are many nations and companies and nations across the world looking to do this. One of the biggest proposed hydrogen plants is in Saudi Arabia -- billion,” Logan said. “I would hope to convince them that it might be cheaper and better to use seawater directly, you know, in a system like this.”It’s a possibility that might one day create a bridge between our energy needs on land and the power in the sea. 1962

(KGTV) - A helicopter made a hard landing in the Anza-Borrego desert about three miles east of Borrego Springs in East San Diego County Monday, deputies said.Four people were on board the Robinson R-44 helicopter when it went down about 1:30 p.m., according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Office.Three people were treated at the scene, according to The Borrego Sun. Deputies said they had minor injuries.The helicopter is registered to Big Blue Corp of Las Vegas. 10News is working to confirm that it may have been operated by Big Blue Air, a tour company based in Palm Springs. A company representative had no immediate comment on the landing.Borrego Springs Airport officials said the male pilot was on the way to the Rams Hill Country Club in Borrego Springs.The helicopter landed in rough terrain near Inspiration Wash, officials said. BONITA, Calif. (KGTV) - California Highway Patrol officers are investigating a wrong-way crash on the Eastbound lanes of Highway 54 near the 125. The crash happened just after 8 p.m. Friday and reduced traffic to one lane. All lanes reopened shortly before 11 p.m. CHP believes the driver of a red Toyota Corolla was driving the wrong way and crashed into a white BMW carrying a mother and two children. BALTIMORE, Maryland — Police are investigating a murder-suicide that started in Baltimore County and ended in Anne Arundel County on Wednesday.Around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Baltimore County Police found 28-year-old Amber Lynne Cox dead inside her home in the 10600 block of Davis Avenue in Woodstock. They say she was shot at least one time. According to police, Cox's husband, 35-year-old Harry Anthony Ray, was the one who killed her. BOZEMAN, Mont. — Cloie Musumecci sent MTN News a brief video of a woman tripping and falling as a bison charged at her and another person in Yellowstone National Park.Cloie said in an email that the incident happened at Nez Perce Creek. She said the woman "is a Montana local so she knew to play dead in that situation."The woman was was not injured and escaped "without a scratch," Cloie said.
