Students around the United States are walking out of class to demand tougher gun laws in response to last week's deadly shooting in Parkland, Florida, but some schools are threatening them with harsh punishments.The Needville Independent School District in Texas issued a warning Tuesday that anyone who participated in a walkout or other political protest would be suspended for three days."Life is all about choices and every choice has a consequence whether it be positive or negative. We will discipline no matter if it is one, fifty, or five hundred students involved. A disruption of the school will not be tolerated," he said.The letter was posted on the same day that a 14-year-old was arrested at Needville Junior High School and charged with making a terroristic threat.Survivors from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland have been active in the week since the shooting -- holding rallies, being interviewed by national media and organizing a bus trip to the Florida State Capitol to meet with lawmakers.Students at other schools in Florida and across the United States have held rallies to show support.A school district in Waukesha, Wisconsin, sent a letter to parents telling them that the school district is not involved in a walkout that is scheduled for March 14 and that teachers and students would not be excused if they participate."Participation in a walkout is disruptive and against school regulations, and will subject students to disciplinary measures," Superintendent Todd Gray said in the letter.In a follow-up statement on Wednesday, Gray said the the original letter was designed to let parents know that the walkout next month was planned by an outside group with no connection to the school."At no time have we said students cannot make a statement peacefully while staying in school," Gray said, adding that he had not gotten requests to participate from any students or student groups."We acknowledge that individuals have a right to demonstrate to support a cause. Target is hiring more than 100,000 temporary workers for the holidays -- a sharp increase over last year.The company announced Wednesday that the jobs will be in stores and distribution and fulfillment centers. The workers will stock shelves, help customers, pack and load products and fill online orders.In 2016, Target brought on 77,500 temporary workers.Target will hold recruiting events at each of its 1,800 stores from October 13 through 15. The company says applicants can interview and even be offered jobs on the spot.Prospective hires can also apply online.The temporary workers get a few benefits, including a 10% discount at the store and online, and 20% for fruits, vegetables and other "wellness" products.Employees who already work at Target can increase their hours during the holiday season. 816

(AP) — A Southern California doctor has been convicted of taking part in a million scheme to defraud Medicare.A federal jury on Wednesday found Donald Woo Lee of Temecula guilty of eight charges.Prosecutors say Lee provided medically unnecessary procedures to Medicare beneficiaries and provided phony billing codes to obtain a higher government reimbursement.Authorities say Lee submitted million in bills and received .5 million in reimbursements.Besides health care fraud, Lee was convicted of adulteration of a medical device because prosecutors say he re-packaged single-use catheters for reuse on patients. 647

TAMPA, Fla. — The Centers for Disease Control has just identified more than 220 strains of what they call “nightmare bacteria” that can kill up to 50 percent of the people who catch them.“I never ever thought that I would end up getting MRSA,” said Sandra Jankowski, who was infected with antibiotic resistant bacteria her father contracted during a visit to a local hospital.Jankowski believes she was infected while caring for her father at a nursing home.“He had small scrapes and other things, which meant what was there in his system was sort of out there for all the rest of us,” she said.Jankowski contracted MRSA in her eyes and she underwent treatment for months.“It's much more rampant than we realize and very difficult to get rid of,” Jankowski said.She was lucky, because her infection eventually responded to drugs.But the CDC announced Tuesday that researchers have identified more than 220 strains nationwide that don't respond to drugs.“We are learning what is the extent of the problem and how to best manage it. And that's so critical,” said Dr. Seetha Lakshmi, an infectious disease specialist at Tampa General Hospital.She says new research and better communication between local partners and state and federal agencies will help address the crisis.The first of its kind nationwide assessment released Tuesday provides new information to providers.The CDC has more than 500 employees dedicated to containing unusual antibiotic resistance.“If you're the frontline provider, how do you act on this issue? What are your resources?
