Investigators searching for missing University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts have gotten hundreds of tips and are looking for her in ponds, fields and from the air, officials said Friday morning at a news conference."Unfortunately, we have not yet found Mollie, but it has not been due to a lack of effort or a lack of resources," said Kevin Winker, director of investigative operations for the Iowa Department of Public Safety.Tips on the missing student "have been coming in regularly," and 30 to 40 investigators are on the case, Winker said.The 2-week-old case is "very frustrating, but it hasn't slowed our efforts," Winker said, adding that investigators "come to work everyday with the attitude that we're going to find Mollie."Asked whether they're investigating Tibbitts' disappearance as an abduction, Winker said they are treating it as a missing person case. He would not say whether investigators have any suspects or persons of interest.Tibbetts disappeared on July 18 in Brooklyn, Iowa, a small community an hour east of Des Moines, according to the Poweshiek County Sheriff's Office. 1109

In the wake of recent fatal pedestrian crashes, a law firm commissioned a study that reveals the most dangerous intersections for pedestrians in San Diego.In 2016, there were 103 pedestrian fatalities in San Diego County. Between 2010 and 2016, a total of 430 people were killed and nearly 8,000 injured in pedestrian crashes.According to the law firm Estey and Bomberger, the most dangerous intersection in San Diego lies in Hillcrest at the intersection of First Avenue and University Avenue.The below map shows the cities with the highest numbers of dangerous intersections in California. But new research suggests that the products may put young children at risk.The soups cause about one in five childhood scald burns, according to research to be presented Monday at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference. Those findings have led some experts to question the safety of the meals, which often come in microwavable cups."It's important for us to remember, and for parents to remember, that these are just thin containers with boiling water in them," said Dr. Courtney Allen, a pediatric emergency fellow at Emory University who led the research."I think there's an assumption that these are safer than soups coming out of a stove," she said, "when, in fact, they're not." 835

INDIANAPOLIS — Veteran's Affairs in Indianapolis says multiple graves at a Confederate burial site were smeared with tar and feathers earlier this month.The VA is seeking information that could lead to the identification of those responsible for smearing tar and feathers on graves in the "Confederate Mound" section of Crown Hill Cemetery."Vandalism and defacement of federal property is a serious crime, and VA is working with law enforcement officials to identify those responsible," the department said in a statement. "VA is committed to maintaining our cemeteries as national shrines, and that includes cleaning these gravesites, which memorialize those interred at the cemetery."The vandalism was discovered on June 6. Crown Hill Cemetery groundskeeper David Deems said he believes the graves were defaced that morning because the tar was still soft when he found it.Deems said he was able to clean most of the substance off the graves, but some remnants remain.The Confederate Mound is a federally-owned national cemetery that does not belong to Crown Hill Cemetery, though it is on its property.
