The death toll in a series of wildfires in California, Oregon and Washington rose to 36 as officials warn that an already-historic fire season is "far from over."As of Tuesday morning, wildfires have killed 25 people in California, 10 people in Oregon and one person in Washington dating back to mid-August.Fifteen people alone have died in California's North Complex Fire, which is currently burning in the Sierra Nevada mountains north of Sacramento. According to Cal Fire, the fire which has been burning for nearly a month, is currently 39% contained.In Oregon, the Beachie Creek fire and the Alameda Fire have each killed four people in recent days. The Beachie Creek fire, currently burning in the northern part of the state since Aug. 16, is 15% contained. The Alameda Fire is 100% contained, according to the Oregon wildfire dashboard.Though 2020 has already marked a record-setting year for wildfires in the western U.S., officials are bracing for more damage in the coming weeks. Wildfire season typically lasts through the end of October on the West Coast."We've had major destruction and, even sadly, two dozen fatalities already and we still have several months to go in our fire season here. The FBI continues to warn the American public on cyberattacks and foreign actors who are allegedly working to sow doubt on the upcoming presidential election.This week, the FBI released a statement saying that cyber criminals and foreign actors are attempting to use online platforms to “manipulate public opinion, discredit the electoral process, and undermine confidence in U.S. democratic institutions.”These cyber criminals are hoping to sow doubt on the election by saying that data has been “hacked” or “leaked,” the FBI said. Some voter information is generally publicly available, and doesn’t need to be hacked or leaked. While the ballots themselves are secret, absentee ballot requests, names, addresses and similar information is generally public record.Last week, the FBI said that cybercriminals could take advantage of the likelihood several states will need additional time to count ballots due to increased mail-in voting and social distancing protocols. While a delay in results does not indicate any wrongdoing, the FBI warns that foreign actors could attempt to spread misinformation to cause distrust in the system while votes are being tallied.Last month, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released a statement outlining efforts by Iran, China and Russia to attempt to undermine this year’s presidential election.“Ahead of the 2020 U.S. elections, foreign states will continue to use covert and overt influence measures in their attempts to sway U.S. voters’ preferences and perspectives, shift U.S. policies, increase discord in the United States, and undermine the American people’s confidence in our democratic process,” William Evanina, director of the United States National Counterintelligence and Security Center, said. Residents are still rebuilding in Wine Country more than a year after the destructive wildfires there.In the one year since Kelly Bracewell's Santa Rosa home turned to ash, she's figured out how to be happier. She’s also learned how to live without some of her most cherished possessions.As she rebuilds her own home, she works to help others who lost everything."As an interior designer, it’s been a great distraction,” she says.She says she wants to help put the community back together.Another community member, artist Gregory Roberts, is also using his talents to help people heal.One artist is using the ashes to help the people who lost their homes heal.“I was standing in the studio during the fires, and ash was falling all around,” Roberts describes.Roberts was certain that he, too, would lose his home. Fortunately, his house and pottery studio survived, but the ash raining down over Wine Country gave him an idea.“I wanted to be able to give people back something to let them know that your memories are not actually lost; your memories are all still intact,” he says.Roberts started collecting ash from lost homes. Ashes from 140 homes appeared in a plastic bin on his front porch, some with handwritten notes, of people wanting him to create art from their lost homes."Something from their home, because this idea that everything is lost is a hard one to overcome," Roberts says.Roberts says the ash remnants of homes are different, so the patterns and colors are never the same."I really want each one to be sort of its own unique animal,” Roberts says. “In the same way that each person's home is unique." 1691
