ROME (AP) — Cruise ship passengers had temperatures checked and took COVID-19 tests Sunday so they could set sail on what is being billed as the first Mediterranean cruise after Italy's pandemic lockdown. The cruise ship company MSC has made the procedures, for crew as well as passengers, part of its new health and safety protocols. The MSC Grandiosa departed from the port of Genoa on Sunday evening for a seven-night cruise. Earlier this month, the Italian government gave its approval for cruise ships to depart from Italian ports. (AP) — California's governor announced Friday that he is pardoning three more immigrants facing the possibility they will be deported, continuing a string of such actions that challenge the Trump administration's crackdown on immigrants who committed crimes.Gov. Gavin Newsom also commuted the life sentences of two youthful offenders who can now seek parole.Newsom's office said the three facing deportation "made bad decisions" while breaking the law as teenagers or young adults, but they served their sentences and transformed their lives. Deporting them now would be "an unjust collateral consequence" harming their families and communities.The three hail from Iran, El Salvador and Cambodia, but all now live in Los Angeles County. He also pardoned a fourth man, Curtis Reynolds, 59, of Sacramento County, who was convicted of six drug felonies between 1998 and 2003.Pardons do not automatically protect someone from deportation because they don't erase the criminal convictions on which deportation orders often are based. But they do emphasize the person's rehabilitation. Superior court judges previously granted two of the three immigrants, plus Reynolds, certificates of rehabilitation and recommended that they receive pardons.Newsom and his predecessor, fellow Democrat Jerry Brown, have granted several such commutations since Trump took office.The three newly pardoned immigrants are:— Arnou Aghamalian, 42, who was convicted 20 years ago of helping his cousin set an unoccupied car on fire. He had four prior misdemeanor convictions for theft and a hit and run in which no one was injured. The father of three now runs a carpet cleaning business. He was 2 years old when he and his parents lawfully came to the U.S. from El Salvador.— Thear Sam, 41, who was convicted of robbing a man of his wallet and backpack when he was 18. He was later convicted of being an accessory after he separately gave a man a ride after the man stole a car, led police on a high-speed chase and escaped on foot. He has worked more than 17 years for an aviation company, and his wife and daughter are both U.S. citizens. He was 4 when he lawfully entered the U.S. as a refugee from Cambodia fleeing the Khmer Rouge.Separately, the two men whose life sentences Newsom commuted can now go before the state parole board, which will decide if they can be safely released into the community. RUTHERFORD COUNTY, North Carolina — A teen who shot and killed her mother's boyfriend will not be charged, authorities said.The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office said on Aug. 8, Chandra Nierman's 15-year-old daughter shot the 46-year-old male as he was attacking Nierman.Her other children, a 12-year-old son, and a 16-year-old daughter were there when the violence occurred. Sheriff's deputies said the man was threatening to "cut Nierman’s throat and kill everyone in the house."A release from authorities said:"Nierman’s twelve-year-old son retrieved a firearm and Nierman’s fifteen-year-old daughter took the gun from her brother and fired it twice, striking the deceased male in the chest. One of the fired rounds fragmented, grazing Nierman’s sixteen-year-old daughter in the leg."The 16-year-old was taken to a hospital and was released."Nierman suffered significant bruises and contusions from the assault," the release said.The investigation also revealed the deceased man had threatened Nierman several times previously, and four days before, he had assaulted Nierman and fired multiple rounds from a firearm inside the residence to threaten and terrorize her."The investigation further revealed that the deceased male, who had multiple firearms in the house and frequently carried one on his person, was a convicted felon and had two active domestic violence protection orders against him from two different women in Indiana and Ohio, although no domestic violence or assaults had been reported to law enforcement locally prior to the fatal shooting," the release said. "The deceased male has been positively identified as Steven Kelley, originally from Indiana."Based on the facts and the evidence, "it is the conclusion of the District Attorney’s Office that the shooting was justified and no charges will be filed," the release states. 1903

Gavin Newsom says California will dedicate 30% of its land to conservation by 2030.Newsom said Wednesday that under an executive order, the state will direct agencies to store carbon in the state's natural and working lands and remove it from the atmosphere to preserve more than 30% of the state's land and coastal waters by 2030.The move is also meant to combat species and ecosystem loss, according to the governor's order."Once again, California is taking on the mantle of global climate leadership and advancing bold strategies to fight climate change," a statement from Newsom read. "The science is clear that, in our existential fight against climate change, we must build on our historic efforts in energy and emissions and focus on our lands as well. California’s beautiful natural and working lands are an important tool to help slow and avert catastrophic climate change, and today’s executive order provides important new tools to take on this existential threat."To hit climate goals, agencies will be directed to practice:Healthy soils management, including planting cover crops, hedgerows, and compost applications,Wetlands restoration to protect coastal areas,Active forest management to reduce risk and restore forest health,Boost green infrastructure in urban areas like trees and parksLast month, Newsom announced California will phase out all gasoline-powered cars by 2035 in an effort to reduce the state's emissions.
