BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- China strongly opposes a declaration issued by the European Union on a Chinese human rights case, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang here Sunday.Qin made the remarks in response to a question on China's attitude towards the EU declaration.The EU said in its declaration that it regrets the decision of the higher people's court of Sichuan Province to confirm the sentence of Tan Zuoren to five years in prison for "subversion of state power."It also appeals to the Chinese government to release Tan unconditionally.Tan Zuoren, a former magazine editor, was sentenced in February on the charge of inciting subversion of state power. This week, the Sichuan provincial higher people's court upheld Tan's five-year prison term.Qin said, China's justice department handled the case independently according to the Chinese law.The EU declaration has interfered in China's judicial affairs," Qin said. "China firmly opposes and is strongly dissatisfied over it."Qin hoped the EU would respect China's judicial sovereignty and safeguard the overall situation of Sino-EU relations.

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Some 87 percent of Chinese who studied abroad in 2009 received financial support from their parents, China.com.cn, a government-run website, reported Sunday quoting a survey by education research company MyCOS.The survey divided its interviewees into two categories: undergraduate students who graduated from China's top 211 universities in 2009 and those who did not.According to the survey, 1.64 percent of undergraduate students graduating from China's top 211 universities in 2009 went abroad for study, 0.61 percentage points higher year on year.Some 0.69 percent of undergraduate students from the other category also pursued overseas studies.According to the survey, the majority of the students who studied abroad took economics and business management as their major.The survey also showed 9 percent of those studying abroad received scholarships from the foreign institutions while 3 percent supported themselves through part-time jobs. One percent were funded by the Chinese government.Chinese universities and colleges graduated 6.1 million students in 2009, according to statistics from the Ministry of Education.

ASTANA, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived here Friday evening for a two-day state visit to Kazakhstan.Hu said in a statement released upon arrival at the airport that, with the effort of both sides, his visit would be a total success and help advance the strategic partnership between China and Kazakhstan to a new stage.During the visit, Hu will hold talks with his Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev and meet with parliament and government leaders.The two sides will outline the future development of bilateral links. BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- A total of 600 soldiers with the Lanzhou Military Area Command have arrived at mudslides-devastated Zhouqu county in northwest China's Gansu Province, and started relief work.Three other detachments consisting of more than 1,700 soldiers with the command as well as a 180-member medical team are on their way to the affected areas.Six helicopters, including four from the Lanzhou command and two from the Xinjiang Military Area Command, have also departed for the affected areas.China's armed police have also sent 2,100 members to help with the relief work, with 740 of them having arrived at the scene.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Amid sirens and blaring horns, people across China Sunday stood in tribute to victims of a massive mudslide in a remote northwest town.Chinese leaders, students, workers and members of the public paused for three minutes from 10 a.m. Sunday, a week after the devastating mudslide hit Zhouqu County, in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gansu Province.At least 1,248 people have died and 496 are listed as missing.Chinese President Hu Jintao, top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao and other top Chinese leaders stood and paid silent tribute to the victims at the beginning of a meeting by the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee held in Beijing on Sunday morning.DEEP GRIEFAt the Dongjie Village in Zhouqu, more than 5,000 rescuers and villagers stood still on the debris of mudslide, bowing their heads in commemoration of those killed in the disaster.A huge black banner hung in front of the mourners, and wreaths lay on the ground. The white lettering on the banner read, "Mourning in deep grief for deceased compatriots of the Zhouqu massive mudslide.""I only feel sad as I stand on the debris of our homes," said villager Zhang Xiujuan."Although my husband, my son and I survived, I lost more than 30 relatives in the mudslide," she said.In Dongjie, two thirds of the families were buried when the mudslide struck. And 368 of the 848 villagers died in the disaster.Before and after the three-minute tribute, rescuers including troops and medical workers continued to clear the debris, searching for bodies and spraying disinfectant in the area.Some survivors sat silently on the debris, still holding out hope that the bodies of relatives could be found.
