BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Flooding and landslides triggered by recent heavy rain have killed at least 42 people as of Wednesday in the worst hit provinces like Guangxi, Fujian and Sichuan, while 49 others are still missing.Storms are forecast to continue to sweep across most parts of South China over the next 10 days, with some areas due to receive 250mm of rain, the China Meteorological Administration said on Wednesday.The national weather forecaster said rainstorms will also hit Guizhou, Sichuan, Fujian and Guangdong the following week.The National Meteorological Center issued a yellow alert on Wednesday morning for heavy rain across parts of China. Residents wade through the waterlogged street in Nanning, southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on June 15. HANGZHOU, July 4 (Xinhua) -- A new regular direct passenger sea route between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan was officially opened Saturday after a ship safely returned from Taiwan.The passenger ship, Coscostar, returned to the Damaiyu Port, Taizhou City of eastern Zhejiang Province Saturday, making it the second port on the mainland that has served the regular direct sea route with Taiwan, said He Jinliang, deputy head of the city's Taiwan affairs office.On June 26, the ship, carrying more than 500 passengers, traveled about 302 km to the Keelung Port of Taiwan, He said.With a tonnage of 26,800, the ship, owned by the China Ocean Shipping Companies Group, could carry about 600 passengers, 256 containers and 150 automobiles.The COSCO Star Passenger Ro-Ro Ship is berthed inside the Dabaiyu Port, prior to its maiden voyage to Keelung of Taiwan, at Taizhou City, east China's Zhejiang Province, June 26, 2010.The ship is scheduled to shuttle once a week. YICHANG, July 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Three Gorges Dam was tested for the second time this month when the swiftest water flow of the year hurtled down the swollen Yangtze River on Wednesday morning.Flow rates as high as 56,000 cubic meters per second were recorded at the dam at 8 a.m. Wednesday, dam engineers said.The dam withstood the flow with a water discharge rate of 40,000 cubic meters per second, meaning 16,000 cubic meters of water per second accumulated in the reservoir behind the dam.The safety monitoring results of the dam during the second flood peak have met engineers' predictions to prove its ability to contain flood waters, said Cao Guangjing, chairman of the China Three Gorges Corporation.The water level in the reservoir had risen to 158 meters at 8 a.m.Wednesday, about 17 meters below its maximum capacity of 175 meters.Officials expect the water level to rise to 161.5 meters Friday, a spokesman with the Yangtze River hydrology bureau said Wednesday.Continuous downpours in recent weeks have raised water levels in the upper reaches of the Yangtze.Water flows on the river's upper reaches reached 70,000 cubic meters per second on July 20 -- the highest level since the dam was completed last year and 20,000 cubic meters more than the flow during the 1998 floods that killed 4,150 people.Ship traffic through the dam resumed last Thursday after the first peak flow passed. But shipping was halted again at 10 p.m. Tuesday as the second round of floodwaters approached.After shipping service was suspended, a road near the dam was opened for vehicles to transport goods and people across the dam.
