Thousands more people are one paycheck away from becoming homeless.As a county, San Diego has the fourth-largest homeless population in the United States. To help, we've created this resource guide to help those in need for assistance.WHERE TO START Dial 211: You can reach a free, confidential hotline for help with multiple services. Representatives are on hand 24 hours a day to answer all questions. Last year, the hotline received more than 500,000 calls, about a fourth of which dealt with housing concerns. Learn more FOR HOUSING City of San Diego: Anyone in need of a bed in one of the city’s four emergency shelters and three bridge shelters will be placed through an assessment, with space going to the “most vulnerable people first”, the city reports. The assessment can be taken at multiple locations around the city, most of which provide other services to the homeless. Learn more San Diego Housing Commission: The City of San Diego also partners with the SDHC to provide care for individuals and families in different stages of homelessness through shelters, help with rental payments, and federal housing vouchers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sheriff's Department requested the public's help locating a North County woman who disappeared more than seven years ago.Kimberly "Kim" Jo Evans, 48, was last seen on April 30, 2013, by her mother at their Encinitas home. Evans left that morning on foot and has not been seen or heard from since.Evans was last seen wearing a green plaid blouse, green shorts, and carrying a suitcase.She's described as 5'6", weighing about 110 pounds, has reddish-brown hair and brown eyes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thousands of sailors and Marines returned to San Diego Wednesday, just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.The USS Boxer brought more than 4,500 sailors and Marines of the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group and 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit to home port at Naval Base San Diego.Many service members arrived to friends and family members — in some cases, new family members — who have waited seven months to be together.Wednesday, the USS John P. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier arrived in its new home port of San Diego Monday, bringing thousands of sailors and hundreds of millions of dollars in estimated annual economic impact for the region.The Navy will relocate another carrier strike group, the USS Carl Vinson, to San Diego this summer, giving the city three carriers for the first time in a decade.
