SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County reported 409 new coronavirus cases Thursday and a single-day record of 17 new deaths from the virus.Thursday's new cases had a 4% positive rate out of 10,434 reported tests, according to the county, bringing the region's total to 21,855 cases. The county's new deaths brought the county's death toll to 465. Eleven men and six women died between July 2 and July 15, and their ages ranged from 51 to 90 years of age. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County has seen two flu deaths and more than twice the unusual number of illnesses so far this season, health officials reported Wednesday. County Health and Human Services officials said the number of confirmed flu cases is more than double the past three-year average, putting this year on par with the severe 2017-2018 flu season. Seventy-seven San Diego County residents died of flu complications last season. Almost 10,000 became ill. More than 235 cases of flu were confirmed by Sept. 28, compared to 67 at this time last flu season. “People should get vaccinated now to avoid getting sick and infecting others,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The vaccine is safe and effective and is available throughout the region.” The flu shot is recommended for everyone over six months old. It takes about two weeks for immunity to develop, according to health officials. Anyone who needs the vaccine and does not have health insurance can go to a County public health center. For a list of locations, call 22 or visit the San Diego Immunization Program website. 1129

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego is playing a pivotal role as a testing ground for the future border wall while the region prepares for President Trump’s visit Tuesday.WHY SAN DIEGO?The region, specifically Otay Mesa, was selected as a location for the eight prototypes because of site accessibility to construct and the ability to evaluate the wall as part of a larger, existing border infrastructure system, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Ralph DeSio.San Diego County’s value as a construction site was detailed in a presentation made by the Department of Homeland Security and obtained by NPR.CBP officers can compare the performance of the prototypes to underperforming existing materials in the same location, according to the document. The prototypes can also be evaluated for the impact on operations in an existing enforcement zone. The land where the prototypes are constructed is federally owned, making the project more affordable. As far as the CBP is concerned, the proof of the border wall’s success is in the pudding. A video made by the agency showed an 87 percent reduction in arrests at the border after the creation of a physical barrier.FINANCIAL IMPACT OF THE BORDER WALLSan Diego had funds earmarked for border wall construction ahead of the prototype construction. The CBP allocated 9,000 to replace the primary fence and replace the secondary fence with a wall in the 2017 fiscal year.Despite the federal green light, the San Diego City Council formally opposed the project. The group voted to support Councilmember Georgette Gómez’s proposal to oppose the Border Wall Funding Act of 2017.In her resolution, Gómez cited a San Diego Association of Governments and Caltrans study on the economic impacts of border delays on the cross-border economy. The study found the effects of border crossing delays cost .2 billion in foregone gross output and more than 62,000 jobs in both the U.S. and Mexico economies in 2007."As a city that is invested in the binational economic development of our region, it is important to oppose the building of a wall and focus our resources in enhancing our border infrastructure to ease access of goods and people," Gómez wrote.“The border wall is a huge mistake for our region economically and environmentally. I am happy the City Council voted to pass my resolution. Our tax dollars should be spent uplifting the quality of life for all San Diegans, and tackling our issues on road infrastructure, housing, and homelessness,” she said. For the immediate neighbors of the border wall prototypes, the initial impact has been positive.Otay Pizza manager Wade Aljabi said he’s had an increase in business from CBP officers and construction workers. That might change tomorrow as President Trump’s visit leads to road closures just east of his location in a strip mall at SR-905 and Siempre Viva Rd.“We’ll be open 7 to 7,” Aljabi said. 2932

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Residents in Ocean Beach are expressing concern over massive gatherings consistently happening in their neighborhood. On Wednesday evening, ABC 10News captured video of what looked like a festival, with dozens of people socializing and playing music at a park near the OB Pier. Many among the crowd were observed not following county public health orders of social distancing and face coverings.San Diego police were called to the park after receiving complaints regarding the big crowds and noise.Earlier in the day, during the county's COVID-19 press conference with Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, the Ocean Beach Town Council addressed their concerns over the gatherings. The council asked San Diego leaders when they will do more to address the issues.Fletcher was asked about enforcement funding and how that would help with concerns like those raised by the OB Town Council."In the first bucket of enforcement that was provided, there are 13 staff who will be dedicated on those egregious and very blatant willful violations of what’s happening in addition to the efforts that we do around outbreaks and pre-outbreaks," Fletcher responded.Police said large gatherings in Ocean Beach take place every Wednesday.Mark Winkie, president of the OB Town Council, said, “We feel like we’re being disrespected. We call it ‘mayhem in Ocean Beach.' That’s really what it is right now.”Winkie said the town council has submitted multiple complaints along with a letter that said, in part: “They need to do something about the unacceptable levels of gatherings, gallons on trash left behind and illegal vendors selling merchandise.”Winkie added those are all huge public health concerns."We'd like some education to be done for the people down there. We don't want the police department to arrest people, we want the people to understand this is our community. You're welcome to be here, but you need to adhere to social distancing rules and respect our community,” Winkie said.So far, police have only responded to noise complaints in the area.City Councilmember Jennifer Campbell, whose district includes Ocean Beach, told ABC 10News in a statement that she is "committed to direct additional resources on Wednesday nights and has urged the mayor and county to enforce mask wearing and social distancing."Winkie said that's not enough."The city doing anything at all to prevent people from congregating closely together as they have been is not accurate, that hasn't been done,” said Winkie.Neighbors said many of the crowds start at the farmer's market then work their way towards the park.ABC 10News reached out to OB's Main Street Association, who is in charge of that event. They said they're working on an official statement, but they want to do what's best for the community. 2801
