SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Lemon Grove man who aimed a laser pointer at a San Diego police helicopter during a police protest this summer is facing a maximum possible sentence of five years in prison following his conviction by a federal jury, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Thursday.Rudy Alvarez, 25, was found guilty by a jury in San Diego federal court late Wednesday for shining a laser at the SDPD chopper around 8:30 p.m. June 4 in the area of 500 University Ave.The U.S. Attorney's Office said Alvarez shined the laser at the chopper multiple times over the course of an hour as he marched with protesters through downtown San Diego.The count of aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft carries a maximum possible sentence of five years in prison and a 0,000 fine. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Lab-confirmed flu cases rose nearly 70 percent in San Diego County last week as flu season continues to ramp up, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Wednesday.Doctors around the county reported 489 confirmed flu cases during the week of Dec. 8-14, an increase of 198 over the previous week's total of 291 flu cases. According to the HHSA, doctors have confirmed 1,709 flu cases since the flu season began July 1, nearly double the 932 confirmed at this time last year.No flu-related deaths were reported last week, but this flu season's seven deaths still outpace the six confirmed deaths at this time last flu season. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities today identified a 19-year-old woman who was fatally shot following a parking lot fight in the Bonita area. Sheriff's deputies responded at 7:40 p.m. Saturday to a report of shooting at an apartment complex in the 5100 block of Cedarwood Road, according to Lt. Thomas Seiver of the Sheriff's Homicide Unit.The initial investigation revealed a fight took place between several women in the parking lot before the victim, identified as Janessa Delvalle, was fatally shot, Seiver said. When deputies arrived, they found people giving her CPR.She was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As part of its reopening plan amid the coronavirus pandemic, the San Diego Unified School District allowed some students facing severe challenges to return to in-person learning today, but a timeline for the district to reopen fully remains unclear.Phase 1 of the district's plan to reopen is to allow elementary school students ``who have been uniquely identified by their teachers as experiencing learning loss'' to have limited in-person appointments.Participation is voluntary and students who participate in the sessions will continue to receive online learning.On Tuesday, Lafayette Elementary School in the Clairemont Mesa neighborhood invited back 25 of the 27 students who were asked to return to in- person instruction -- many of whom are part of a deaf and hard-of-hearing program at the school.The district's Phase 1 includes a mandate for less than 20% capacity for rooms and for schools, half days to avoid groups eating at schools and a six-foot distancing everywhere on school grounds -- barriers or no barriers.This summer, San Diego Unified adopted standards developed in consultation with experts from UC San Diego. As a result, conditions for the district's reopening local schools are considerably stricter than state standards, and much stricter than various other school districts in the region that have opened for in-person learning.According to the district, all California Department of Public Health criteria has been met to a level where limited in-person classes are possible.The next stage will be when both state and county data fit the district's stricter metrics. That date is anyone's guess, leading to some frustration from parents.Parents and guardians in the ``Reopen SDUSD'' group said the district's current reopening plan was ``riddled with vague language that is a far cry from a comprehensive plan that families have been asking for.''With the criteria SDUSD has in place, it could be weeks or months until in-person school becomes more widely used. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who was sentenced to nearly a decade in state prison for crashing a pickup truck over the side of a transition ramp to the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, killing four people and injuring several others when it landed in Chicano Park below, was released from state prison Friday.Richard Anthony Sepolio, 28, was released Friday morning after serving two years and 10 months of his nine-year, eight-month sentence, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office confirmed.Sepolio was convicted by a jury last year of four counts of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and one count of DUI causing injury.
