SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Five San Diego Police officers were recognized for their exceptional bravery during the Las Vegas Massacre. Fifty-eight people died, and more than 400 others were injured in the 2017 shooting."When others run from danger, police officers run towards it," San Diego Police David Nisleit said, as he opened the awards ceremony at Miramar Air Station. On October 1, 2017, a group of San Diego Police officers was vacationing with their families in Las Vegas. They were enjoying their first year at the Route 91 Harvest Festival. But around 10 pm, the event turned deadly. "It probably wasn't fireworks or firecrackers. It wasn't just a shooting on the strip," Officer Thomas McGrath Jr. said. "We knew it was gunfire," Detective Michael Do said. "We just didn't know where it was coming from."The 1,100 bullets were fired from 32 stories up the Mandalay Bay Resort. That is when the eleven off-duty San Diego Police officers went from Vacation-mode to Action-mode. Officers Thomas McGrath, Mark Williams, Max Verduzco, Richard Barton, and Detective Michael Vo began shielding concert-goers, treating the wounded, and creating escape routes. For their heroic actions, the five men received the Department's highest decoration of bravery-- the "Medal For Valor.""I don't think I did anything special," Officer McGrath said. "I just did the same thing that I would normally do during patrol or what I have been trained to do."After helping the first group of people, Officer McGrath went back into the crowd and found Jonathan Smith, who had been shot in the neck. "I put as much fabric and shirt inside his neck to stop the bleeding," McGrath said. " I put pressure on it and did my best to get them out of that venue."He said the Department's tactical combat care training kicked it. It was an act that eventually saved Smith's life. "The bullet missed my carotid artery by a few centimeters, and it is still lodged in there," Smith said. He showed 10News his dark scar near his collar bone and said the bullet is still in a small pocket behind his heart. Without McGrath's quick actions, doctors told Smith, he would have died. Thursday, Smith drove from his home in Buena Park to not only attend the ceremony but to also give the "Lifesaving Medal" to his hero.Six other officers who were in attendance of the Route 91 festival also received recognition at Thursday's ceremony. Officers Caitlin Milligan, Eric Hansen, Bryan Johnson, William Hernandez Jr., Braden Wilson, and Detective Scott Gosnell were awarded the "Exceptional Performance Citation" for helping concert-goers escape from the venue.All of these heroic acts were made by San Diego Police Officers who were not in uniform at the time. They say the tragedy continues to inspire them to be proud members of the Department."I love my job. And I love the training that I get and being that person that can step up in times of need is always what I wanted to do," Officer Max Verduzco said. "Two years later, I still want to help people. And I think that event made me want to help more people. It made me proud to be a police officer," Det. Michael Do said. Smith told 10News the tragedy and Officer McGrath's actions inspired him to make a career change. SAN DIGEO (KGTV) - The number of calls to San Diego County’s Child Abuse Hotline has dropped by more than half since schools across the region closed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease.County data provided to 10News shows a more than 50 percent decrease in calls regarding allegations of child abuse or neglect.According to the county, for the week of March 9 to 15, there were 1,859 calls. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- It's been more than a year since the first legal cannabis transaction took place in the City of San Diego. Marijuana industry professionals gave members of the City Council an update on revenue, but also pushed for updated laws.The City if San Diego found out that going green generated green. Since San Diego voters approved of Measure N or the Cannabis Business Tax in 2016, the City’s general fund has increased by .3 million. It's the culmination of a 5% tax from the 14 legal pot shops within the city in 2018.Dallin Young with the Association of Cannabis professionals also updated Council members that crime numbers around marijuana establishments are close to none. However, Young also expressed the industry's hopes for updated city rules. He said the permits are a massive hurdle for pot shop operators. As it stands now, both public retailers and harvesting facilities are only permitted in areas one thousand feet from parks, schools, and churches, 100 feet away from residential areas, and they must be in industrial zones. “Those properties are a little more expensive, they’re off the beaten path, and there are not many available," Young said. Because of these strict rules, Young said future operators struggle to open. More people are applying for permits than what the city has made available. He said the supply and demand for marijuana facilities in the city of San Diego do not align. “We’re just asking for this business and industry to be treated like any other business when it comes to commercial sales," Young said.The industry is also asking the city to consider a place for customers to use their products. Now, people can only smoke pot products if they own their home, or if their lease allows for pot smoking. That is why Young is suggesting the city to approve the opening of a pot version of a hookah bar.“[We are asking for] Consumption at these retail locations or a separate use like a cigar bar or more like a tasting room for a brewery,” Young said.Lastly, Young is hoping the city extends the operating hours for pot shops to match the State's. Currently, the city only allows pot shops to operate between 7 am and 9 pm. The State of California allows for sales between 6 am and 9 pm.“We want to make sure that this industry is thriving and it does well. So if it’s one extra hour, that’d be great," Young said. Young understands that changing rules for a new industry is not easy. But he is hopeful with small changes, it will shift the industry away from illegal sales."I think a lot of people would rather go to a licensed facility than to someone down the street," Young said. 2650

A group of San Diegans organized the event held at the park next to Centro Cultural de la Raza, hoping to unite the city and advocate change."It hurts, it's going to take a while, we're not going to forget," Pat Palma said. She has friends and family in Texas and feared for their safety when the shots rang out August 3rd."Tried to locate everybody, it was hard, I finally did. Sunday I was just numb," she said."That person did not go to Walmart asking if you're a Democrat or a Republican or a Trump supporter or not. He went there to shoot brown people," Organizer Jessica Yanez Perez said.The victims range in age from 82-2-years-old.At the vigil, they held a prayer asking for support for the families experiencing grief, lit candles for those lost and had speakers who preached involvement to create change."This is something that touched close to home for a lot of us," Yanez Perez said El Paso and San Diego are the same city. She explained both cities are made up of the same people, "people of Mexican ethnicity, of immigrants, of people who cross the border to work."The organizers hope the crowd touched by the senseless killing can show unity, through more than the color of their skin, "what happens here, what can we do here, to prevent something like that and I think the biggest thing is coming together as a community reminding each other we are one we are San Diego." 1522
