Thousands of Qualcomm workers are facing uncertainty as the San Diego tech giant considers Broadcom's 0 billion takeover bid. Analysts say a takeover could include layoffs.If that happens, those displaced workers may actually find their next job in a craft brewery or coffee shop. That opportunity stems from Qualcomm's 2015 layoff of 1,300 local workers.At the time, the San Diego Workforce Partnership decided not to hold a traditional job fair. The organization is charged with helping laid off workers find new jobs. But CEO Peter Callstrom said the traditional job fair wouldn't work, and opted for a more relaxed environment."We can do it with some great craft brew and conversation and find that next career path," he said. The partnership came up with a smaller, happy hour style job fair, where former Qualcomm workers could connect with local tech employers like ESET and Tritech Software Systems. It worked. And last year the White House honored the program. Now, hiring at Happy Hour events are taking place at craft breweries - and coffee shops - across the county, focusing on fields like health care, life sciences, advanced manufacturing and clean energy. The events are free and open to the public but you have to register ahead of time. Thirteen days before the 2020 presidential election, former President Barack Obama arrived on the campaign trail in the Keystone State of Pennsylvania on Wednesday to lend a hand to his former Vice President Joe Biden.The stalwart and arguably most popular figure of the Democratic Party is hoping to lend his esteem among Democrats to push them to the polls for Biden. Opinion polls are showing a slight lead for Biden in Pennsylvania, and the state could end up being the keystone to reaching 270 Electoral College votes.Obama delivered a fiery rebuke of President Donald Trump, going after his leadership amid the coroanvirus pandemic, and his plans to eliminate the Affordable Care Act. "Where is this great plan to replace Obamacare? They’ve had 10 years to do it. There is no plan," Obama said. Pennsylvania played an important role in 2016 in sending Trump to the White House; Trump won the state by .6%. Trump was the first Republican presidential candidate to win the state since 1988, but the state has been hotly contested in tight elections. In 2004, John Kerry won Pennsylvania by just 2%, while Al Gore won the state by 4% in 2000.The former president had approval ratings well above those of Biden and Trump when he left office. In January 2017, Obama had a 59% approval rating nationally, according to Gallup. A year later, Gallup conducted a retrospective job approval rating, which gave him a 63% approval rating. By comparison, Trump has a 43% approval rating, according to Gallup; Biden has a 46% favorability rating.Due to the coronavirus, Wednesday’s rally was a drive-in, with supporters socially distanced.Joining Obama was a number of prominent Philadelphia-area Democrats, including Gov. This is a story about a state trooper, a collision and a lie.It begins at a parking lot in Michigan.  While on duty last May, Trooper Kevin Klomparens had pulled into a Chipotle restaurant in his Michigan State Police vehicle.  He was backing into a parking space when his SUV backed into a parked car.The damage caused was minimal: scratches and a small dent that totaled a few hundred dollars in damage. But Trooper Klomparens didn’t notify the car’s owner, leave a note or report the accident. Instead, he pulled out of the space and left.The driver of the damaged car turned out to be a 20-year-old college student who worked at a Southfield restaurant. She didn’t feel comfortable talking to Detroit-based WXYZ on-camera for this story, but said off-camera that she learned about the accident from two people who witnessed it. They told her, and then police.According to police records, the two witnesses said they heard “a loud crunch” and saw the trooper “commit a hit and run.”  Dispatch notified nearby officers that one of their own had been involved in an accident.  Klomparens heard the message on his police radio, and that’s when he turned his small problem into a much bigger one.Klomparens: I just got sideswiped by a car, I’m at 8 and Lahser.  He flipped and headed back east on Westbound 8 Mile, I’m trying to catch up.  I’m not entirely sure what kind of car it is, a grey sedan.Dispatch: And he’s now Eastbound or Westbound on 8?Klomparens: Eastbound. He hit a turnaround, I’m stopped at a traffic light when he hit my backend.Klomparens said he was the victim of a crime and said he was in a police chase with the person responsible.Dispatch: Did you get a plate?Klomparens: Negative on a plate, he turned behind me, there was a Michigan u-turn behind me. He turned back and sped off eastbound.In truth, there was no chase.  No sideswipe.  Klomparens made it all up.“Unbelievable that this officer would respond in that manner,” said Willie Bell, who spent 32 years as a Detroit Police Officer. “You’re violating the confidence that people have in police officers in general.”Today, Bell serves on the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners.“It’s a simple accident, but now it lays to totally lack of confidence, not just in this officer, but police officers in general,” Bell said.After the accident, MSP investigated and Trooper Klomparens admitted to making the story up.  The case was forwarded to Attorney General Bill Schuette’s office for possible prosecution. His office declined to charge the trooper with anything, writing in part that while “(w)e are certainly not condoning the actions of the trooper,” “there are better ways to handle this particular incident.”WXYZ asked to speak with Attorney General Schuette on camera to understand why he chose not to bring charges. His office declined. “The average citizen easily would have been charged in this case,” said Michael L. Steinberg, a criminal defense attorney who’s represented men and women accused of hit and run accidents. “Providing false information to a police officer is usually going to get the attention of the prosecuting attorney’s office,” he said. “A police officer doesn’t get special status as far as the law goes.”Klomparens won’t face charges, but he could still face discipline. He is still working at MSP today while internal affairs continues to investigate, more than five months since the accident happened. There was a “concerning” increase in the number of drug overdoses in the US in from March through May 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday.The data were part of an annual analysis of drug overdoses in the US. The data went from June 2019 through May 2020. The CDC noted that pre-pandemic drug overdoses were up in the month preceding the pandemic, but increased further when much of the US economy closed to stop the spread of the virus in March.The CDC previously estimated that 19,416 Americans died from drug overdoses from January through March 2020, which was up nearly 3,000 deaths. Approximately 81,230 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States in the 12-months ending in May 2020, the CDC reported. For the year ending in May, there were nearly 10,000 additional drug overdose deaths compared to the previous year.The CDC said that synthetic opioids, primarily illicitly manufactured fentanyl likely drove the increase. The American Medical Association says that there has been a 37% drop in prescriptions of opioids since 2014.“The increase in overdose deaths is concerning.” said Deb Houry, M.D., M.P.H., director of CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. “CDC’s Injury Center continues to help and support communities responding to the evolving overdose crisis. Our priority is to do everything we can to equip people on the ground to save lives in their communities.”The CDC issued a set of recommendations to help combat drug overdoses:Expand distribution and use of naloxone and overdose prevention education.Expand awareness about and access to and availability of treatment for substance use disorders.Intervene early with individuals at highest risk for overdose.Improve detection of overdose outbreaks to facilitate more effective response.The CDC added that “Measures taken at the national, state, and local level to address the COVID-19 pandemic may have unintended consequences for substance use and overdose, but CDC is working with states, territories, tribes, cities, and counties across the country to continue drug overdose surveillance and prevention efforts.”During the same timeframe of March through May 2020, more than 67,000 Americans died from the coronavirus despite intense mitigation efforts, according to Johns Hopkins University data. The death tolls from the coronavirus and drug overdoses show the challenge public health officials face in keeping the country healthy amid a pandemic.“The disruption to daily life due to the COVID-19 pandemic has hit those with substance use disorder hard,” said CDC Director Robert Redfield, M.D. “As we continue the fight to end this pandemic, it’s important to not lose sight of different groups being affected in other ways. We need to take care of people suffering from unintended consequences.” 2842
