SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The countdown has begun for St. Patrick's Day in San Diego. The Gaslamp District is heavily bedazzled with sparkly green decorations. Many people said they are ready to party.Niamh Thornton is a 24 year old Irish student, now living in San Diego. “Niamh is pronounced like “Christmas Eve,” but with an “N” like “Neev”… It’s Irish,” Thornton said. She has been working at the Field Irish Pub in the Gaslamp District since last June."It's called an Irish Mule… It's lovely,” she said, pointing at a popular drink at the pub.The Irish native was getting ready for a 10-hour shift at the Field Saturday. "It's going to be crazy, I'd say,” Thornton said. Crazy may be an understatement.Saturday, many blocks downtown will be closed from sunrise to sunset-- for the morning Shamrock Run, the daytime parade, and shamROCK, the evening concert. Plus, many will be staring at the television screens, screaming for their favorite Irish teams. “England vs. Ireland in the rugby,” she said. ”And six nations. That’s insane. So this place is going to be packed.”But some people just could not wait to pre-party. Many people we saw in Downtown were showcasing their green accessories and outfits. Some were fully dressed up as lucky leprechauns. Kristin Ventura was showing off her Irish American pride with her co-workers at the Field Irish Pub. She said it is the one day of the year that anyone can be an honorary Irishman."Everyone is a little bit Irish,” Ventura said. “Deep down inside, there is that little spunk in you."Thornton said that spunk comes from St. Patrick himself, who legend said, saved the island from a slithery invasion."He got rid of snakes in Ireland,” Thornton said. “So that's why there are no snakes in Ireland."That was the start of the St. Patrick’s Day celebration for everyone — even for those on the other side of the planet. But for Thornton, that will have to have to wait until the end of her shift Saturday.“Then I'm going to go out and have fun,” Thornton laughed.  2066

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Navy has called off search and rescue efforts to find a Sailor from the USS Theodore Roosevelt who reportedly went overboard.Navy crews from the San Diego-based carrier and five other vessels ended the search at sunset on Saturday. Crews and the U.S. Coast Guard searched more than 607 square nautical miles for more than 55 hours off the coast of Southern California.Ships began rescue efforts after a lookout spotted what they believed to be a person in the water at about 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, according to the Navy.RELATED: San Diego-based USS Theodore Roosevelt searching for Sailor overboardThe Navy ad the Sailor's family identified him as 20-year-old Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Apprentice Ethan Garrett Goolsby of Texas.Goolsby reported to the USS Theodore Roosevelt in July after his initial training as an aviation ordnanceman in Pensacola, Fla. He was promoted to his current rank on Sept. 16. "The loss of our Sailor is felt deeply by all on board," said Capt. Eric Anduze, commanding officer of Theodore Roosevelt. "The entire Theodore Roosevelt team sends our deepest condolences to the family of our missing shipmate."The Sailor's family was notified before the search stopped. The Navy said it has changed the Sailor's status to "deceased."Rear Admiral Doug Verissimo, commander of Carrier Strike Group Nine, added that the strike group, "sends our thoughts and prayers to the family and loved ones of our missing shipmate. I offer my thanks to all the Sailors and Coast Guardsmen who were involved in the search."The USS Theodore Roosevelt departed San Diego several days ago for an exercise at sea ahead of its second deployment of the year, according to USNI News. The ship is set to change its homeport from San Diego to Bremerton, Wash., for an overhaul in 2021. 1816

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The mother of the hero pilot who made an emergency landing Friday on I-8 in El Cajon says she couldn't be more proud.Kelly Muno said Friday afternoon she got an urgent call from her daughter, "She's like don't panic mom, mom, Ryan's okay."READ RELATED:?Plane lands on Interstate 8 freeway in El CajonShe turned on the TV and saw her son landing a Piper with his student pilot, a 36-year-old man, on board, "I felt like I was in one of those airplane games, he just came in gliding near all those cars, did you guys see when that kid was like, 'Hey dad watch out for the airplane?' I was like, 'Oh My God!' Father Son Holy Spirit," she said crossing herself, "and I dropped to my knees."Muno had a career in aviation, performing duties from flight attendant to loading the aircraft and working on flight plans. Just watching the video made her tear up, knowing his safe landing was a miracle."We're all blessed. If I had lost Ryan, but he saved so many people," she said wiping away a tear.Muno said Ryan's been an instructor for two years, pursuing his second dream after a concussion during a baseball game changed his trajectory."When he was a little baby he used to lay down in the first class cabin and just go to sleep," she said he found his love of flying from growing up traveling with her. After his emergency landing, she's not too keen on him jumping back into the cockpit.Last night she urged him to hang out with his friends, or his father, "because if I get you, I'm never going to let you go," she said choking back tears. She said Ryan is probably going to go back to work tomorrow. He is also waiting to hear back from United Airlines. She said he applied to be a pilot with them and hopes to find out if he got the job by next month. 1801

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The County of San Diego has spent nearly million to support migrants after the federal government ended the Safe Release Program, according to county officials.Flights carrying between 120 to 135 people are now flying from Texas to San Diego to relieve the processing backlog in the Rio Grande Valley sector in Texas. That sector is 200 percent over capacity, according to acting San Diego Border Patrol Chief Doug Harrison. So far, 10News has confirmed at least two flights have arrived in San Diego. It is not clear how many migrants, if any, will ultimately need county support. This latest round of migrants from Texas are first processed through Border Patrol before Immigration and Customs Enforcement takes over the processing. ICE told Team 10 custody is determined on a "case-by-case basis."Organizations like the San Diego County Rapid Response Network along with the County have stepped in since the end of the Safe Release Program. The program provided asylum seekers resources like transportation until their scheduled immigration court appearance. In a federal lawsuit filed in April, the County blamed the federal government saying "the County has suffered" and the move has "unfairly shifted the... burdens to the County and its residents."RELATED: Border officials say migrants from Texas being transferred to San DiegoProjected county costs for supporting migrant services totaled more than .65 million. That amount was through May 3rd. Here is the breakdown:- ,014,570 for contracted health services through UCSD- 1,676 for Health and Human Services Agency staff salary/benefits- ,392 for County Department of General Services staff support- ,640 for interpreters- ,965 for contracted nurse- ,743 for County Public Safety Group's Office of Emergency Services staff support- ,045 for pharmaceuticals- ,103 for various supplies and equipmentAs of late Monday afternoon, Supervisor Dianne Jacob said the latest amount is actually closer to million. She released this statement to Team 10:“I am deeply concerned that flying in hundreds of migrant families will put an even greater strain on San Diego non-profits, agencies and taxpayers. Immigration is clearly the responsibility of the federal government, but now it’s sticking San Diego County with the bill. Since the opening of an emergency shelter downtown in October, the county has had to spend nearly million to screen and process some 14,000 asylum seekers. Local taxpayers should not be on the hook for this.”It is unclear how long the migrant flights from Texas to San Diego will last. 2624
