CORONADO (KGTV) — New rules go into effect on Thursday, August 16, restricting where people can and can't use e-cigarettes in Coronado.The City Council passed an ordinance on July 17 to make the popular devices subject to the same rules as regular cigarettes, banning their use in many public places.According to the new law, e-cigarettes will no longer be allowed in the following unenclosed areas:1. All public property including, but not limited to, streets, highways, alleys, rights-of-way, parkways, sidewalks, parking lots and pathways; 2. Outdoor public places; 3. Outdoor recreational areas; 4. Outdoor service areas; 5. Outdoor dining areas.An exception has been made for the Municipal Golf Course, where smoking is also allowed.Anyone caught breaking the new rule could be subject to a 0 fine. The city will put up new signs to let people know of the change.Language in the City Council proposition showed that city leaders feared vaping devices and the smoke from them could be dangerous to the public health. They also wanted to eliminate confusion by having different rules for different kinds of smoking.E-cigarette advocates say bans like these are counter-productive.The Consumer Advocates for Smoke-Free Alternatives Association sent a statement to 10News that reads, in part, "Smoking laws that include a ban on vaping send the inaccurate and misleading message that e-cigarettes are just as harmful as smoking. To date, there is no credible scientific evidence to support this claim. Bay Books employees say landlord Kleege Enterprises has found a new tenant for the site and that it has to be out by March."I'm obsessed with this bookstore," said manager Barbara Chambers. "I don't know what I'm going to do."Building owner Bruce Kleege says this is not the case. He said he believes negotiations with the bookstore are ongoing and that he would like to keep the bookstore, albeit smaller. Last year, Kleege's company bought almost the entire block of buildings on Orange Avenue, the bookstore included, for million. Already, two high-end restaurants and a poke restaurant are on the way, replacing previous tenants. Kleege says the bookstore is paying a fraction of market rent, a gap that needs to narrow, but not close.Meanwhile, bookstore owner Angelica Muller says some of the spaces offered are off the main street, half the space, and double the rent to about ,000 a month. Comet NEOWISE may be on its way out, but that doesn't mean that the night sky's light show is set to end.According to the American Meteor Society, two meteor showers are set to peak in the coming days, which could result in several fireballs that light up the sky.One of those showers is the Southern Delta-Aquariids, which, according to NASA, are typically visible between July 12 and Aug. 23. But the agency reports that the system will peak in activity early Monday morning.At its viewing peak — in the southern hemisphere on a clear dark night — the Southern Delta-Aquariids can produce up to 25 meteors an hour, NASA says. Unfortunately, Americans won't be able to see that many fireballs, but experts still say some may still be visible — especially for those with minimal light pollution and clear skies.NASA says the Southern Delta-Aquariids will be most visible between moonset and first dawn on early Monday morning.The American Meteor Society also reports that the Alpha Capricornids will also peak early next week. While the AMS notes that the shower isn't particularly strong (about five meteors an hour), the meteors it does produce are particularly bright and visible.The AMS says the Alpha Capricornids will peak Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.According to the Associated Press, Comet NEOWISE will be visible in the night sky through mid-August before it heads back out toward the outer solar system. 1430

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Firefighters are battling a major fire in Corpus Christi following a pipeline explosion along the city's refinery row.The blast happened just after 8:05 a.m. near Lantana and I-37, possibly at EPIC Products near Lantana and Navigation.Firefighters said the fire ignited a barge, which became fully engulfed. The fire then spread from the pipeline to the grain elevator.KRIS reports that multiple people during the explosion ended up in the water.CHRISTUS Spohn Shoreline representatives said they are treating four people from the explosion. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time. Two victims are being flown to Brooke Army Medical Center burn units in San Antonio.Corpus Christi Mayor Joe McComb said there is a search and rescue operation for four people who are still missing.KRIS has learned that EPIC Products had a brand new pipeline built for loading. It was reportedly going in at the facility when there was a pipeline rupture at the barge loading dock.According to Lieutenant Marina Lyons with the US Coast Guard, a dredge struck a submerged pipeline causing a fire in the Corpus Christi ship channel. The owner of the barge said they had multiple employees working at the site at the time of the explosion.The Corpus Christi Police Department has closed off Lantana Street to traffic as crews work to contain the inferno. 1379
