SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Despite a concerted effort to repair San Diego's crumbling sidewalks, a new report by city staff details the vast number of areas in desperate need of repair, as well as the skyrocketing cost to get them fixed."We're repairing more now than we ever have, but it continues to be a source of frustration," City Council member Mark Kersey told 10News in an interview Wednesday ahead of a City Council meeting on the matter.The new data shows that crews have repaired or replaced more than 27,000 sidewalks since the last major assessment was completed in 2015. However, more than 81,000 sidewalks still need attention. And while an estimate in 2016 put the costs to complete the work at million, that number has now jumped to to 100 million."The way it's set up right now is the sidewalk is the property owner's responsibility," Kersey explained. "They own it and they're supposed to maintain it. But because it's in the public's right of way, if someone trips and falls and hurts themselves, the city is the first one to get sued."Kersey says the repair process is far more complex and time-consuming than simply seeing a problem area and fixing it. Much of this stems from trying to prod property owners into making the repairs. However, Kersey says the costs of getting the right permits can be prohibitive, even sometimes matching the actual cost of the work. There is a city program which offers to bypass permitting and have the city do the work for half of the cost, though only a few dozen repairs are processed through the program each year.Another concern is mounting legal costs. On top of the cost of the actual repairs, the city has spent millions of dollars settling lawsuits stemming from dangerous sidewalks. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Feeling overwhelmed by bills? 10News is exploring solutions for making it in San Diego and found there may be a way around the mountain of debt.A recent study by Lendedu suggests companies are open to allowing consumers to negotiate their bills. Using data provided by the company Truebill, Lendedu analyzed which companies tend to be more generous in negotiating with customers.Satellite service providers were analyzed in the report. Customers of SiriusXM had the highest success rate in negotiations, according to Lendedu. Consumers had negotiation success rates in the 80s with three other companies, Suddenlink, Centurylink, and Dish Network, the report showed.The study went on to note, “When it came to how much companies actually knocked off the average customer’s bill, SiriusXM once again led the way; the average SiriusXM customer was able to decrease that monthly charge by 40 percent or more. Osinski says the way businesses make their money, especially when it comes to services, is through recurring revenue. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For over a decade, SDSU associate professor of chemistry Gregory Holland has been researching spiders and particularly black widow’s silk.They’ve come to the realization, through their research, that the properties of black widow silk are stronger than steel and tougher than the Kevlar in bulletproof vests.Gregory Holland, SDSU associate professor of analytical chemistry and Northwestern chemistry professor Nathan Gianneschi said their collaboration shows the organization of the molecules involved in silk production is more complex than previously thought.There are companies that use synthetic spider silk but its the specific black widow spider silk that has the top tier benefits.“The synthetic spider silk its not a bad material, its just not as good as the real thing," Holland said.Holland says the company that creates synthetic silk actually has partnerships with Adidas and Patagonia. "The most important thing is a spider does it low energy, environmentally friendly. It’s just protein water and salt”.Once they reach the point where they’re able to identically replicate the silk of a black widow spider, the artificial version could be used in building materials for bridges or environmentally friendly replacements for plastic.Black widows (Latrodectus hesperus) spin a lightweight thread much stronger than that of other spider species, with draglines that can stretch an extra 25 percent of their length before snapping.The composition of the spun silk fibers was previously identified, but the structure of the proteins involved in producing them has been more of a mystery, now one step closer. 1650

Its windows are completely covered by brown paper, and the door is shut.But on the other side of those coverings, it's very much business as usual."I have the right to at least fight for my business," said owner Meagan Crowell.Crowell said she could not stomach another closure. She said she only got a ,000 federal Paycheck Protection Program loan, and no other stimulus benefits to help get through."I have two kids," she said. "They are two and four years old and I'm not going to sit back and allow them not to eat."Crowell says she takes the virus very seriously - and that she dipped into her savings to make her salon COVID safe and keep the lights on. But those efforts are still not enough for the governor's new shutdown order, which says salons must close as ICU capacity continues to decrease.And other than two clients rescheduling, Crowell says she's completely booked."I want you to always love the person you see in the mirror, and I think mental health is a huge, huge issue," she said.Meanwhile, the county has served nearly 30 restaurants, bars, gyms and religious organizations with cease and desist orders since the shutdown took effect Monday.
