SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Flooding from a fire service line threatened Wednesday to buckle a portion of a North Park street, blocks from the sites of several significant pipe breaks.The rupture was reported about 4:30 a.m. at the intersection of Polk Avenue and Kansas Street. The road buckled about 12 inches and water spilled onto half the roadway.Within an hour, the water department reached the scene to evaluate the situation. A city spokesperson tells 10News the break was on a fire service line, the pipe connecting a fire hydrant to a water main. They also said no one is without water, and that the break would be repaired the same day. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Driving on roads in San Diego during the holiday season can be a headache, as residents and tourists alike deal with increased traffic caused by extra congestion. This year, during Thanksgiving week, the roads have been a little bit safer, according to statistics released by the California Highway Patrol. San Diego County DUI arrests and auto fatalities were both down from last year, for the time period between Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. and Friday at 6:00 a.m. Going into the weekend there have been a total of 21 DUI arrests recorded in San Diego, a decrease from 27 arrests from 2017. RELATED: Check 10News?traffic updatesThe results are also reflected across the state, where the 294 DUI arrests are down from 386 a year ago. There have been no fatal car accidents in San Diego, compared to one at this time last year. Across the state there were 17 car accidents resulting in death, compared to 19 in 2017. The CHP reports that of the 13 fatalities that occurred in their jurisdiction, five were not wearing seat belts.  1142

In most cases, that stops during the summer, and now more than ever, that's a problem."For all too many San Diego children, summertime brings about hunger," says Vince Hall. Hall is the CEO of Feeding San Diego, and this is where his organization steps in partnering with the state's Pandemic EBT program. This summer, each eligible child receives a one-time payment of 5 for groceries from the State of California. And for a school like Lexington Elementary in El Cajon, this program is a necessity. "98% of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged," says Lesley Ezop. Ezop is the interim principal at Lexington Elementary. It's one of 11 food distribution points that Feeding San Diego partners with to offer children much needed nutrition throughout the summer."Just so that kids can have the basics so that they can learn and can function," adds Ezop. "When kids have what they need, they're going to succeed, right?" But the program doesn't stop there. The children aren't the only ones facing hunger. Feeding San Diego knows if the student needs food assistance, then the entire family needs it. So the organization partners with local schools to provide meals for the whole family. "If we provide food to youth and not to the adults, that food is just going to be divided, and the effect of our initiative is going to be diminished," says Hall. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Drivers in Torrey Highlands saw quite the sight as a hot air balloon landed in front of Westview High School Friday evening.A video circulating online shows traffic continuing to move around the balloon as it made a safe landing on Camino Del Sur.Lawrence and Andrea Sher said they are used to hot air balloons landing near their home on Bryn Glen Way, but said, this time, the hot air balloon was a bit too close for comfort. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Despite the pandemic, Veterans Village of San Diego held its annual Stand Down event that helps hundreds of veterans facing homelessness every year.From a glance, this year’s event may seem different. Not as many people were there and stations were more spaced out than normal. But the mission remained the same, reaching out to veterans who are at risk or homeless.Darcy Pavich, the Stand Down director, says the goal is to provide Veterans with the resources they need. Whether it’s housing services, medical referrals, or employment services."It’s difficult for them right now to connect with the services because so many doors are closed," says Pavich.What is also different this year is making sure COVID-19 health guidelines are followed. From requiring masks, to hand sanitizing, and making sure everyone practiced social distancing.This took a lot more planning and preparation to make sure Veterans and Volunteers stayed safe.But even with the changes, Pavich says the simple gesture of reaching out to Veterans made a big impact on those that showed up. "It brings a smile to them and they may not have a lot to smile about right now," she said. "I can never find a good reason why a Veteran should not be housed, safe, and comfortable in their own life." 1292
