In the weeks leading up to the November 2020 election, data provided by the Postal Service indicated a noticeable drop in on-time mail delivery as millions of Americans used the agency to vote-by-mail. To understand these delays, I sent a letter to the Inspector General of the United States Postal Service to request an investigation into the origins of the delays, and more importantly, what needs to be done to reverse these trends. Unfortunately, during the Holiday season—the Postal Service’s busiest time of the year—the combination of record mail volume and surges in COVID-19 cases have further hampered the agency’s ability to promptly deliver mail. In fact, as UPS and FedEx prioritize the distribution of vaccines, the Postal Service has taken on much of their package volume, adding more stress to an already overwhelmed system. Last week, it was reported that thousands of Postal Service employees were quarantined due to the pandemic, creating employee availability shortages across the country.For the duration of the pandemic, Postal Service employees have reported working each and every day to ensure mail delivery continued as states across the country enacted stay-at-home orders. As COVID-19 vaccines become more widely available, I am fighting to ensure these heroic Americans are classified as essential workers, therefore enabling them to be among the earlier recipients of the vaccine. Last Friday, I spoke with Postmaster General Louis DeJoy regarding the ongoing delays associated with mail delivery and stressed the need to rectify the situation as millions of Americans continue to rely on the Postal Service. Let me be clear—the more than 600,000 Postal Service employees nationwide are among the most dedicated public servants in our government workforce, and I have no doubt that they are doing everything in their power to move the mail as quickly and safely as possible. EL CAJON (KGTV) -- Investigators are gathering clues to determine what caused a deadly single-car crash along a major roadway in El Cajon early Friday morning.The crash was reported at around 2:20 a.m. Friday by witnesses traveling to nearby pharmacy on Fletcher Parkway near Navajo Road. The witnesses, a woman and her young daughter, called 9-1-1 after discovering a wrecked white SUV fully engulfed in flames. According to El Cajon Police, the driver was heading westbound on Fletcher Parkway when they stuck a tree. The SUV immediately caught fire.The woman and other good Samaritans tried to pull the driver out of the burning vehicle.Crews arrived and also tried to rescue the trapped motorist but the victim died in the blaze.No information about the victim has been released at this time.Both directions of Fletcher Parkway near Navajo Road were closed as of 6 a.m. while officials continue their investigation. 928

Each day since November 1, a group called Warriors Journey Home shows up at Veterans Memorial Park in Green, Ohio, offers a brief prayer and then turns their attention to a metal tree that measures less than five feet tall.They quietly hang 22 dog tags on the Witness Tree to represent the 22 veterans who die from suicide each day in the U.S. The final 22 tags will be placed on the tree on Veterans Day."We're going to have 242 dog tags on this tree. Those are 242 lives that didn't have to end this way and we can do something about it," said John Schluep, an Army veteran who runs the local chapter of Warriors Journey Home.Keith Van Buskirk, a veteran of the Marine Corps Reserve, said seeing all of the dog tags is emotional for him."It definitely provokes an emotional response in me. It makes me wish I could shake the hand or hug every one of those war fighters on that tree," Van Buskirk said.Both Schluep and Van Buskirk said they knew veterans who committed suicide."I was called yesterday about a young man who had taken his life, a Marine veteran from Iraq," Schluep said.The non-profit has a mission to provide spiritual healing and soul repair from the invisible wounds for veterans, families and the community.Schluep said there are many reasons for suicides among veterans, including a struggle to find wellness when adjusting from military culture back to civilian life."Loneliness, abandonment, isolation, lack of fitting into that community," Schluep said.Those in the community who support Warriors Journey Home are known as "strong hearts." Their role is considered crucial because they help share some of the burdens that veterans face."Part of that is opening our hearts to listen, to share that responsibility. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Crews battled a half-acre brush fire in El Cajon Monday night. According to California Highway Patrol, the fire sparked around 6:30 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 8 near El Cajon Boulevard. The blaze started near a metal business in the area, but no structures were threatened and no injuries reported. 337
