POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A family in Poway escaped after their home burst into flames in Poway Sunday morning. The fire started at a home on the 17000 block of St. Andrews Drive around 3 a.m. According to firefighters, crews were able to extinguish the flames in most of the attic, but the home was a total loss. A man inside the home at the time of the fire says he and his adult son woke up to the smoke alarms going off. "I never thought that things would happen this quickly in a fire that I was involved with in the house. I though well, I'll have time to get stuff out. It going to be in one part of the house. But this thing was like, you couldn't go in any part of the house after we were aware of it for a minute or two,” said homeowner Greg Heer. Heer said they were able to get their two dogs out of the home, but the flames were too intense to return and rescue several kittens.A board and care home next door had to be evacuated as crews battled the flame. President Donald Trump has taken issue with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s plan to paint “Black Lives Matter” in front of Trump’s namesake Manhattan tower. A de Blasio spokeswoman announced plans for the mural in front of Trump Tower on Wednesday. Trump tweeted about the plan Thursday and said Black Lives Matter protesters have chanted about killing police officers. "Told that @nycmayor Bill de Blasio wants to paint the fabled & beautiful Fifth Avenue, right in front of Trump Tower/Tiffany, with a big yellow Black Lives Matter sign," Trump tweeted. "'Pigs in a Blanket, Fry ‘Em Like Bacon', referring to killing Police, is their chant. President Donald Trump is asking the Supreme Court to allow him to block critics from his personal Twitter account. The administration said in a high-court filing Thursday that Trump’s @realdonaldtrump account with more than 85 million followers is his personal property and blocking people from it is akin to elected officials who refuse to allow their opponents' yard signs on their front lawns. “President Trump’s ability to use the features of his personal Twitter account, including the blocking function, are independent of his presidential office,” acting Solicitor General Jeffrey Wall wrote in urging the justices to review the case.The federal appeals court in New York ruled last year that Trump uses the account to make daily pronouncements and observations that are overwhelmingly official in nature. PORTLAND, Ore. — The mayors of six U.S. cities are appealing to Congress to make it illegal for the U.S. government to deploy militarized agents to cities that don’t want them. The mayors of Portland, Oregon; Seattle; Chicago; Kansas City; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Washington wrote to leaders of the U.S. House and Senate pushing for limits on agent deployments. The move came Monday as a top official said federal militarized officers would remain in Portland until attacks on the U.S. courthouse cease. Early Monday, U.S. agents repeatedly fired what appeared to be tear gas, flash bangs and pepper balls at protesters.Federal agents have been patrolling Portland over a little over a week. They were sent to the city by the Department of Homeland Security as part of President Donald Trump's crackdown on the defacement of federal property, statues and monuments.Protests have taken place nightly in Portland for 60 straight days, since the death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis. While the vast majority of those demonstrating have been peaceful, a federal courthouse has been defaced with graffiti, some protesters have thrown fireworks and other projectiles toward officers and others have attempted to breach fencing surrounding the courthouse.Federal agents have responded by using tear gas, pepper balls and the use of batons to disperse protesters on several occasions. They've also grabbed protesters off the streets and detained them in unmarked cars.Protests have escalated in intensity since federal agents have arrived in the city, which has forced Oregon Gov. Politifact combed through hundreds of lies in 2018 and revealed its "Lie of the Year." This year, the political fact-checking website, picked the online smear campaign against the Parkland students after the deadly school shooting in Florida.Gina Montalto, 14, was one of the students killed during the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. For her family, this will be the first Christmas without her.“It is by far the toughest,” says her father, Tony Montalto. “Gina loved the holiday season. She loved decorating for Christmas.”Seventeen families lost loved ones in the shooting. But not even a tragedy involving children stopped online trolls from starting conspiracy theories that falsely accused students of being “crisis actors.” Others claimed the teens had secretly organized before the shooting.“We are not actors,” says Montalto. “We are not politically driven. We’re parents and spouses that lost our loved ones.”The amount of lies leveled at the Parkland students and their families were enough for Politifact to name the smears as its lie of the year.“We felt the smears against the Parkland students were so egregious against young people who had done nothing to bring this on that it did bring it to another level,” said Angie Holan, a Politifact editor.Holan said the smear campaign is a troubling sign of where the country is in these polarizing times.“If people want to come forward and debate political issues because of something that happened to them in their everyday lives and then they would get smeared – it just seems like something new and disturbing,” said Holan.After the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Montalto became the president of Stand with Parkland, a national organization that pushes for laws that address violence in schools.
