TAMPA BAY, Fla. — Thanksgiving is a day of gratitude for many, but it also marks 10 years of Justin Gaertner's Alive Day.Gaertner's Alive Day marks the day he survived injuries overseas."It's a day to remember how far you've come in life and that nothing can hold you back," said Gaertner. November 26, 2010, Gaertner and his best friend, Gabriel Martinez, were on a clearance mission in Marjah in Afghanistan's southwestern Helmand province. While sweeping after a vehicle in front of them, the vehicle rolled over an IED, Gaertner said Martinez hit a secondary IED and as he swept to secure a landing zone for a medical helicopter, he triggered a tertiary IED. Both lost their legs."I remember every second of that moment. The smell. The looks. The sound. Everything that was going on, and it's something I'll never forget. But regardless, he was right there by my side the whole time, throughout the whole thing," Gaertner said.A photo shows the two with injured hands, holding each other's pinky fingers. They had each other's backs in the Marines through their recovery. Now, both work as computer forensic analysts for ICE Homeland Security Investigations, Martinez for HSI Denver, and Gaertner for HSI Tampa."We never let each other go because going through something like that by yourself is hard enough and then having him by my side that whole time, I guess there's really no feeling or words that can describe having your best friend, your brother right there next to you throughout the entire journey," Gaertner said.They were brought on through the Human Exploitation Rescue Operative (HERO) program."The child exploitation cases are really close to my heart, close to everybody's heart, and it's just nice when you come home and know you made a difference today," he said.Gaertner said he's now worked on close to 300 federal and state cases, dealing with things like child exploitation, drug smuggling, and national security. He also helped in the aftermath of the shooting attack at Naval Air Station Pensacola.He said the past ten years have been a journey."Highs lows, accomplishments of conquering challenges, starting my family, marrying the love of my life, having a beautiful daughter together. It's just been a journey and something I don't take for granted because I shouldn't be here, but I am, and I'm trying to make the best of it," he said.He said his wife and daughter are his rocks. "With the challenges of 2020, the challenges over the last 10 years of my life, my daughter has been a blessing. We lost a daughter in 2018 and have been praying every day since then for the arrival of our daughter Callie now and on top of her I've prayed for a wife such as mine, and I couldn't have made it over the past few years without her," Gaertner said.His wife, Paige, said while Thanksgiving before was a day to acknowledge blessings, now it's also gratitude, celebrating Justin's life."I think Justin's greatest ability in life is to adapt and overcome, and to me and having a daughter now and him being a father, I think it's just an example to all of us that no matter what we go through, I mean losing his legs has been a huge trial in his life, but he has done it and overcame it like it was a blessing to him," she said. TAMPA — A Tampa mom is pleading for help to bring her son home after she says his father moved him Lebanon without her permission.3-year-old Dexter was supposed to spend a court-ordered weekend with his father. Instead, Rachelle Smith says Dexter’s father Ali Salamey, a US citizen, went to the embassy, attained passports for himself and Dexter, and then flew them both to Beirut. “I will never stop looking for you, I promise,” Smith said.Smith says she suspected her son Dexter would be moved to Lebanon by his father and appealed to the court. But Ali Salamey was still able to obtain passports through the Lebanese embassy."I stated that I fear that Mr. Salamey will remove and hide our child. This fear was clearly valid," Smith said. "I am here to beg for any and all help to get my little boy returned." Lebanon does not partake in US extradition laws. It also did not sign the Hague Convention Agreement, an international treaty protecting against cases like these. So as it stands, she has no power to bring him back.Without assistance from the state department and president, she believes she may never see her son again. She is asking Florida Sens. Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio to help her in bringing Dexter home."I would never have thought he would have taken any attempts to separate the child from his mother," Alex Stavrou, the attorney for Ali Salamey, said. "Ali, quite frankly, lived for his son."“Most parents, when this happens to them, they are absolutely paralyzed," iStand Parent Network president Dr. Noelle Hunter said. Hunter knows this all too well. In 2011 her daughter Mia was taken to Mali by Mia’s dad. But Hunter got her back.“I staged a protest in front of the Mali embassy in Washington DC.”Like Smith, she appealed to the court. She says if you suspect this will happen, listen to your gut, get a court order, warn officials, contact the airlines, and register your child with the Children’s Passport Issuance Alert Program. She says to also contact the embassy you think the parent will go to.“Enroll their child in something called the prevent abduction program,” Hunter said.“That embassy has no obligation, unfortunately, to honor an American parent’s wishes that a passport not be issued.”Like Lebanon, Mali has no extradition policy but Hunter got her senators and the state department involved and Mia came home.“Mali started to pay attention when governmental actors started to indicate that this American child needed to come home and that there would be progressive actions until that happened.” 2574

Steve Wynn is now free to sell his stake in the massive casino business he founded.Wynn Resorts said in a filing on Thursday that Wynn, its former chief executive, and his ex-wife Elaine Wynn, have dissolved an agreement that prevented them from selling their shares.Wynn stepped down as CEO last month after allegations of sexual misconduct piled pressure on the billionaire casino mogul and sent the company's stock tumbling.The company, which operates casinos in Las Vegas and Macau, said in its filing that Steve Wynn may now "seek to sell all or a portion" of the roughly 12 million shares that he owns. Elaine Wynn owns another 10 million shares, giving them a combined 21% stake.Wynn, 76, has denied the accusations of misconduct, which gained widespread attention in late January after an investigative report by The Wall Street Journal detailed numerous allegations against him, citing dozens of sources.Shares in the company were trading above 0 in January, but dropped sharply after the allegations were made public. TAMPA, Fla. -- Business is booming at the Florida Gun Show at the Florida State Fairgrounds. But as doors open there is a buzz in the air over the possibility of stricter gun laws.In response to the Parkland school shooting, Florida Gov. Rick Scott says no to bump stocks, no guns for the mentally ill and yes to raising the age you can buy legally buy one.You won’t find an AR-15 ban or extended background checks in Scott's plan. But in a break from the National Rifle Association, of which Scott is a member, he does not want to arm teachers.At the gun show, Scripps station WFTS in Tampa found a split in support from his own constituents.“Change needs to happen and I don’t see why not try something," said Jason Walker said, long-time gun owner and an Air Force member.When it comes to Scott's plan, Walker said he supports it overall.Eric Oyola on the other hand said he does not. He is the owner of Class 3 Outbreak, a gun manufacturer."I think the laws that we have in place right now are good enough to prevent any crime," said Oyola. “They’re just taking the rights from the law abiding citizens for people that are going to do it anyways.”Oyola is talking about the bump stock ban. As an AR-15 dealer, he especially rebuffs any plans that would target these types of guns. No worries for him under Scott’s proposal. The governor also rejects banning them.Scott does, however, want to raise the age you can buy from 18 to 21-years-old.“If you can fight for your country, come home and not be able to have an AR-15 or even buy a rifle, I think it’s not fair," Oyola said.“I don’t believe you should be able to buy a long gun at age 18," said Walker.Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) said believes without an AR-15 ban the proposal does not have any teeth.“It’s a step in the right direction, but it doesn’t get at the core problem of how you are going to stop a person with an assault weapon of walking into a crowded place," Sen. Nelson said.What about Scott’s plan to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill?“It’s going to be a hard thing to do because people at any time can flip out whether they are under the radar or not," said Walker.Neither Walker nor Oyola are convinced it will work. What about the so-called gun show loophole where private sellers aren’t required to conduct a background check?“Absolutely, everybody should have a background check," said Walker.“I’m a licensed dealer," said Oyola, "If you can’t pass a gun background check, you shouldn’t have a gun.”A consensus? Still, background checks aren’t in Scott’s plan either. The governor is also calling for a 0 million plan to increase school security. It includes placing police officers in every school in the state.
