SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A plan to improve bike access along Harbor Drive may put pedestrians at risk.As SANDAG works to promote alternative transportation through its "Keep San Diego Moving" initiative, they plan to upgrade the Bayshore Bikeway. That includes a stretch through Barrio Logan that runs along Harbor Drive from 32nd Street to Park Boulevard.Renderings from SANDAG show a two-way bike lane protected from traffic by concrete or plants. But, plans to build the bike lanes also call for the removal of two pedestrian bridges that go over the intersection of Harbor Drive and 32nd Street. SANDAG will replace the bridges with crosswalks.Navy personnel use the bridges as they go to and from Naval Base San Diego every day. Some people who use the bridge daily say they're worried that it will lead to more accidents and dangerous conditions while trying to cross. Others say it could lead to more people jaywalking along Harbor Drive.SANDAG told 10News that safety is their top concern, and the new crosswalks will "enhance the entire intersection, including adding pedestrian pushbuttons, striped crosswalks, median landings, and other safety features."SANDAG also says they're working with the Navy and other city organizations to make sure the crosswalks are as safe as the bridges. A spokesperson for the Navy was unable to provide a comment about the project.Right now, the project is in the environmental review phase. Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2020 and wrap up by the end of 2021. 1523

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A pillar in San Diego's art community says it's being forced out of the neighborhood by high rent.La Bodega Gallery and Studios announced Tuesday it's closing its doors after six years following failed lease negotiations. The Logan Avenue gallery has leased the space at the historic Bank of Italy building since 2013 and is one of the founders of the Barrio Arts District. The gallery must now vacate the property by January 2020, gallery owners Chris Zertuche and Soni Lopez-Chavez say.RELATED:For rent: San Diego backyard shed listed for ,050 per monthCalls to change San Diego’s zoning regulationsZertuche and Lopez-Chavez say gentrification is to blame for the closing."It is unfortunate that a community art space that has created so much value for property owners in Barrio Logan can no longer afford to do business here," a release by the gallery said. "[Chris and Soni] have poured their lives into their business and the community they love and are saddened that the ugly face of gentrification pushed them out."The gallery has hosted more than 300 events in the community, the gallery says, and hosted several fundraisers for community organizations. The gallery has also won a variety of local accolades from San Diego magazines."[Chris and Soni] are not the first art space and small business to be gentrified out of Barrio Logan. They are just next," the release added. 1411

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A principal in La Jolla apologized after sending an email to parents she says unintentionally reinforced stereotypes.La Jolla Elementary School Principal Donna Tripi last month sent an email after two parents expressed concern over a man they believed was following a parent and her two children out of a Starbucks and across the street. In the email, Tripi described the man as “an African American male, about 30 years old, about 6’1” tall, wearing a hooded sweatshirt.” Tripi added in an apology email that she was passing along the description she was given.RELATED: La Jolla students, teachers gather to battle bullying on campus“My email was a mistake. While it is critical to keep our school family safe, the way I communicated didn't provide enough specifics to identify the individual, but could easily lead to unnecessary and harmful reactions against other members of our community.”As a result of the incident, the school is hosting a “conversation” on Monday, October 22 at 6 p.m. where parents can gather and ask questions.RELATED: La Jolla High School football is trying to put emphasis on the multi-sport athleteRead the full email below: 1191
