Animals have been used as therapy for years, because research has linked them to a decrease in anxiety and depression in pet parents.It is sometimes referred to as the "Pet Effect" by experts and described this way by Mental Health America:"The Pet Effect, also known as the human-animal bond, is the mutually beneficial relationship between people and animals that positively impacts the health and well-being of both. Any pet owner will tell you that living with a pet comes with benefits, including constant companionship, love and affection."A 2016 survey by the Human Animal Bond Research Institute found that nearly 75% of the animal owners they talked with reported mental health improvements from their furry family member.With a global pandemic keeping many of us isolated, is now the time to adopt a pet?"I adopted Sake from the Arizona Humane Society on July 1," said Scottsdale dog owner Randi Chan.Chan said she immediately brought a dog trainer into the mix and created a structured routine, something she did not have just a few months ago."Before I had her, I was probably working like 12 hours every day," Chan said. "Because... I'll take a break for dinner and then I'll be like, 'Well I have nothing better to do. I've already watched everything on Netflix, so I'll guess I'll start working again.'"She knew that likely was not very positive for her mental health.Now, Chan gets fluffy hugs and a reason to get outside safely for their walks."If anything, the pandemic has just raised awareness to the importance of both adoption and fostering," said Arizona Humane Society's Bretta Nelson.They have moved to appointment-only for their adoptions. Once a prospective pet parent sets up their time slot, a representative from the shelter will call them ahead of time to go over what animals they may be interested in."We think with this one-on-one match-making process, you can talk to people about a pet's medical or their behavioral, and they weren't already attached before learning that information," Nelson explained. "So, they were able to make a logical decision."That has helped their return rate for pets drastically decrease, while the number of families fostering has sky-rocketed.However, most people will have to return to work at some point and the pets will have to be left behind.Nelson said that a structured routine that is created the first time they come home will make that transition easier."Set a routine that's going to work, even when you're back at work," Nelson said. An astrological mystery event that lit up the daytime sky Wednesday over parts of the upper and midwest and southern Canada may have been solved.Scientists say the fireball was likely a rock that had escaped an asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter a million or more years ago. They think the chunk of rock has been swirling near earth for awhile.“It’s probably been crossing the Earth’s path countless times, until its time was up in 2020,” Robert Lunsford, fireball report coordinator for the American Meteor Society, told Syracuse.com. “The chance of a collision is infinitesimal, but if you do it several million times, it finally happens.”Apparently the time to finally happen was around noon on Wednesday, December 2. Thousands of people reported seeing a bright streak of light lasting a few seconds, and thousands more heard the deafening boom.Reports came in from several states, including Ohio, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania,Virginia, as well as parts of Toronto, Ontario and southeast Canada, according to the American Meteor Society.It’s not unusual for meteors to enter Earth’s atmosphere or make it to the ground, however this one was rare because it happened in a very populated area.NASA’s analysis of the event shows the meteoroid entered Earth’s atmosphere over upper New York, roughly between Rochester and Syracuse traveling roughly 56,000 mph. Which is slow by meteor standards.It then broke into pieces roughly 22 miles in the air, which produced the bright flash of light and loud sonic boom.NASA estimates the meteor was roughly three feet across and weighed about 1,800 pounds when it entered the atmosphere.NASA reportedly has three meteor-tracking cameras in Ohio and western Pennsylvania that could have precisely tracked this event, but they were off at the time because of the time of day.“Meteor cameras don’t turn on until night because they’re too sensitive to the sun,” explained Bill Cooke, who tracks meteors for NASA. 1966

An unauthorized vehicle drove onto Travis Air Force Base in Northern California, crashed and erupted into flames, killing the driver, authorities said.There were no other fatalities in the security breach Wednesday night, the base said in a statement. It did not identify the driver, but said the car "gained unauthorized access" through the main gate."Travis AFB security forces immediately responded," the statement said. "Additionally, the base's explosive ordnance disposal team, office of special investigations and other responders were on scene."It's unclear whether the crash was deliberate. The Air Force and the FBI are investigating."The investigation is ongoing and there are no current known threats to the base or community," the base said. " The main gate has reopened and all other facilities are operating as normal."Travis Air Force Base is home to 10,000 military personnel, and a major hub for logistics and military cargo in the Pacific. It's the largest military aerial port in the US, and includes facilities for airlift and aerial refueling.The base is located in Solano County and is midway between Sacramento and San Francisco."The safety and welfare of our airmen, their families and our local community is our top priority," said Col.
