CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Protests are planned over the demotion of a popular South Bay principal.Mary Rose Peralta had been principal of Chula Vista High School since 2013. Viktoria Camacho was one of her former students.“She was a great leader. She was one to walk down the hallways with a smile on her face,” Camacho said.“My freshman year of high school was 2013 and that was actually Ms. Peralta’s first year as principal. We always kind of had that ‘we started high school together’ journey,” Camacho said.Peralta was removed from her position at the end of the school year. She is now the principal at Chula Vista Middle School. Supporters, as well as a petition online, said her demotion had to do with giving her students a “creative step for graduation to give class of 2020 a warm goodbye.”ABC 10News covered the event, where the names of all 642 graduating seniors were painted on the field.A district spokesperson would not confirm that graduation had anything to do with Peralta’s demotion.“Ms. Peralta began the school year as the principal at Chula Vista Middle School. Any information behind the reason for that is a personnel matter, and as you know we can’t share specifics about that,” spokesperson Manny Rubio wrote to Team 10.Her removal came just days after Dr. Moises Aguirre became acting superintendent of the Sweetwater Union High School District. He replaced Dr. Karen Janney after she was placed on paid administrative leave amid an investigation into the district’s multi-million dollar budget shortfall.“Especially in the middle of a pandemic, when students need consistency, this shift really had an impact on the community,” Camacho said.Camacho wrote an email to Dr. Aguirre in early July about Peralta’s demotion. He did not address the situation, writing instead that he had “every confidence that Mr. Alcala will serve the Chula Vista High School community in the same open and welcoming manner he did at Chula Vista Middle.”Camacho said her criticism of the district’s decision has nothing to do with the new principal, but emphasized Ms. Peralta should have never been removed in the first place.“If you ask anyone, she was a star. She was probably one of the best things to happen at Chula Vista High School,” added Aaron Barrera, another former student.Barrera and Camacho are the driving forces behind the petition online, demanding Peralta get her job back. As of Tuesday afternoon, it had more than 7,800 signatures.“It's quite the injustice, it's quite unfair, and it's plain out wrong,” said Barrera.Peralta has not spoken publicly about her demotion.On Monday August 10th, an in-car protest will take place at the district office with her supporters, including educators, families, and leaders of the local Filipino community. (KGTV) — New businesses are set to call the Otay Ranch Town Center home in the coming months. Just a few months ago, the mall had more than a dozen empty storefronts and employees at the mall called it a ghost town. The new businesses moving in include Novo Brazil Brewing, Planet Fitness, and Barons Market.LONGFORM: Vacant storefronts reflect mall struggles at Otay Ranch Town CenterBrookfield Property Partners took over full ownership of the mall six weeks ago. It was a part of a larger merger across the country. The mall's general manager, Steven Sayers, sat down with 10News."Nothing was going wrong with the property at all. It was just, some of it was just timing with expiring leases and unfortunately, some tenants just left," says Sayers.Sayers says these new businesses were already in the works before the merger. CHULA VISTA, Calif (KGTV) -- Students in the south bay could get free lunches this June. The Sweetwater Union High School District announced Monday that its popular meal program is making a comeback. Called the “Seamless Summer Feeding Program,” free meals are being offered for most of June. According to the district, the free meals are available to anyone 18 and younger. The program runs from June 10 through June 28 Monday through Friday from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. The free lunches are being offered at Montgomery High School and Sweetwater Union High. According to the district, no registration is needed. “Just come and enjoy some great food,” a flyer from the district reads. Childhood obesity is a big issue in our country. The latest numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show 1 in 5 school-aged children in America is considered obese.The Kohler family works hard to raise their children healthy. But one medical professional says it’s also the government’s responsibility to help.Dr. Scott Kahan, who sits on the board of directors for the Obesity Action Coalition, says it's not just the Kohler’s responsibility to keep their children healthy, it’s also on local and state governments to make a difference.   "For example, local policies that increase the opportunity, that increase physical activity during the school day have come into place, and that's a good area for governments to work on," Dr. Kahan says.   The Kohler family agrees.   According to the CDC, only 29 percent of high school students attended physical education classes in 2015.   Family and consumer science classes, once known as home economics, are dwindling in schools, mainly due to problems finding qualified teachers.  "Parents can take it on themselves to learn more about the eating and activity and come up with creative ways to help their kids be a little bit healthier," Dr. Kahan says.   When it comes to school lunches, 50 percent of kids’ daily caloric intake come from them, and 31 million kids eat them every day, according to Kaiser Permanente. That's why there are guidelines in place to keep them healthy.   The Kohler family feels lucky to be able to make their children healthy lunches.   "We know what's going into their lunch box and what they are going to eat every day,” the Kohler parents say.   Dr. Kahan says we need to stop pointing the finger and realize parents, schools, state and local governments all play a role in a child’s life.   "We help everyone to pull together, so that we can all lead healthier and happier lives," Dr. Kahan says. 2005

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A South Bay family spoke about the frightening moments that took place when a police chase ended in front their home and then turned into a shootout on their driveway Monday afternoon.Mark Yturralde said his son-in-law had the quick thinking and presence of mind to shut the door to prevent a suspect, later identified as David Angulo, from getting into their home on Rutgers Avenue.“I didn’t have time to be kind or nice. I had to shove my wife and granddaughter into a closet, and I told them to stay low, keep quiet, don’t come out until I tell you. I tried to watch from a corner,” said Yturralde.RELATED: Carjacking, pursuit leads to deadly officer-involved shooting in Chula VistaAccording to Chula Vista police, Angulo was a known gang member wanted in connection with at least three shootings in June. Police said Angulo carjacked a pickup truck in an area near Main Street, refused to pull over for officers, and led a pursuit into east Chula Vista.Police said Angulo lost control of the truck and crashed into a car driven by an active-duty military member. While the other driver was seriously injured, Angulo got out of the truck and ran to a family’s driveway.Angulo, according to police, opened fire at officers -- the exchange of gunfire that Yturralde said went on for several minutes. Shots struck and flattened the tires of vehicles parked in the driveway, but none of the bullets penetrated the house.Yturralde and Chula Vista police credited Yturralde’s son-in-law for keeping the incident from turning into a hostage situation, or worse.Angulo was killed during the shootout, and police said an investigation will determine how many shots were fired and who opened fire first. Police will also review officers’ body camera footage.Police promised the investigation findings will be released in a timely manner.The three officers involved in the incident were not injured.Family members said they found five shell casings in their backyard. They told ABC 10News they are grateful to police but also offered their condolences to Angulo’s family, even though he put their family in danger. 2145
