Peace is a common desire of all human beings," said Nanjing citizen Yu Hong , who attended the ceremony.Besides the memorial ceremony, Buddhist monks from China and Japan held a religious service Monday at the Memorial Hall of the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre.The assembly was attended by 15 monks from six Buddhist temples in Japan, more than 50 monks and Buddhist believers from China and thirty Massacre survivors and relatives of victims.The monks chanted Buddhist prayers of mourning and prayed for peace.Aori Take Shuna, abbot of Japan's Reiunti Temple, read a poem he wrote to honor the dead and prayed for long-term friendship between the peoples of China and Japan.Yamauchi Sayoko, who was a representative of a sect of Japanese Buddhism, said that the people of Japan, which invaded and occupied China in the 1930s and 1940s, were deeply regretful for the victims of the war and sincerely hoped such a tragedy would never be repeated.Built in 1985, the memorial hall annually records five million visitors since it was expanded and renovated in 2007.Zhu Chengshan, curator of the hall, said that every year when the anniversary of the Nanjing Massacre occurs , nearly 10,000 Nanjing citizens would swarm the hall and spontaneously mourn the victims.On Sunday, workers began to extend a memorial wall at the memorial hall on which names of those killed are engraved.After the extension, the wall would have 10,324 names, 1,724 more than three years ago, Zhu said.Collecting the names of the victims was an important job in researching the Massacre, but it was difficult to find witnesses and documents decades later, he said.Moreover, a group of historians from China, Japan and the United States has begun compiling an encyclopedia on the Nanjing Massacre, which was expected to embody a wide range of historical documents and pictures. BEIJING, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's express delivery topped 10 million pieces per day as of the end of 2010, ranking the third most deliveries in the world, the State Post Bureau (SPB) said on Tuesday.Some 2.4 billion pieces were handled in 2010, an increase of 1.5 times from five years ago. Also, revenues jumped two fold from the level in 2005 to 57.3 billion yuan (8.68 billion U.S. dollars) last year.Despite the increase, China's per capita figure was less than two pieces per day, less than the international average of 4.1 pieces.SPB vowed to improve the policy environment to facilitate industry innovations and build competitive enterprises in the global market.

BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese ministries and local governments have coordinated efforts to combat price hikes by increasing grain supplies, clamping down on speculation and offering subsidies, as the central government has growing concerns about rising inflation.In a move to head off price hikes, the State Administration of Grain will increase sales of grain supplies to meet the public's needs and stabilize market prices, the agency said in a statement posted on its website Friday.Additionally, it will sell a set amount of cooking vegetable oil and soybeans from government reserves beginning next week, in addition to the weekly sales of wheat, rice and corn that has already begun, the statement said.The authority will also send groups of staff to major grain production regions to inspect and guide purchases of autumn grain and regulate business practices, it added.The statement said the move was designed to protect farmers' interests and maintain moderate prices in the grain market.Further, the Ministry of Agriculture announced Friday that it will work to add 8 million mu (0.53 million hectares) of planting areas for vegetables and 2 million mu for potatoes to stabilize agricultural production and increase vegetable supplies during the winter.Also, Zhou Bohua, head of the State Administration of Industry and Commerce, said the administration will "seriously" work to prevent the hoarding of agricultural products, forcing up prices and other speculative practices.These measures echoed the central government's call to tame price rises.China's State Council, or the Cabinet, on Wednesday announced price control guidelines to reassure consumers facing rising inflation.The efforts mainly included imposing temporary price controls on important daily necessities and production materials when necessary, and urging local authorities to offer temporary subsidies to needy families.In addition, the government will work to ensure market supplies and strengthen market supervision.Local governments also unveiled specific measures intended to help people pressured by the higher cost of living. BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China's economic planner and price regulator, said Friday it has asked local governments to crack down on some gas stations selling diesel above the state-set prices.NDRC investigators found some gas stations have been selling diesel above state-set prices in the provinces of Sichuan, Hubei, Henan, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Liaoning, Jiangxi and Shanxi and Chongqing Municipality.The NDRC has requested local governments to punish the offending gas stations.The stations were ordered to stop overcharging and turn over illegal incomes to authorities, according to a statement on the NDRC web-site.Also, the stations would receive punitive fines, it said.Among the violators, Yueyuan gas station in Xichang, Sichuan Province, sold No. 0 diesel for 9 yuan (1.35 U.S. dollars) per liter, as against the state-set 6.55 yuan.The NDRC said that consumers can call 12358 to complain about diesel overpricing and the price regulators will respond quickly.The latest measures were adopted in the wake of those publicized Tuesday, which were aimed to stop some refiners and diesel wholesalers from overcharging.An unprecedented diesel shortage has hit China's cities and markets, leading some wholesalers and gas stations to sell diesel above the state-set prices.Due to the diesel shortage, some enterprises suspended production and express deliveries turned into "snail deliveries."People found that it took much longer for buses to arrive and even some crematories found it hard to get enough diesel for cremations."We can't find enough diesel. Ten of the trucks in our company can't go out to deliver cargo. Our businesses are affected," said Du Zhanhai, head of a freight transportation company in Tangshan, north China's Hebei Province.The deadline for China's planned reduction in energy consumption is approaching. The country announced that it would reduce energy consumption by 20 percent per GDP unit during the 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-2010).
