SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rancho Bernardo High School briefly went on “secure campus” Monday morning after receiving an anonymous threat.According to the school, employees received an email threatening violence against the campus around 9:30 a.m. Monday. The threats weren’t specific to Rancho Bernardo High School, according to a letter sent to parents.Employees notified police, who had officers on campus within a few minutes. The email prompted the school to go on “secure campus” for about 30 minutes, meaning students remained in their classrooms.RELATED: Threatening message found at Monte Vista High School, prompting heightened securityPolice later determined that the campus was safe, but maintained a presence at the school throughout the day.It wasn’t immediately clear if any arrests have been made. 819

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police Friday arrested a fugitive sex offender from New York who was reportedly spotted in the area this week.Dale Dulac, 57, was arrested just after 1:40 p.m. Friday in the 1500 block of Imperial Ave. peacefully. Dulac was reported in the area after fleeing New York and violating his parole.He was charged with felony vehicle theft and receiving stolen property by San Diego Police. According to the United States Marshals Service, Dulac was also being held on a fugitive warrant for violating his parole when he left Niagara Falls, New York, on Sept. 20. 596

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ross Rock, or as locals prefer "The Rock," has had its share of headgear.The lone rock just off the coast from Sunset Cliffs Boulevard has been the target of vandals in the past and has again been crowned, this time by a mermaid.It's not clear how the mermaid was installed on top of the rock. Placing objects on the Ross Rock has almost become a ritual.In 2006, a large pterodactyl had sat atop the rock before being washed away. A peace sign, the numbers "2010" — local graduates, perhaps? — a Christmas tree, a tiki head, and at one point, a toilet with a Raiders fan wedged inside have all been found taking refuge from the waves below.It remains unclear who makes the objects or how they have installed them in the past.Time and again, however, Mother Nature or possibly another vandal has removed what's been placed. 1359

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Metropolitan Transit System officials say ridership spiked in the first quarter of the 2020 fiscal year by more than a million trips compared to the same time last year.From July through September of 2019, 22,258,345 trips were taken on an MTS trolley or bus. In 2018, MTS saw 21,313,801 trips. It's a 4.4% rise from one year to the next."It's encouraging," says MTS Chair Nathan Fletcher.MTS officials say a heavy focus on investment over the past few years is starting to pay off. They recently completed a million plan to streamline services and add frequency to many bus routes. They also added the South Bay Rapid route from Otay Mesa to Downtown and expanded the Rapid Superloop service in the University City area."As we add those services where folks want them, as we squeeze every dime we can get out of our existing budget, as we make a full commitment to engage the community in what they want, people will use it," says Fletcher.The surge in riders helps MTS buck a nationwide trend where public transportation is on the decline.Even in San Diego, year-to-year numbers had been dropping for four straight years, since hitting a record high in 2015 (see chart above).Fletcher says it's a positive step as the city tries to meet strict climate goals that require a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.Recently, SANDAG put out a plan to increase transit ridership to 10%. That sparked a debate over how much money should go towards transit vs. road construction.Fletcher says any money spent on transit also benefits drivers."Every person who chooses transit is one less car driving," he says. "The individual who says, 'I'm always gonna drive,' should support transit because that means less congestion. Less congestion means less toxic pollution and less greenhouse gas emissions. So it's a win for everybody whether you use transit or drive your car."To raise money for more expansion, MTS is looking into a ballot measure for the November 2020 election that would add a half-cent sales tax. 2046

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego is home to the nation’s largest concentration of military personnel. It also has a staggering number of veterans who don’t have a place to liveAnd, even more alarming is the number every year who take their own lives.As ABC 10News Anchor, Kimberly Hunt explains…a non-profit in San Diego lead by, and staffed by, veterans is looking to change that.There are an estimated 1,100 homeless vets on the streets of San Diego. Statistically they commit suicide at a rate of 1.5 times higher than the general population.Kyle Drake is president of Cammies and Canines Sanctuary… a veteran owned, faith bases non-profit helping veterans by providing, among other things transitional housing, structure, and therapy.On this sprawling ranch in Dulzura, they’re given an opportunity.But Cammies and Canines Sanctuary under the importance of companionship. It pairs each veteran with a rescue dog which has been schooled by their master trainers as a service animal.Kyle’s construction company builds tiny homes on the property for each vet to have a sense of place. Tony’s pest control company, Mosquito Joes trains interested veterans to work in the pest control industry, and everyone is given a sense of responsibility and respect.
